Improving Nutritional Quality of Cocoa Pod (Theobroma cacao) through Chemical and Biological Treatments for Ruminant Feeding: In vitro and In vivo Evaluation

  • Cocoa pod is among the by-products of cocoa (Theobroma cacao) plantations. The aim of this study was to apply a number of treatments in order to improve nutritional quality of cocoa pod for feeding of ruminants. Cocoa pod was subjected to different treatments, i.e. C (cocoa pod without any treatment or control), CAm (cocoa pod+1.5% urea), CMo (cocoa pod+3% molasses), CRu (cocoa pod+3% rumen content) and CPh (cocoa pod+3% molasses+Phanerochaete chrysosporium inoculum). Analysis of proximate and Van Soest's fiber fraction were performed on the respective treatments. The pods were then subjected to an in vitro digestibility evaluation by incubation in rumen fluid-buffer medium, employing a randomized complete block design (n = 3 replicates). Further, an in vivo evaluation of the pods (35% inclusion level in total mixed ration) was conducted by feeding to young Holstein steers (average body weight of $145{\pm}3.6kg$) with a $5{\times}5$ latin square design arrangement (n = 5 replicates). Each experimental period lasted for 30 d; the first 20 d was for feed adaptation, the next 3 d was for sampling of rumen liquid, and the last 7 d was for measurements of digestibility and N balance. Results revealed that lignin content was reduced significantly when cocoa pod was treated with urea, molasses, rumen content or P. chrysosporium (p<0.01) with the following order of effectiveness: CPh>CAm>CRu>CMo. Among all treatments, CAm and CPh treatments significantly improved the in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility (p<0.05) of cocoa pod. Average daily gain of steers receiving CAm or CPh treatment was significantly higher than that of control (p<0.01) with an increase of 105% and 92%, respectively. Such higher daily gain was concomitant with higher N retention and proportion of N retention to N intake in CAm and CPh treatments than those of control (p<0.05). It can be concluded from this study that treatment with either urea or P. chrysosporium is effective in improving the nutritive value of cocoa pod.

임플란트 배열과 하중 방향이 임플란트와 치조골에 미치는 유한요소 응력분석 (Effects of implant alignment and load direction on mandibular bone and implant: finite element analysis)

  • 목적: 수복물에 교합력을 가할때 식립된 임플란트의 개수, 배열 및 위치에 따른 임플란트, 보철물 및 지지 골에 발생하는 응력의 차이를 분석하고자 한다. 연구 재료 및 방법: 하악에 임플란트가 식립되어 고정성 보철물을 지지하는 4 종류의 3D 유한요소 모형을 제작하였다. 모델 M1은 2개의 임플란트 가운데에 가공치를 배열하였고, 모델 M2는 2개의 임플란트 외측에 캔티레버 가공치를 배열하였다. 모델 M3과 M4는 3개의 임플란트를 각각 일렬로 배열되거나, 엇갈리게 배열하였다. 총 120 N 크기의 수직력과 45도 측방력을 가하였고, 유한요소 응력 분석을 시행하였다 결과: 측방력 하중에 의해 발생한 최대 응력은 수직력 하중에 의한 것 보다 임플란트 부위에서 3.4 - 5.1배 더 컸고, 지지골 내에서는 3.5 - 8.3배 더 컸다. 모델 M2 의 고정성 보철물의 캔티레버 연결부에서 가장 큰 응력이 집중되었다. 임플란트 개수가 3개인 모델들이 2개인 경우보다 더 낮은 응력이 발생하였으나 M3과 M4에서 일렬 배열과 엇갈린 배열간의 응력 발생 차이는 작았다. 결론: 임플란트 배열의 엇갈림 정도는 응력 크기에 별 차이를 발생하지 않았으나, 캔티래버의 존재나 임플란트의 개수의 차이는 큰 영향을 주었다.

혼성방파제에 작용하는 3차원 파압구조에 미치는 위상차의 영향 (The Phase Difference Effects on 3-D Structure of Wave Pressure Acting on a Composite Breakwater)

  • 현재 해안구조물의 설계시에는 현지관측을 토대로 한 Goda식(Goda, 1974)과 같은 경험식이나 2차원적인 수리수치모형실험을 통한 파력값을 많이 사용하고 있다. 하지만, 이러한 2차원 해석결과들은 실해역에 설치된 구조물의 평면배치형상에 따라 변화하는 작용파력의 3차원 구조를 재현하기에는 무리가 있는 듯 하다. 특히, 혼성방파제와 같은 대형구조물의 항외측과 항내측에서 위상차가 발생하는 경우에는 구조물의 단면별로 파력이 각기 다르게 작용할 것으로 판단된다. 본 연구에서는, 해안구조물에 작용하는 파력의 3차원구조를 명확히 하기 위하여, 투과성구조물 및 쇄파현상에도 적용이 가능한 기존의 수치해석기법(Hur and Mizutani, 2003)에 Large Eddy Simulation(LES)기법을 도입한 새로운 3차원 수치해석기법을 제안하였으며, 이 기법을 이용하여 얻어진 잠제상 구조물에서의 작용파력 계산치를 기존의 수리모형실험치와 비교한 결과, 좋은 일치성을 확인하였다. 또한, 대형해안구조물 중 혼성방파제를 본 연구의 대상구조물로하여, 사석마운드로의 투과 및 개구부로의 회절의 영향으로 인해 발생하는 위상차를 고려한 3차원 파력구조에 관해 논의하였으며, 2차원 해석으로는 규명할 수 없었던 3차원적인 동적 파력특성을 파악할 수 있었다.

Age and weight at first mating affects plasma leptin concentration but no effects on reproductive performance of gilts

  • The objective of this study was to verify the best mating age of gilts at the first parity. Gilts (n = 86) were divided into nine groups in a factorial arrangement with three Ages (AG1, ${\leq}220d$; AG2, 220 to 240 d; AG3, $240{\leq}d$), and three weights (WT1 ${\leq}140kg$; WT2, 140 to 149 kg; WT3, $150{\leq}kg$). A higher body weight gain in AG2 sows during gestation. Sows in AG2 group showed a higher body weight gain at first parity and backfat gain in the parity 2 and 3 during gestation. A greater insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) was observed in AG1 sows compared with AG3 sows at weaning in the second parity. Sows in WT1 group showed a significant positive effect on the plasma IGF-1 at breeding and weaning time in parity 2. Sows in AG3 group showed a higher plasma leptin at breeding, farrowing, and weaning in the parity 1, and at farrowing in parity 2. Sows in WT3 group showed a higher plasma leptin at breeding, farrowing, and weaning in the parities 1 and 2. Considering the insignificant longevity results, the most efficient time for gilts insemination can be at 220 d when their body weight is 140 kg or lower.

Influence of Lighting Schedule and Nutrient Density in Broiler Chickens: Effect on Growth Performance, Carcass Traits and Meat Quality

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of lighting schedule and nutrient density on growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality of broiler chickens. A total of 576 day old Arbor Acre male chickens was used with a $4{\times}2$ factorial arrangement. The four lighting schedules were continuous (23 L:1 D, CL), 20 L:4 D (12 L:2 D:8 L:2 D), 16 L:8 D (12 L:3 D:2 L:3 D: 2 L:2 D) and 12 L:12 D (9 L:3 D:1 L:3 D:1 L:3 D:1 L:3 D) and provided by incandescent bulbs. The two nutrient densities were high (H, starter diet: 13.39 MJ/kg apparent metabolisable energy (AME), 23.00% crude protein (CP); finisher diet: 13.39 MJ AME/kg, 19.70% CP) and low energy and protein level (L, starter diet: 12.03 MJ AME/kg, 20.80% CP; finisher diet: 12.14 MJ AME/kg, 18.30% CP). Houses with dark curtains and solid sidewalls were used. Chickens were randomly allocated to the 8 treatments with each treatment comprising 6 replicates of 12 chickens. Feed and water were available ad libitum. Lighting schedules showed no difference (p>0.05) in growth performance at the end of the experiment. 12 L:12 D significantly reduced (p<0.05) the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA) compared to 23 L:1 D treatment. Intermittent lighting (IL) schedules produced higher protein content (p<0.001) in breast meat. Birds on high density diets had higher body weight (BW), feed intake (FI) (p<0.001), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (p<0.001) throughout the experiment with the exception of 36 to 42 d. High nutrient density increased (p<0.05) abdominal fat, decreased (p<0.05) the moisture loss of meat, and reduced percentage of wings and legs. There was a significant lighting schedule${\times}$diet interaction (p<0.001) on FCR for days 8 to 14 and 15 to 21. Results indicated that IL can give similar growth performance in comparison with CL, meanwhile with positive effects on meat quality by increasing protein content and decreasing the concentration of MDA. High nutrient density resulted in greater growth performance.

  • This study is characteristic analysis to optimize triggering of a high-power trigatron by FEM which is used to analyse electric field distribution in the trigatron. Triggering characteristics of a trigatron depends on arrangement of voltage polarity applied on electrodes and configuration of electrodes. This study is the preliminary stage for an experiment and make it possible to experiment effectively by finding optimal triggering characteristics though 3-dimensional node-based FEM which can practically model the complex structured electrode system.

  • We have proposed a 3 phase, 100 MVA, 154 kV class HTS transformer substituting for a 60 MVA conventional transformer. The power transformer of 154 kV class has a tertiary winding besides primary and secondary windings. So the HTS transformer should have the 3rd superconducting winding. In this paper, we designed conceptually the structure of the superconducting windings of a single phase 33 MVA transformer. The electrical characteristics of the HTS transformer such as % impedance and AC loss vary with the arrangement of the windings and gaps between windings. We analyzed the effects of the winding parameters, evaluated the cost of each design, and proposed a suitable HTS transformer model for future power distribution system.

Analysis of Off-axis Integral Floating System Using Concave Mirror

  • An off-axis integral floating system using a concave mirror is analyzed to resolve the image distortion incurred by the off-axis optical arrangement. The concave mirror can be adopted as the floating device to improve the optical efficiency. The image distortion due to the tilting axis of the concave mirror needs to be analyzed precisely to generate the pre-distortion image. In this paper, we calculate the image deformation in the off-axis structure of the concave mirror using the geometrical optics. Using the calculation results, the compensated elemental image can be generated for the pre-distortion integrated image, which can be projected to the floating 3D image without image distortion. The basic experiments of the off-axis integral floating are presented to prove and verify the proposal.

50 kHz 체장어군탐지기용 분할 빔 음향 변환기의 개발 (Development of Split-beam Acoustic Transducer for a 50 kHz Fish Sizing Echo Sounder)

  • An improved split-beam transducer for a 50 kHz fish-sizing echo sounder was developed. The main objective of this study was to minimize the side lobe level in the beam pattern and the distance between acoustic centers for adjacent transducer quadrants in the geometrical arrangement of array elements while maintaining a given number of transducer elements and beam width. To achieve these goals, a 32-element planar array transducer ($6{\times}6$ array with one element in each corner missing) was designed using the Dolph-Chebyshev shading function to suppress side lobes in the array beam pattern and fabricated by arranging the inter-element spacing to be substantially equal to half the wavelength using the transducer element of 0.4 times the wavelength in diameter. The performance characteristics of this split-beam transducer were evaluated in the experimental water tank of $5m{\times}5m{\times}6m$ (length${\times}$height${\times}$width). In this study, the design goal of the beam width and side lobe level for transmitting a beam pattern was initially set at $21^{\circ}$ and -30 dB, respectively. However, the measured beam width at 3 dB was $21^{\circ}$ in both directions with side lobe levels of -24.7 dB in the horizontal plane and -25.6 dB in the vertical plane. The averaged beam width at -3 dB of the receiving beam patterns for four receiving quadrants was $31.4^{\circ}$. The transmitting voltage response was 161.5 dB (re $1{\mu}Pa$/V at 1 m) at 50.23 kHz with a bandwidth of 2.16 kHz, and the averaged receiving sensitivity for four receiving quadrants was -178.13 dB (re 1 V/${\mu}Pa$) at 49.8 kHz with a bandwidth of 2.64 kHz.

Prepartum Feeding of Cationic or Anionic Diets to Holstein Cows Given 30 or 60 Day Dry Periods: Comparison of Dry Matter Intake, Physiological Measures and Milk Production

  • Eighty-four Holstein cows were used to evaluate effects of feeding two diets that differed in dietary cation-anion difference (cationic; +28 or anionic; -138 mEq/kg DM) on prepartum and postpartum dry matter intake (DMI), body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), serum Ca concentrations and on subsequent milk production and composition. Treatments were in a $2{\times}3{\times}2$ factorial arrangement that included prepartum diet, dry period length (30 d dry, 30 d dry+estradiol cypionate (ECP), and 60 d dry), and prepartum and postpartum bST ($POSILAC^{(R)}$ 10.2 mg/d). No interaction of prepartum diet with dry period length or bST supplementation was detected for any measure evaluated either prepartum or postpartum. No significant effects of prepartum diet on prepartum DMI, BW or BCS were observed. Mean DMI during the first 28 d postpartum were similar for cows fed the cationic or anionic diets prepartum (25.5 vs. 26.1 kg/d). During postpartum wk 1 to 14, no differences in mean BW or BCS were detected due to prepartum diet fed but decreases for both groups were observed during the first 6 wk postpartum. No differences due to prepartum diet were observed for mean milk or 3.5% FCM yields or for milk composition during the first 10 wk of lactation. Similarly, mean milk yield of cows during the first 21 wk did not differ significantly due to prepartum diet fed (38.5 vs. 38.6 kg/d). Overall, cows fed the prepartum cationic or anionic diets had similar mean postpartum serum concentrations of Ca (9.34 vs. 9.35 mg/dl). Subsequent milk production, milk composition and concentrations of Ca did not differ. Importantly, the two prepartum diets were equally satisfactory in minimizing incidence of milk fever and in supporting initiation of lactation, irrespective of dry period length and supplemental ECP and bST.
