  • In non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), the degraded performance of the weaker channel gain user is a problem. In this paper, we propose the asymmetric binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM), to improve the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the weaker channel user in NOMA with the tolerable BER loss of the stronger channel user. First, we design the asymmetric 2PAM, calculate the total allocated power, and derive the closed-form expression for the BER of the proposed scheme. Then it is shown that the BER of the weaker channel user improves, with the small BER loss of the stronger channel user. The superiority of the proposed scheme is also validated by demonstating that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of the weaker channel user is about 10 dB, with the SNR loss of 3 dB of the stronger channel user. In result, the asymmetric 2PAM could be considered in NOMA of 5G systems. As a direction of the future research, it would be meaningful to analyze the achievable data rate for the propsed scheme.

  • The total hip replacement (THR) has been used as the most effective way to restore the function of damaged hip joint. However, various factors have caused some side effects after the THR. Unfortunately, the success of the THR have been decided only by the proficiency of surgeons so far. Hence, It is necessary to find the way to minimize the side effect caused by those factors. The purpose of this study was to suggest the definite data, which can be used to design and choose the optimal hip implant. Using finite element analysis (FEA), the biomechanical condition of bone cement was evaluated. Stress patterns were analyzed in three conditions: cement mantle, procimal femur and stem-cement contact surface. Additionally, micro-motion was analyzed in the stem-cement contact surface. The 3-D femur model was reconstructed from 2-D computerized tomography (CT) images. Raw CT images were preprocessed by image processing technique (i.e. edge detection). In this study, automated edge detection system was created by MATLAB coding for effective and rapid image processing. The 3-D femur model was reconstructed based on anatomical parameters. The stem shape was designed using that parameters. The analysis of the finite element models was performed with the variation of parameters. The biomechanical influence of each parameter was analyzed and derived optimal parameters. Moreover, the results of FE A using commercial stem model (Zimmer's V erSys) were similar to the results of stem model that was used in this study. Through the study, the improved designs and optimal factors for clinical application were suggested. We expect that the results can suggest solutions to minimize various side effects.

  • Due to the increase in the data traffic for the aeronautical communications, LDACS has been proposed to support the data link in the continental domain. LDACS is defined in two standards of LDACS type-1 and LDACS type-2, which are going to be selected through the intensive comparison. In this paper, we analyzed two types of standards and evaluated their performance for various channel models. Simulation results show that both LDACS type-1 and LDACS type-2 have a good performance in the en-route channel model, while they have a poor performance in the airport channel model. In the comparison results for LDACS type-1 and LDACS type-2, LDACS type-1 shows the better performance of 1dB than LDACS type-2 owing to the stronger channel coding technique.

  • In this paper, we propose a rate control scheme, using histogram based rate-distortion (R-D) estimation, which produces a consistent picture quality between consecutive frames. The histogram based R-D estimation used in our rate control scheme offers a closed-form mathematical model that enable us to predict the bits and the distortion generated from an encoded frame at a given quantization parameter (QP) and vice versa. The most attractive feature of the R-D estimation is low complexity of computing the R-D data because its major operation is just to obtain a histogram or weighted histogram of DCT coefficients from an input picture. Furthermore, it is accurate enough to be applied to the practical video coding. Therefore, the proposed rate control scheme using this R-D estimation model is appropriate for the applications requiring low delay and low complexity, and controls the output bit-rate ad quality accurately. Our rate control scheme ensures that the video buffer do not underflow and overflow by satisfying the buffer constraint and, additionally, prevents quality difference between consecutive frames from exceeding certain level by adopting the distortion constraint. In addition, a consistent considering the maximum tolerance BER of the voice service. Also in Rician fading channel of K=6 and K=10, considering CLP=$10^{-3}$ as a criterion, it is observed that the performance improment of about 3.5 dB and 1.5 dB is obtained, respectively, in terms of $E_b$/$N_o$ by employing the concatenated FEC code with pilot symbols.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the packet error probability of DS/CDMA-Trellis Coded QPSK modulation signal with MRC(Maximum Ratio Combining) diversity reception in Rician fading, multi-user interferences and multipath channel. And then we have evaluated the performance and capacity of DS/CDMA-Trellis Coded QPSK system using the MRC diversity reception as a function of direct power to indirect power ratio ($K_R$), the number of diversity branch(M), the number of multi-user(U), PN chip rate(PN), the number of multipath channel($L_P$), and packet length(PL). From the results, we know that the coding gain of DS/CDMA-Trellis Coded QPSK system with 2 branch MRC diversity is about 6 dB against uncoded DS/CDMA BPSK system with 2 branch MRC diversity in Rician fading ($K_R=6dB), 5 multi-user interferences, and 3 multipath channel. And, we know that coded QPSK signal designed for the AWGN channel also perform well on a Rician fading channel with MRC diversity reception. Consequently, we expected that proposed system structure is reliable to the wireless data communication system in Rician fading, multi-user interferences, and multipath channel.

  • In this paper, we propose the trellis coded spread spectrum communication system with one channel signal selection of the subset by the PN code. This paper proposes the Viterbi decoder that have the squared Euclidean distance of the order phase difference as well as 1st order phase difference as the branch metrics by using the multiple symbol detection method. TCM method was developed to overcome limited power and bandwidth efficiently in digital communication. we multiply one of convolution code's output data to PN code for applying TCM to the spread spectrum. We investigated the performance of the direct sequence/spread spectrum communication system with trellis coded modulation. In this system, we could improved the coding gain in the spread spectrum.

  • Low-power motion estimation is required for video coding in portable information devices. In this paper, we propose a low-power motion estimation algorithm and 1-D systolic may VLSI architecture using full search block matching algorithm (FSBMA). Main power dissipation sources of FSBMA are complex computations and frequent memory accesses for data in the search area. In the proposed algorithm, memory accesses and computations are reduced by using 1D PE (processing array) array architecture performing motion estimation of two neighboring blocks in parallel and by skipping unnecessary computations during motion estimation. The VLSI implementation results of the algorithm show that the proposed VLSI architecture can save 9.3% power dissipation and can operate two times faster than an existing low-power motion estimator.
