Wax spin coating is a part of several wafer handling processes in the silicon wafer polishing station. It is important to ensure the wax layer free of contamination to achieve the high degree of planarization on wafers after wafer polishing. Three-dimensional air flow characteristics in a wax spin coater are numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics techniques. When the bottom of the wax spin coater is closed, there exists a significant recirculation zone over the rotating ceramic block. This recirculation zone can be the source of wax layer contamination at any rotational speed and should be avoided to maintain high wafer polishing quality. Thus, four air suction ducts are installed at the bottom of the wax spin coater in order to control the air flow pattern over the ceramic block. Present computational results show that the air suction from the bottom is quite an effective method to remove or minimize the recirculation zone over the ceramic block and the wax coating layer.
Oral cancer surgery changes the morphologic characteristics of the human upper airway. These changes can affect the flow patterns. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations with transient solver were performed to numerically investigate the air flows in the human upper airways depending oral cancer surgery. 3D reconstructed models were obtained from 2D CT images of one patient. For the boundary condition, the realistic breathing cycle of human was applied. The hydraulic diameters of cross-sections for post-surgical model are changed greatly along streamwise direction, so these variations can cause higher wall shear stress and flow disturbance compared to pre-surgical model. The recirculation flows observed in the protruding region result in the relatively large pressure drop. These results can be helpful to understand the flow variations after resection surgery of oral cancer.

The flow characteristics inside U-bend tube of the laminated plate heat exchanger were numerically investigated. The behavior of fluid flow, and the variations of the faulty area and friction factor are examined according to the distance between the span and the wall and the diameter of the round attacked to the end of span. The results show that the diameter(d) of the round attached to the span is mainly associated with the smooth circulation of fluid flow rather than the size of faulty area and the friction factor. As the distance($\ell$) between the span and the wall decreases, the faulty area decreases, however the friction factor dramatically increases. It is also found that one can obtain a good result in the view of the flow characteristics and pressure drop at d=7.5mm and $\ell$=30.5mm.
Computer simulation of the air flow over an automotive vehicle is now becoming a routine process in automotive industry to assess the aerodynamic characteristics of a medium-size vehicle such as $C_d\;and\;C_1$ and aslo to investigate the possibility of improving aerodynamic performance of the vehicle as a preliminary design for the production line. Mainly due to its contribution in saving time and cost in the development of new cars, computer simulation of the air flow over a vehicle is usually done well before a production car is introduced to the market and in gaining more and more attention as powerful computer resources are getting readily available nowadays. To aerodynamically design a car is mainly related with reducing a drag coefficient of car. A well designed car usually has a $C_d$ value in the range of $0.3{\sim}0.4$. It is understandable that automotive industry is rushing to reduce a drag coefficient as reducing even a small fraction of the $C_d$ value can have an enormous overall impact on many areas. Actually, the present research model was able to achieve a $C_d$ value in the range of $0.3{\sim}0.36$ for flow velocities of $60km/h{\sim}100km/h$ by strategically removing the possible factor hazardous to lower $C_d$ value. Prediction of the medium-size vehicle aerodynamics using CFD was performed when an actual car model was in the development stage and three-dimensional modeling was also performed to optimize it as the best model in terms of the best aerodynamic performance.

Fan noise prediction method is presented for air conditioning and/or cooling system applications where fan acts as an internal equipment having very complicated flow interaction with other various system components. The internal flow paths and distribution in the fan-applied systems such as computer or air conditioner are analyzed by using the FNM(Flow Network Modeling) with the flow resistances for flow elements of the system. Based on the fan operation point predicted from the FNM analysis results, the present fan noise model predicts overall sound power, pressure levels and spectrum. The predictions of the flow distribution, the fan operation and the noise level in electronic system by the present method are well agreed with 3-D CFD and actual noise test results.

This study has investigated the 3-D deflection characteristics of a flexible plate levitated by non-contact grippers using SPIV method. The measuring instrument consisted of a flexible plate located under four non-contact grippers and two cameras at the bottom of a transparent acrylic plate. Measurements were made on two materials (PVC and PC) for the plate with 50×50 cm2 area and 1 mm thickness. The deflection characteristics and flatness vary depending on the plate material, the gripper position and the air flow supplied to the gripper. For the material of PVC, the overall defection is convex. As the gripper position goes outward from the plate center, the upmost bending point also moves to the outside of the plate with the flatness increasing. However, the air flow rate does not affect the deflection pattern except for the small increase of flatness. For the material of PC, the shape of deflection changes from convex to concave as the gripper position goes out. The flatness is the highest at the point of transition from convex to concave, but the air flowrate has little effect on the flatness.
Air-water flow measurements are of importance for the coastal and ocean engineering fields. Although kinematic investigations of the multi-phase flows have been conducted for long time, velocity measurements still are concerned with many researchers and engineers in coastal and ocean areas. In the present study, an imaging technique using shadowgraphy and fiber optic probe for velocity measurements of air bubbles is introduced. The shadow graphy image technique is modified from the typical image velocimetry methods, and optical fibers are used for the well-known intrusive coupled phase-detection probe system. Since the imaging technique is a non-intrusive optical method from the air, it is usually applied for 2D flows. On the other hand, the double fiber optic probes touch flows regardless of flow patterns. The results of the flow measurements by both methods are compared and discussed. The methods are also applied to the measurements of overtopping flows by a breaking wave over the structure fixed on the free surface.

It is very important to clarify the 3-D angular flow characteristics of in-cylinder bulk motion in the developing process of variable induction system. In-cylinder flow induced by variable induction system is very complex, so we can not describe the in-cylinder bulk flow characteristics using the conventional swirl or tumble coefficient. In this study, we introduced the new 3-D angular flow index, angular flow coefficient($N_B$), for in-cylinder bulk flow characteristics. And also, to confirm the index, we carried out the steady flow rig test for intake port of test engine varying valve lift on the test matrix.

The present work presents condensation heat transfer and pressure drop data for the flow of R-12 in flat extruded aluminum tubes with small hydraulic diameters. The tube outside dimensions are $18mm(width){\times}1.7mm(height)$. Three types of internal geometry with the same outside dimensions are tested : sample 1 (7 tube holes), sample 2 (13 tube holes) and sample 3 (7 tube holes, micro-fin). The overall heat transfer coefficient is obtained for air-to-refrigerant heat transfer, and the Wilson plot method is used to determine the heat transfer coefficient for refrigerant flow. The sample 2 and sample 3 show significantly higher performance than sample 1. The heat transfer rates for the sample 2 and sample 3 are 9% and 12% higher, respectively, than sample 1. The friction factors for the sample 2 and sample 3 are 11.9% and 2.4% higher, respectively, than sample 1.

A numerical analysis on branch type sparger in drain tank for depressurization is performed to investigate the flow characteristics due to the change of design factor. As the result of this study, sparger\\`s flow resistance coefficient(K) is 3.53 at the present design condition when engineering margin for surface roughness is considered as 20%, and flow ratio into branch pipe ($Q_s/Q_i$) is 0.41. The correlation for calculating flow resistance coefficients as design factor is presented. Flow resistance coefficient is increased as section area ratio of branch pipe for main pipe and outlet nozzle diameter of main pipe decreasing, but the effects of branch angle and inlet flow rate of main pipe are small. As the change rate of ($Q_s/Q_i$)becomes larger, the change rate of flow resistance coefficient increases. The rate of pressure loss has the largest change as section area ratio changing. The condition of maximum flow resistance in sparger is when the outlet nozzle diameter ratio of main pipe ($D_e/D_i$) is 0.167, the section area ratio ($A_s/A_i$) is 0.1 and the branch angle ($\alpha$) is 55^{\circ}$.
