  • A reversed trapezoidal fin is analyzed using a two-dimensional analytical method. Heat loss from the reversed trapezoidal fin is presented as a function of the fin shape factor, fin base thickness and the fin base height. The relationship between the fin tip length and the convection characteristic number as well as that between the fin tip length and the fin base height for equal amounts of heat loss are analyzed. Also the relationship between the fin base thickness and the fin shape factor for equal amount of heat loss is presented. One of the results shows that the heat loss decreases linearly with the increase of the fin shape factor.

  • The dynamic response characteristics of Tension Leg Platforms(TLPs) in waves are examined for presenting the basic data for design of TLPs. The numerical approach is based on a combination of the three dimensional source distribution method and the dynamic response analysis method, in which the superstructure of TLP is assumed to be flexible instead of rigid. Restoring forces by hydrostatic pressure on the submerged surface of a TLP have been accurately calculated by excluding the assumption of the slender body theory. The hydrodynamic interactions among TLP members, such as columns and pontoons, and the structural damping are included in the motion and structural analysis. Numerical results are compared with the experimental ones, which are obtained in the literature, concerning the motion and tension responses of a TLP in waves. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach.

  • Mutagen X (MX) exists in our drinking water as the bi-products of chlorine disinfection. Being one of the most potent mutagen, it attracted much attention from many researchers. MX and its analogs are tested and modeled by quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR) methods. As a result, factors affecting this class of compounds have been found to be steric and electrostatic effects. We tried to collect all the data available from the literature. The quantitative structure-activity relationship of a set of 29 MX was analyzed using Molecular Field Analysis (MFA) and Receptor Surface Analysis (RSA). The best models gave $q^{2}=0.918,\;r^{2}=0.949$ for MFA and $q^{2}=0.893,\;r^{2}=0.954$ for RSA. The models indicate that an electronegative group at C6 position of the furanone ring increases mutagenicity.

  • In this paper, acceleration techniques for a three dimensional ray tracing method are presented. Ray tracing methods are widely adopted to obtain radio propagation channel models, however calculation times increase with the number of scatters such as buildings, hills and mountains. Various techniques are proposed in combination of ray tube concept.

  • The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.

  • In the persent study, we conducted numerical experiments using a three-dimensional baroclinic equation model and a Lagrangian method for clarifying the hydrodynamics in Osaka Bay under the yearly mean discharge and visualizing the behaviour of particles of different settling velocity discharged from Yodo River and sedimentation pattern on the sea bottom. Particles are transported from the Yodo River to the south direction by the residual circulation of the bay head at the first stage, and after most of suspended solids particles are settled down at any layer and returned in the south-east coastal area through bottom layers by an estuarine circulation. The results show that estuarine circulation plays an important part of suspended solids transportation in the Osaka Bay.

  • This paper presents the temporal classification method based on data mining techniques for discovering knowledge from measured load patterns of distribution transformers. Since the power load patterns have time-varying characteristics and very different patterns according to the hour, time, day and week and so on, it gives rise to the uninformative results if only traditional data mining is used. Therefore, we propose a temporal classification rule for analyzing and forecasting transformer load patterns. The main tasks include the load pattern mining framework and the calendar-based expression using temporal association rule and 3-dimensional cube mining to discover load patterns in multiple time granularities.

  • PURPOSES: This paper aims to give a guideline and the way to apply the advanced composite materials theory to the road structures with different cross sections to the practicing engineers. METHODS: To simple but exact method of calculating natural frequencies corresponding to the modes of vibration of road structures with different cross sections and arbitrary boundary conditions. The effect of the $D_{22}$ stiffness on the natural frequency is rigorously investigated. RESULTS: Simple method of vibration analysis for calculating the natural frequency of the different cross sections is presented. CONCLUSIONS: Simple method of vibration analysis for calculating the natural frequency of the different cross sections is presented. This method is a simple but exact method of calculating natural frequencies of the road structures with different cross sections. This method is extended to be applied to two dimensional problems including composite laminated road structures.

  • An iterative time marching procedure for solving incompressible internal flow has been applied to the flow around a rotor-stator. This procedure solves three-dimensional incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation on a moving, time-deforming, non-orthogonal body-fitted grid using second-order accurate schemes for the time derivatives and third/second-order accurate schemes for the spatial derivatives. To handle rotationg geometry, the multiblock technique is applied and the overall flow domain is subdivided into two blocks. In each block, a grid is generated and flowfield is solved independently of the other blocks. The boundary data for each block is provided by the neighboring blocks using bilinear interpolation technique.

  • Since the dismantling processes of building are very dangerous, there have been many studies to develop a remote operating devices using joystick. In this paper, in order to improve the operability of the dismantling actuator that is usually an excavator, a novel concept of tele-operated haptic device is proposed. Operators who use this haptic device with additional environmental sensing devices can work safely away from the dangerous sites. First, based on the concept design of the haptic device, the workspace mapping from the haptic device to the excavator is explored. Second, the kinematics which deals with the conversion from the 3 dimensional position information of the haptic device to the joint variable information of the backhoe is included. Lastly, 3D graphical simulation of both haptic device and the backhoe will be shown. This new design of the haptic device can be easily manufactured and gives the workers very convenient and transparent remote control capability.
