  • Computed tomography (CT) can completely digitize the interior and the exterior of nearly any object without any destruction. Generally, the resolution for industrial CT is below a few microns. The industrial CT scanning, however, has a limitation because it requires long measuring and processing time. Whereas, 2D X-ray imaging is fast. In this paper, we propose a novel concept of 3D non-destructive inspection technique using the advantages of both micro-CT and dual X-ray images. After registering the master object’s CT data and the sample objects’ dual X-ray images, 3D non-destructive inspection is possible by analyzing the matching results. Calculation for the registration is accelerated by parallel computing using graphics processing unit (GPU).

  • Multi-detector row CT (MDCT) provides faster speed, longer coverage in conjunction with thin slices, improved spatial resolution, and ability to produce high quality muliplanar and three-dimensional (3D) images. MDCT has revolutionized the non-invasive evaluation of the central airways. Simultaneous display of axial, multiplanar, and 3D images raises precision and accuracy of the radiologic diagnosis of central airway disease. This article introduces central airway imaging with MDCT emphasizing on the emerging role of multiplanar and 3D reconstruction.

DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine) File로 전송하여 Infinia Hawkeye4의 Xeleris Workstation에서 IR (Image Registration)한 후 Intergrating 3D (three Dimension)로 융합(Fusion)하여 2D(two Dimension)영상을 3D (three Dimension)영상으로 Rendering하였다.

  • Virtual Brain-endoscopy is an effective method to detect lesion in brain. Brain is the most part of the human and is not easy part to operate so that reconstructing in 3D may be very helpful to doctors. In this paper, it is suggested that to increase the reliability, method of matching 3D object with the 2D CT slice. 3D Brain-endoscopy is reconstructed with 35 slices of 2D CT images. There is a plate in 3D brain-endoscopy so as to drag upward or downward to match the relevant 2D CT image. Relevant CT image guides the user to recognize the exact part he or she is investigating. VRML Script is used to make the change in images and PlaneSensor node is used to transmit the y coordinate value with the CT image. The result is test on the PC which has the following spec. 400MHz Clock-speed, 512MB ram, and FireGL 3000 3D accelerator is set up. The VRML file size is 3.83MB. There was no delay in controlling the 3D world and no collision in changing the CT images. This brain-endoscopy can be also put to practical use on medical education through internet.

  • Purpose : To evaluate the usefulness of the reconstructed 3-dimensional image on the personal computer in comparison with that of the CT workstation by quantitative comparison and analysis. Materials and Methods : The spiral CT data obtained from 27 persons were transferred from the CT workstation to a personal computer, and they were reconstructed as 3-dimensional image on the personal computer using V-works 2.0/sup TM/. One observer obtained the 14 measurements on the reconstructed 3-dimensional image on both the CT workstation and the personal computer. Paired Nest was used to evaluate the intraobserver difference and the mean value of the each measurement on the CT workstation and the personal computer. Pearson correlation analysis and % incongruence were also performed. Results: I-Gn, N-Gn, N-A, N-Ns, B-A, and G-Op did not show any statistically significant difference (p>0.05), B-O, B-N, Eu-Eu, Zy-Zy, Biw, D-D, Orbrd R, and L had statistically significant difference (p<0.05), but the mean values of the differences of all measurements were below 2 mm, except for D-D. The value of correlation coefficient y was greater than 0.95 at I-Gn, N-Gn, N-A, N-Ns, B-A, B-N, G-Op, Eu-Eu, Zy-Zy, and Biw, and it was 0.75 at B-O, 0.78 at D-D, and 0.82 at both Orbrd Rand L. The % incongruence was below 4% at I-Gn, N-Gn, N-A, N-Ns, B-A, B-N, G-Op, Eu-Eu, Zy-Zy, and Biw, and 7.18%, 10.78%, 4.97%, 5.89% at B-O, D-D, Orbrd Rand L respectively. Conclusion : It can be considered that the utilization of the personal computer has great usefulness in reconstruction of the 3-dimensional image when it comes to the economics, accessibility and convenience, except for thin bones and the landmarks which are difficult to be located.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to develop a deep learning architecture combining two task models to generate synthetic computed tomography (sCT) images from low-tesla magnetic resonance (MR) images to improve metallic marker visibility. Methods: Twenty-three patients with cervical cancer treated with intracavitary radiotherapy (ICR) were retrospectively enrolled, and images were acquired using both a computed tomography (CT) scanner and a low-tesla MR machine. The CT images were aligned to the corresponding MR images using a deformable registration, and the metallic dummy source markers were delineated using threshold-based segmentation followed by manual modification. The deformed CT (dCT), MR, and segmentation mask pairs were used for training and testing. The sCT generation model has a cascaded three-dimensional (3D) U-Net-based architecture that converts MR images to CT images and segments the metallic marker. The performance of the model was evaluated with intensity-based comparison metrics. Results: The proposed model with segmentation loss outperformed the 3D U-Net in terms of errors between the sCT and dCT. The structural similarity score difference was not significant. Conclusions: Our study shows the two-task-based deep learning models for generating the sCT images using low-tesla MR images for 3D ICR. This approach will be useful to the MR-only workflow in high-dose-rate brachytherapy.

  • Background: The glenoid version of the shoulder joint correlates with the stability of the glenohumeral joint and the clinical results of total shoulder arthroplasty. We sought to analyze and compare the glenoid version measured by traditional axial two-dimensional (2D) computed tomography (CT) and three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed images at different levels. Methods: A total of 30 cases, including 15 male and 15 female patients, who underwent 3D shoulder CT imaging was randomly selected and matched by sex consecutively at one hospital. The angular difference between the scapular body axis and 2D CT slice axis was measured. The glenoid version was assessed at three levels (midpoint, upper one-third, and center of the lower circle of the glenoid) using Friedman's method in the axial plane with 2D CT images and at the same level of three different transverse planes using a 3D reconstructed image. Results: The mean difference between the scapular body axis on the 3D reconstructed image and the 2D CT slice axis was 38.4°. At the level of the midpoint of the glenoid, the measurements were 1.7°±4.9° on the 2D CT images and -1.8°±4.1° in the 3D reconstructed image. At the level of the center of the lower circle, the measurements were 2.7°±5.2° on the 2D CT images and -0.5°±4.8° in the 3D reconstructed image. A statistically significant difference was found between the 2D CT and 3D reconstructed images at all three levels. Conclusions: The glenoid version is measured differently between axial 2D CT and 3D reconstructed images at three levels. Use of 3D reconstructed imaging can provide a more accurate glenoid version profile relative to 2D CT. The glenoid version is measured differently at different levels.

Time of flight (TOF)CT, Attenuation CT, Reflection CT, Diffraction CT등으로 나눌수 있다.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dimensional errors between real tooth, 3D CT image and CARP model. Materials and Methods : Two maxilla and two mandible block bones with intact teeth were taken from two cadavers. Computed tomography was taken either in dry state and in wet state. After then, all teeth were extracted and the dimensions of the real teeth were measured using a digital caliper at mesio-distal and bucco-lingual width both in crown and cervical portion. 3D CT image was generated using the V-works $4.0^{TM}$ (Cybemed Inc., Seoul, Korea) software. Twelve teeth were randomly selected for CARP model fabrication. All the measurements of 3D Ct images and CARP models were made in the same manner of the real tooth group. Dimensional errors between real tooth, 3D CT image model and CARP model was calculated. Results : 1) Average of absolute error was 0.199 mm between real teeth and 3D CT image model, 0.169 mm between 3D CT image model and CARP model and 0.291 mm between real teeth and CARP model, respectively. 2) Average size of 3D CT image was smaller than real teeth by 0.149 mm and that of CARP model was smalier than 3D CT image model by 0.067mm. Conclusion : Within the scope of this study, CARP model with the 0.291 mm average of absolute eror can aid to enhance the success rate cf autogenous tooth transplantation due to the increased accuracy of recipient bone and donor tooth.
