  • The binaural auditory system of human has ability to differentiate the direction and the distance of the sound sources by using the information which are inter-aural intensity difference(IID), inter-aural time difference(ITD) and/or the spectral shape difference(SSD). These information is generated from the acoustical transfer of a sound source to pinna, the outer ears. We can create a virtual sound system using the information which is called Head related transfer function(HRTF). However the performance of 3D sound is not always satisfactory because of non-individual characteristics of the HRTF. In this paper, we propose the algorithm that uses human's auditory characteristics for accurate perception. To achieve this, excitation energy of HRTF, global masking threshold and loudness are applied to the proposed algorithm. Informal listening test shows that the proposed method improves the sound localization characteristics much better than conventional methods.

  • As technologies using digital camera have been developed, 3D images can be constructed from the pictures captured by using multiple cameras. The 3D image data is represented in a form of point cloud which consists of 3D coordinate of the data and the related attributes. Various techniques have been proposed to construct the point cloud data. Among them, Structure-from-Motion (SfM) and Multi-view Stereo (MVS) are examples of the image-based technologies in this field. Based on the conventional research, the point cloud data generated from SfM and MVS may be sparse because the depth information may be incorrect and some data have been removed. In this paper, we propose an efficient algorithm to enhance the point cloud so that the density of the generated point cloud increases. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional algorithms objectively and subjectively.

  • The development of image technologies in such area as broadcasting and movies has recently increased our attention to 3D stereoscopic images. In addition, the development of stereoscopic image representation technologies in 3D contents becomes more active over time due to the representational limitations of 2D images. Without limitation to the above-mentioned area, stereoscopic image technologies have been developed and studied so that they can be widely accessed in diverse areas including medical services and education. Due to the refined production, however, required to represent a three dimensional effects and the fatigue caused by the perception of a three dimensional effects, the stereoscopic image technologies are not combined into real time systems such as games where environments change unforeseeably. In this study we design a technique to adjust the depth scaling that will enable efficient management of a three dimensional effects and to relieve fatigue through automatic view point interval adjustment in accordance with situations based on the geometrical structure of the DirectX SDK graphic pipeline. Through this, we would like to suggest a new alternative idea to activate the production of games combined with stereoscopic image technologies.

  • This paper deals with the accurate estimation of 3- D pose (position and orientation) of a moving object with reference to the world frame (or robot base frame), based on a sequence of stereo images taken by cameras mounted on the end - effector of a robot manipulator. This work is an extension of the previous work[1]. Emphasis is given to the 3-D pose estimation relative to the world (or robot base) frame under the presence of not only the measurement noise in 2 - D images[ 1] but also the camera position errors due to the random noise involved in joint angles of a robot manipulator. To this end, a new set of discrete linear Kalman filter equations is derived, based on the following: 1) the orientation error of the object frame due to measurement noise in 2 - D images is modeled with reference to the camera frame by analyzing the noise propagation through 3- D reconstruction; 2) an extended Jacobian matrix is formulated by combining the result of 1) and the orientation error of the end-effector frame due to joint angle errors through robot differential kinematics; and 3) the rotational motion of an object, which is nonlinear in nature, is linearized based on quaternions. Motion parameters are computed from the estimated quaternions based on the iterated least-squares method. Simulation results show the significant reduction of estimation errors and also demonstrate an accurate convergence of the actual motion parameters to the true values.

  • Recent development in virtual and augmented reality increases the demand for content in many different fields. One of the fast ways to create content for VR is 3D modeling of real objects. In this paper we propose a system to reconstruct three-dimensional models of real objects from the set of two-dimensional images under the assumption that the subject does not has distinct features. We explicitly consider an object that is made of one or more surfaces and radiant constant energy isotropically. We design a low cost portable multi camera rig system that is capable of capturing images simultaneously from all cameras. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, comparison is made between 3D model and a CAD model. A simple algorithm is also proposed to acquire original texture or color of the subject. Using best pattern found after the experiments, 3D model of the Pyeongchang Olympic Mascot "Soohorang" is created to use as VR content.

  • Recently, with the growth of mixed reality industrial infrastructure, relevant convergence research has been proposed. For real-time mixed reality services such as remote video conferencing, the research on real-time acquisition-process-transfer methods is required. This paper aims to implement an AR remote rendering method of volumetric 3D video data. We have proposed and implemented two modules; one, the parsing module of the volumetric 3D video to a game engine, and two, the server rendering module. The result of the experiment showed that the volumetric 3D video sequence data of about 15 MB was compressed by 6-7%. The remote module was streamed at 27 fps at a 1200 by 1200 resolution. The results of this paper are expected to be applied to an AR cloud service.

  • We present a method for generating 3D structures and rendering objects by combining VAE (Variational Autoencoder) and GAN (Generative Adversarial Network). This approach focuses on generating and rendering 3D models with improved quality using residual learning as the learning method for the encoder. We deep stack the encoder layers to accurately reflect the features of the image and apply residual blocks to solve the problems of deep layers to improve the encoder performance. This solves the problems of gradient vanishing and exploding, which are problems when constructing a deep neural network, and creates a 3D model of improved quality. To accurately extract image features, we construct deep layers of the encoder model and apply the residual function to learning to model with more detailed information. The generated model has more detailed voxels for more accurate representation, is rendered by adding materials and lighting, and is finally converted into a mesh model. 3D models have excellent visual quality and accuracy, making them useful in various fields such as virtual reality, game development, and metaverse.

  • Many of today's video systems have additional depth camera to provide extra features such as 3D support. Thanks to these changes made in multimedia system, it is now much easier to obtain depth information of the video. Depth information can be used in various areas such as object classification, background area recognition, and so on. With depth information, we can achieve even higher coding efficiency compared to only using conventional method. Thus, in this paper, we propose the 2D video coding algorithm which uses depth information on top of the next generation 2D video codec HEVC. Background area can be recognized with depth information and by performing HEVC with it, coding complexity can be reduced. If current CU is background area, we propose the following three methods, 1) Earlier stop split structure of CU with PU SKIP mode, 2) Limiting split structure of CU with CU information in temporal position, 3) Limiting the range of motion searching. We implement our proposal using HEVC HM 12.0 reference software. With these methods results shows that encoding complexity is reduced more than 40% with only 0.5% BD-Bitrate loss. Especially, in case of video acquired through the Kinect developed by Microsoft Corp., encoding complexity is reduced by max 53% without a loss of quality. So, it is expected that these techniques can apply real-time online communication, mobile or handheld video service and so on.

  • The computer generated hologram (CGH) method is the technology which can generate a hologram by using only a personal computer (PC) commonly used. However, the CGH method requires a huge amount of calculational time for the 3D object with a super multi-light source or a high-definition hologram. Hence, some solutions are obviously necessary for reducing the computational complexity of a CGH algorithm or increasing the computing performance of hardware. In this paper, we propose a method which can generate a digital hologram of the 3D object with a super multi-light source using parallel distributed computing. The traditional methods has the limitation of improving CGH performance by using a single PC. However, the proposed method where a server PC efficiently uses the computing power of client PCs can quickly calculate the CGH method for 3D object with super multi-light source. In the experimental result, we verified that the proposed method can generate the digital hologram with 1,5361,536 resolution size of 3D object with 157,771 light source in 121 ms. In addition, in the proposed method, we verify that the proposed method can reduce generation time of a digital hologram in proportion to the number of client PCs.
