Realistic Modeling is to maximize the reality of the environment in which perception is made by virtual environment or remote control using two or more senses of human. Especially, the field of haptic rendering, which provides reality through interaction of visual and tactual sense in realistic model, has brought attention. Haptic rendering calculates the force caused by model deformation during interaction with a virtual model and returns it to the user. Deformable model in the haptic rendering has more complexity than a rigid body because the deformation is calculated inside as well as the outside the model. For this model, Gibson suggested the 3D ChainMail algorithm using volumetric data. However, in case of the deformable model with non-homogeneous materials, there were some discordances between visual and tactual sense information when calculating the force-feedback in real time. Therefore, we propose an algorithm for the Volume Haptic Rendering of non-homogeneous deformable object that reflects the force-feedback consistently in real time, depending on visual information (the amount of deformation), without any post-processing.

As virtual reality technologies are advanced rapidly, how to render 3D objects across modalities is becoming an important issue. This study is therefore aimed to investigate human discriminability on the curvature of 3D polygonal surfaces with focusing on the vision and touch senses because they are most dominant when explore 3D shapes. For the study, we designed a psychophysical experiment using signal detection theory to determine curvature discrimination for three conditions: haptic only, visual only, and both haptic and visual. The results show that there is no statistically significant difference among the conditions although the threshold in the haptic condition is the lowest. The results also indicate that rendering using both visual and haptic channels could degrade the performance of discrimination on a 3D global shape. These results must be considered when a multimodal rendering system is designed in near future.
This paper presents a robotic system that provides telepresence to the visually impaired by combining real-time haptic rendering with multi-modal interaction. A virtual-proxy based haptic rendering process using a RGB-D sensor is developed and integrated into a unified framework for control and feedback for the telepresence robot. We discuss the challenging problem of presenting environmental perception to a user with visual impairments and our solution for multi-modal interaction. We also explain the experimental design and protocols, and results with human subjects with and without visual impairments. Discussion on the performance of our system and our future goals are presented toward the end.
The objective of this study is to propose an efficient 3D reconstruction method for developing a stereo-vision-based haptics system which can replace "robotic eyes" and "robotic touch." The haptic rendering for 3D images requires to capture depth information and edge information of stereo images. This paper proposes the 3D reconstruction methods using LoG(Laplacian of Gaussian) algorithm and DoG(Difference of Gaussian) algorithm for edge detection in addition to the basic 3D depth extraction method for better haptic rendering. Also, some experiments are performed for evaluating the CPU time and the error rates of those methods. The experimental results lead us to conclude that the DoG method is more efficient for haptic rendering. This paper may contribute to investigate the effective methods for 3D image reconstruction such as in improving the performance of mobile patrol robots.

The virtual reality - haptic device is developed for the purpose used in the work that human cannot approach and that need elaborate exercises. To render haptic, the total system is constituted master, haptic device, and slave, remote manipulator. Human operates the remote manipulator. Human operates the remote manipulator relying on the hapti devices and stereo graphic. And then the force and scene of the remote manipulator is fed-back from each haptic devices and virtual devices. The feedback information gets system gain exactly. The system gain provides the most exact haptic and virtual devices. The feedback information gets system gain exactly. The system gain provides the most exact haptic and scene to human by the location, the graphic rendering and the haptic rendering algorithm on real-time. In this research, 3D haptic device is developed for common usage and make human feel the haptic when human contacts virtual object rendered by computer graphic. The haptic device is good for tracing location and producing devices because of the row structure. Also, openGL and Visual Basic is utilized to the algorithms for haptic rendering. The haptic device of this research makes the interface possible not only with virtual reality but also with the real remote manipulator.
Shaping realistic hairstyles for digital characters is a difficult, long and tedious task. The lack of appropriate interaction metaphors enabling efficient and simple, yet accurate hair modeling further aggravates the situation. This paper presents 3D interaction metaphors for modeling virtual hair using haptic interfaces. We discuss user tasks, ergonomic aspects, as well as haptics-based styling and fine-tuning tools on an experimental prototype. In order to achieve faster haptic rates with respect to the hair simulation and obtain a transparent rendering, we adapt our simulation models to comply with the specific requirements of haptic hairstyling actions and decouple the simulation of the hair strand dynamics from the haptic rendering while relying on the same physiochemical hair constants. Besides the direct use of the discussed interaction metaphors in the 3D modeling area, the presented results have further application potential in hair modeling facilities for the entertainment industry and the cosmetic sciences.

In this work, we present interactive automultiscopic content with mobile surface haptics for multimodal interaction. Our system consists of a 40-view automultiscopic display and a tablet supporting surface haptics in an immersive room. Animated graphics are projected onto the walls of the room. The 40-view automultiscopic display is placed at the center of the front wall. The haptic tablet is installed at the mobile station to enable the user to interact with the tablet. The 40-view real-time rendering and multiplexing technology is applied by establishing virtual cameras in the convergence layout. Surface haptics rendering is synchronized with three-dimensional (3D) objects on the display for real-time haptic interaction. We conduct an experiment to evaluate user experiences of the proposed system. The results demonstrate that the system's multimodal interaction provides positive user experiences of immersion, control, user interface intuitiveness, and 3D effects.
We propose a haptic rendering technology for touchable video. Our touchable video technique allows users for feeling the sense of touch while probing directly on 2D objects in video scenes or manipulating 3D objects brought out from video scenes using haptic devices. In our technique, a server sends video and haptic data as well as the information of 3D model objects. The clients receive video and haptic data from the server and render 3D models. A video scene is divided into small grids, and each cell has its tactile information which corresponds to a specific combination of four attributes: stiffness, damping, static friction, and dynamic friction. Users can feel the sense of touch when they touch directly cells of a scene using a haptic device. Users can also examine objects by touching or manipulating them after bringing out the corresponding 3D objects from the screen. Our touchable video technique proposed in this paper can lead us to feel maximum satisfaction the haptic-audio-vidual effects directly on the video scenes of movies or home-shopping video contents.

In this paper, we propose a new graphic deformation algorithm for haptic interface system. Our deformable model is based on non-linear elasticity, anisotropy behavior and the finite element method. Also we developed controller for high-speed communication. The proposed controller is based on the PCI/FPGA technology, which could progress the capability of the position calculating and the force data transmitting. The haptic system is composed of the 6DOF force display device, the high-speed controller, HIR library for 3D graphic deformation algorithm and the haptic rendering algorithm. The developed system will be used on constructing the dynamical virtual environment. We demonstrate the relevance of this approach for the real-time simulating deformations of elastic objects. To show the efficiency of our system, we programmed the simulation of force reflecting. As the result of experiment, we found that it has high stability and easy to control for deformable object than some other systems.
Vector field has been commonly used to visualize the data set which is invisible or is hard to explain. For instance, it could be used to visualize scientific data such as the direction and amount of wind and water field, transfer of heat through thermally conductive materials, and electromagnetic field. In this paper, we present a technique to enable intuitive recognition of the data though haptic feedback along with visual feedback. To add tactile information to graphical vector field, we model a haptic vector field and then apply it to the haptic map to guide a user to destination and haptic simulation of water field on 2D images whish can be used ill everyday life. These systems allow one to recognize vector information intuitively through haptic interface. We expect that the haptic rendering technique of vector field can be applied to various applications such as education, training, and entertainment.
