Effective stiffness of short fiber composite with a three-dimensional random orientation of fibers is derived theoretically and compared with available experimental data. The laminate analogy and transformed laminate analogy are used for modulus prediction of 2-D and 3-D random composites, respectively. The effective stiffness of random oriented fiber composite can be expressed in terms of longitudinal and transverse stiffnesses of unidirectional composites. The result of transformed laminate analogy is more accurate than other approaches such as, Christensen-Waals equational and Lavengood-Goettler equation, etc. Also the effective properties of random oriented fiber composite can be expressed in terms of fiber and matrix properties such as elastic modulus, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio.
Construction industry is one of the largest markets for composite materials. Composite materials are mostly utilized as surface coatings or concrete reinforcements, and they can hardly be found as a load bearing member in buildings. The three-dimensional composite structures with considerable bending, compressive and shear strengths are capable to be used as construction load bearing members. However, these composites cannot compete with other materials due to higher manufacturing costs. If the cost issue is resolved or their excellent performance is taken into consideration to overcome disadvantages related to economic-competitive challenges, these 3D composites can significantly reduce the construction time and result in lighter and safer buildings. Sandwich composite panels reinforced with 3D woven glass fabrics are amongst composites with highest bending strength. The current study investigates the possibility of utilizing these composite materials to construct ceilings and their application as slabs. One-to-one scale experimental loading of these composite panels shows a remarkable bending strength. Simulation results using ABAQUS software, also indicate that theoretical predictions of bending behavior of these panels are in good agreement with the observed experimental results.
This paper predicted the thermal conductivity of spatially reinforced composites(SRC) by applying the volume averaging method and the thermal resistance method. The former method employs existing micro-mechanical theories and conventional transformation rules to obtain the constitutive relations for the unit cells of the composites and the latter one uses the analogy between the diffusion of heat and electrical charge. To verify the theoretical predictions, the thermal conductivity of 4-D(dimensional) SRC was examined experimentally. The comparison of the numerical results with those measured by the experiment showed good agreement.

In this study, the effect of surface treatment of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Composites) on the shear strength of CFRP/metal composites was investigated. The surface of 14 plied unidirectional (0-dog ) CFRP was treated by an $Ar^{/}$ + ion beam under an oxygen environment. Shear strength tests were performed using SLS (Single Lap Shear) specimens based on the ASTM D906-94a procedure. The shear strength of the surface-treated CFRP/metal composites was compared with that of the untreated CFRP/metal composites. The results showed that the shear strength of surface-treated CFRP/metal composites was 36% greater than that of untreated CFRP/metal composites.
Chop molding composites and 2D carbon/carbon composites were manufactured by hot press molding method. Phenol resin of novolac type was used for matrix precursor and PAN-based carbon, PAN-based graphite and pitch-based carbon fiber were used for reinforcement and boron oxide was used for oxidation retardant. All of the composites were treated by $2000^{\circ}C$ and $2400^{\circ}C$ graphitization process, respectively. After graphitization process, amount of a boron residue in carbon/carbon composites is much according to irregularity of used raw materials. Under the presence of boron in carbon/carbon composites, catalytic effect of boron was a little at $2000^{\circ}C$ graphitization temperature. However, it was quite at $2400^{\circ}C$ graphitization.
4D carbon fiber preforms were manufactured by weaving method and their carbon fiber volume fractions were 50% and 60%. In order to form carbon matrix on the preform, coal tar pitch was used for matrix precursor and high density carbon/carbon composites were obtained by high densification process. In this process, manufacture of high density composites was more effective according to pressure increasement. When densificating the preform of 60% fiber volume fraction with 900 bar, density of the composites reached at 1.90 $g/cm^3$ after three times processing. Degree of pressure in the densification process controls macro pore but it can not affect micro pore. During the carbonization process, micro pore of the preform were filled fully by once or twice densification processing. But micro pore were not filled easily in the repeating process. Therefore, over three times densification processing is the filling micro pore.

This study investigates the flexural properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforced basalt/epoxy composites under conditions with and without moisture absorption. The basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were fabricated using 1 wt% silanized MWCNTs and kept in seawater for over 4 months. The flexural properties of the moisture absorbed specimens were evaluated and compared with those of dry specimens. The flexural properties of basalt/CNT/epoxy composites were found to decrease with moisture absorption. The flexural strength and modulus of moisture absorbed specimens were 22% and 16% lower, respectively, than those of the dry specimen. Scanning electron microscope examination of the fracture surfaces revealed that the decreases of flexural properties in the moisture absorbed specimen were due to the weakening of interfacial bonding from swelling of the epoxy matrix.
In this study, a thermal-gradient chemical vapor infiltration (TG-CVI) process was numerically studied in order to enhance the deposition uniformity within the preform. The computational fluid dynamics technique was used to solve the governing equations for heat transfer and gas flow during the TG-CVI process for two- and three-dimensional (2-D and 3-D) models. The temperature profiles in the 2-D and 3-D models showed good agreement with each other and with the experimental results. The densification process was investigated in a 2-D axisymmetric model. Computation results showed the distribution of the SiC deposition rate within the preform. The results also showed that using two-zone heater gave better deposition uniformity.

In order to describe the mechanical behavior of highly anisotropic and asymmetric materials such as fiberreinforced composites, the elastic-plastic constitutive equations were used here based on the recently developed yield criterion and hardening laws. As for the yield criterion, modified Drucker-Prager yield surface was used to represent the orthotropic and asymetric properties of composite materials, while the anisotropic evolution of backstress was accounted for the hardening behavior. Experimental procedures to obtain the material parameters of the hardening laws and yield surface are presented for 3D Circular Braided Glass Fiber Reinforced Composites. For verification purpose, comparisons of finite element simulations using the elastic-plastic constitutive equations, anisotropic elastic constitutive equations and experiments were performed for the three point bending tests. The results of finite element simulations showed good agreements with experiments, especially for the elastic-plastic constitutive equations with yield criterion considering anisotropy as well as asymmetry and anisotropic back stress evolution rule.
