  • At the stage of content convergence into cell phone, technologies for geo-spatial information sharing and searching are being developed. Currently, 2D portable navigation map for mobile navigation is provided by communication companies, but geobrowers for 3D geo-information in cell phone are under developing. In this study, 3D feature transformation among X3D-M3G-KML, on mobile and web environments, is dealt with as the first stage for the further mobile 3D web application. As well, it is possible to real-time interoperable 3D geo-information exchange issues within both environments.

  • Based on current practical needs for geo-spatial information on mobile platform, the main theme of this study is a design and implementation of dynamic 3D terrain rendering system using spaceborne imagery, as a kind of texture image for photo-realistic 3D scene generation on mobile environment. Image processing and 3D graphic techniques and algorithms, such as TIN-based vertex generation with regular spacing elevation data for generating 3D terrain surface, image tiling and image-vertex texturing in order to resolve limited resource of mobile devices, were applied and implemented by using graphic pipeline of OpenGL|ES (Embedded System) API. Through this implementation and its tested results with actual data sets of DEM and satellite imagery, we demonstrated the realizable possibility and adaptation of complex typed and large sized 3D geo-spatial information in mobile devices. This prototype system can be used to mobile 3D applications with DEM and satellite imagery in near future.

  • In this study the spatial distribution characters of forest in forest damaged area were first considered by analyzing spatial data and monitoring forest landscape. Then suitable tree species on each site were selected through the weighted score analysis of GIS analysis methods. Finally, the best forest stand arrangement method could be presented on the 3D based simulation system for the advanced reforestation technology in Korea. For this purpose, the virtual reforestation system was implemented by using the concept of virtual GIS and CBD (Component Based Development) method. By use of this system the change offorest landscape of burnt forest area some years after reforestation practice could be detected and monitored by applying the site index and 3D modeling method.

  • Geotechnical Information which had been constructing and offering by Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs (MLTM) has been target on the whole of country. Today, the 100,000 number of geotechnical data has been managed as 2d GIS database. But, it is difficult to apply this database for analyzing and designing geotechnical works. In this paper, we have developed Geotechnical Information Application System (GIAS) based 3d geo-spatial information technique for the effective uses. First, GIAS based on GIS framework was implemented to effectively find out spatial geologic structure of study area. Second, we invited some experts from each field and listened their opinions. According to the surveying on the applicability-ratio, the experts showed higher interest in this system. In this study, it was verified that the 3d GIS-based system was very useful for the usability-ratio.

  • According to the purpose of applications, the application program will utilize the most suitable data model and 3D modeling data would be generated based on the selected data model. In these reasons, there are various data sets to represent the same geographical features. The duplicated data sets bring serious problems in system interoperability and data compatibility issues, as well in finance issues of geo-spatial information industries. In order to overcome the problems, this study proposes a spatial data fusion method using topological relationships among spatial objects in the feature classes, called Topological Relation Model (TRM). The TRM is a spatial data fusion method implemented in application-level, which means that the geometric data generated by two different data models are used directly without any data exchange or conversion processes in an application system to provide indoor LBSs. The topological relationships are defined and described by the basic concepts of IndoorGML. After describing the concepts of TRM, experimental implementations of the proposed data fusion method in 3D GIS are presented. In the final section, the limitations of this study and further research are summarized.

  • Realistic 3D building construction in urban area has become an important issue because of increasing demand of 3D geo-spatial information in many application. Contrary to the conventional 3D building model construction approach using aerial images and high-resolution satellite imagery, it has been researched widely in building reconstruction using high-accuracy aerial LIDAR data in the latest. This paper presents a method for 3D building construction through building outlines extraction by LoG operator's Zero-crossing and line generation and refinement by Douglas-Peucker algorithm.

  • Geo-features play a key role in object-oriented or feature-based geo-processing system. So the strategy for how-to-model and how-to-manage the geo-features builds the main architecture of the entire system and also supports the efficiency and functionality of the system. Unlike the conventional 2D geo-processing system, geo-features in 3D GIS have lots to be considered to model regarding the efficient manipulation and analysis and visualization. When the system is running on the Web, it should also be considered that how to leverage the level of detail and the level of automation of modeling in addition to the support for client side data interoperability. We built a set of 3D geo-features, and each geo-feature contains a set of aspatial data and 3D geo-primitives. The 3D geo-primitives contain the fundamental modeling data such as the height of building and the burial depth of gas pipeline. We separated the additional modeling data on the geometry and appearance of the model from the fundamental modeling data to make the table in database more concise and to allow the users more freedom to represent the geo-object. To get the users to build and exchange their own data, we devised a fie format called VGFF 2.0 which stands for Virtual GIS File Format. It is to describe the three dimensional geo-information in XML(extensible Markup Language). The DTD(Document Type Definition) of VGFF 2.0 is parsed using the DOM(Document Object Model). We also developed the authoring tools for users can make their own 3D geo-features and model and save the data to VGFF 2.0 format. We are now expecting the VGFF 2.0 evolve to the 3D version of SVG(Scalable Vector Graphics) especially for 3D GIS on the Web.

  • In this study, an integrated 3D modeling and rendering system dealing with 3D urban landscape features such as terrain, building, road and user-defined geometric ones was designed and implemented using $OPENGL\;{|}\;ES$ (Embedded System) API for mobile devices of PDA. In this system, the authoring functions are composed of several parts handling urban landscape features: vertex-based geometry modeling, editing and manipulating 3D landscape objects, generating geometrically complex type features with attributes for 3D objects, and texture mapping of complex types using image library. It is a kind of feature-based system, linked with 3D geo-based spatial feature attributes. As for the rendering process, some functions are provided: optimizing of integrated multiple 3D landscape objects, and rendering of texture-mapped 3D landscape objects. By the active-synchronized process among desktop system, OPENGL-based 3D visualization system, and mobile system, it is possible to transfer and disseminate 3D feature models through both systems. In this mobile 3D urban processing system, the main graphical user interface and core components is implemented under EVC 4.0 MFC and tested at PDA running on windows mobile and Pocket Pc. It is expected that the mobile 3D geo-spatial information systems supporting registration, modeling, and rendering functions can be effectively utilized for real time 3D urban planning and 3D mobile mapping on the site.

  • Today's commercial high resolution satellite imagery such as IKONOS and QuickBird, offers the potential to extract useful spatial information for geographical database construction and GIS applications. Recognizing this potential use of high resolution satellite imagery, KARI is performing a project for developing Korea multipurpose satellite 3(KOMPSAT-3). Therefore, it is necessary to develop techniques for various GIS applications of KOMPSAT-3, using similar high resolution satellite imagery. As fundamental studies for this purpose, we focused on the extraction of 3D spatial information and the update of existing GIS data from QuickBird imagery. This paper examines the scheme for rectification of high resolution image, and suggests the convenient semi-automatic algorithm for extraction of 3D building information from a single image. The algorithm is based on triangular vector structure that consists of a building bottom point, its corresponding roof point and a shadow end point. The proposed method could increase the number of measurable building, and enhance the digitizing accuracy and the computation efficiency.
