Elastic Wave Properties of STS316L with Different Rolling Temperature (가공 온도가 다른 STS316L의 탄성파 특성)

  • In this study, austenitic 316L stainless steel was rolled at three different temperatures (100℃, -50℃, -196℃) at five rolling degree (0, 16, 33, 50, 66 and 80%). The rolled specimen was examined for micro structure, and the volume fraction and mechanical properties were evaluated. In particular, the rolling specimen detected the elastic wave generated in tensile and investigated the relationship between the rolling degree and the dominant frequency. As the rolling degree increased, austenite decreased and martensite increased. The volume fraction of martensite more increased at lower temperatures, but increased rapidly at the rolling degree of 50% of all rolling temperature. Tensile strength increased rapidly with the increase of the rolling degree, and was larger at lower temperatures. The elongation decreased sharply to the rolling degree of 33%, but decreased gently thereafter. The dominant frequency highly appeared as the volume fraction of martensite increased, but the dominant frequency was higher at the low temperature rolling temperature. A similar trend was also observed in the relationship between tensile strength and dominant frequency.

Role of residual ferrites on crevice SCC of austenitic stainless steels in PWR water with high-dissolved oxygen

  • The crevice stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of austenitic stainless steels was evaluated in simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) environments. To simulate the abnormal condition in temporary clamping devices on leaking small bore pipes, crevice bent beam (CBB) tests were performed in the oxygenated as well as hydrogenated conditions. No SCC cracks were found for SS316 in both conditions. SS304 also showed good resistance in the hydrogenated condition. However, all SS304 specimens showed SCC cracks in the oxygenated condition, indicating poor crevice SCC resistance. It was found that residual ferrites were selectively dissolved because of the galvanic corrosion coupled with the neigh-bouring austenite phase, resulting in SCC initiation in SS304. Crack morphologies were mostly transgranular assisted by the damaged δ-ferrite and deformation-induced slip bands.

Effect of Delayed Oxygen Evolution in Anodic Polarization on the Passive Film Characteristic and Localized Corrosion Resistance of Titanium Alloys (타이타늄 합금에서 산소발생전위 지연이 부동태 피막 특성과 국부부식 저항성에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to investigate delayed oxygen evolution and localized corrosion resistance of titanium alloys by performing potentiodynamic polarization, potentiostatic polarization, and Mott-Schottky measurements. Delayed oxygen evolution was compared among titanium alloys, 316 stainless steel, and platinum. Difference in delayed oxygen evolution between titanium alloys and other metals was attributed to specific surface characteristic of each metal. Delayed oxygen evolution of titanium alloys resulted from the predominant process of ionic conduction over electronic conduction. The effect of oxygen evolution on localized corrosion of titanium alloys was investigated using electrochemical critical localized corrosion temperature (E-CLCT) technique. Mott-Schottky measurement was performed to clarify the difference in film properties between titanium alloys and stainless steels. Titanium alloys were found to have much lower donor density than stainless steels by 1/28. These results indicate that delayed oxygen evolution has little influence on the concreteness of passive film and the resistance to localized corrosion of titanium alloys.

  • Environmental fatigue of the metallic components in light water reactors has been the subject of extensive research and regulatory interest in Korea and abroad. Especially, it was one of the key domestic issues for the license renewal of operating reactors and licensing of advanced reactors during the early 2000s. To deal with the environmental fatigue issue domestically, a systematic test program has been initiated and is still underway. The materials tested were SA508 Gr.1a low alloy steels, 316LN stainless steels, cast stainless steels, and an Alloy 690 and 52M weld. Through tests and subsequent analysis, the mechanisms of reduced low cycle fatigue life have been investigated for those alloys. In addition, the effects of temperature, dissolved oxygen level, and dissolved hydrogen level on low cycle fatigue behaviors have been investigated. In this paper, the test results and key analysis results are briefly summarized. Finally, an on-going test program for hot-bending of 347 stainless steel is introduced.

A Study on Protection of Stainless Steel Substrate against Corrosion in Molten Carbonate by Formation of Aluminum Diffusive Layer Using a Slurry Coating Method (슬러리 코팅법에 의한 스테인레스 스틸 표면에서의 알루미늄 확산막 제조 및 용융탄산염 내에서의 내식 특성 연구)

  • A stainless steel separator for a molten carbonate fuel cell is usually coated with aluminum diffusive layer to protect its surface against corrosion by the molten carbonate at high temperatures. In this study, a relatively simple method was devised to form the aluminum diffusive layer on a stainless steel substrate. Slurry coating of aluminum on the substrate followed by heat treatment under reducing atmosphere at $650\~800^{\circ}C$ produced the aluminum diffusive layer of $25\~80{\mu}m$ thickness. The thickness of aluminum diffusive layer increased with increasing the temperature or duration of the heat-treatment. The corrosion resistance against molten carbonate under oxidizing atmosphere was significantly improved by aluminum diffusive layer formed by the sluny painting and heat treatment method. Moreover, the sample prepared in this study showed corrosion behavior similar to the sample with aluminum diffusive layer prepared by ion vapor deposition and heat treatment.

Study on Microstructures and Hardness of STS316L Fabricated by Selective Laser Melting (선택적 레이저 용융공정을 이용한 316L 스테인리스강 분말 3차원 조형체의 미세조직 및 경도 연구)

  • In this study, STS316L powders prepared by gas atomization are used to manufacture bulk structures with dimensions of $10{\times}10{\times}10mm^3$ using selective laser melting (SLM). The microstructures and hardness of the fabricated 316L stainless steel has been investigated with the laser beam overlap varied from 10% to 70%. The microstructures of the fabricated STS316L samples show a decrease in the balling and satellite of powders introducing defect in the bulk samples and the porosity caused by the gap between the molten metal pools disappearing as the overlap ratio increases, whereas a low overlap ratio results in significant balling and a large amount of isolated powders due to the increased gap between the melt pools. Furthermore, the highest value in Vickers hardness is obtained for the sample fabricated by 30% overlapped laser beams. These results show that the overlap ratio of laser beams in the SLM process should be considered as an important process parameter.

A Study on the Burning Damage of a Driving Motor for Warship Fire Pump (함정용 소화펌프 구동 모터의 소손현상 개선에 관한 연구)

  • An improvement of driving motor burning damages on a couplingless type warship fire pump is studied. The pump consists of an induction motor a pump-motor shaft and a volute type impeller. The burning damage had occured by changing the material of the pump-motor shaft from carbon steel(SM 45C) to stainless steel(STS 316) for improving anti-corrision properity in sea water. It is shown that a material change on the pump-motor shaft can reduce the efficiency of driving motor and may cause motor burning in the process of pump development stage. This kind of motor burning problem can be solved by increasing the efficiency of the motor and changing the geometry of the inner parts.

Optimal Welding Condition of Dissimilar Friction Welded Materials and Its Real Time Evaluation by Acoustic Emission (이종마찰용접재의 최적용접조건과 음향방출에 의한 실시간 품질평가)

  • In this paper, dissimilar friction welding were produced using 15 mm diameter solid bar in chrome molybedenum steel(SCM440) to stainless steel(STS316L) to investigate their mechanical properties. Consequently, optimal welding conditions were n=2000 rpm, HP=70 MPa, UP=140 MPa, HT=10 sec and UT=10 sec when the metal loss(Mo) is 8.6 mm. In addition, an acoustic emission technique was applied to evaluate the optimal friction welding condition. AE parameters including the cumulative count, amplitude and energy showed a various changes according to the friction condition. A continuous type waveforms and low frequency spectrum was presented in friction time. On the other hand, a burst type waveform and high frequency spectrum was exhibited in pressing time.

Tensile and impact toughness properties of various regions of dissimilar joints of nuclear grade steels

  • Modified 9Cr-1Mo ferritic steel is a preferred material for steam generators in nuclear power plants for their creep strength and good corrosion resistance. Austenitic stainless steels, such as type 316LN, are used in the high temperature segments such as reactor pressure vessels and primary piping systems. So, the dissimilar joints between these materials are inevitable. In this investigation, dissimilar joints were fabricated by the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) process with Inconel 82/182 filler metals. The notch tensile properties and Charpy V-notch impact toughness properties of various regions of dissimilar metal weld joints (DMWJs) were evaluated as per the standards. The microhardness distribution across the DMWJs was recorded. Microstructural features of different regions were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Inhomogeneous notch tensile properties were observed across the DMWJs. Impact toughness values of various regions of the DMWJs were slightly higher than the prescribed value. Formation of a carbon-enriched hard zone at the interface between the ferritic steel and the buttering material enhanced the notch tensile properties of the heat-affected-zone (HAZ) of P91. The complex microstructure developed at the interfaces of the DMWJs was the reason for inhomogeneous mechanical properties.

High Heat Flux Test of Cu/SS Mock-up for ITER First Wall (ITER 일차벽의 Cu/SS Mock-up에 대한 고열부하 시험)

  • In order to verify the integrity of the first wall (FW) of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), the fabricated Cu/SS mock-up is tested in the JAEA Electron Beam Irradiation Test Stand (JEBIS). To fabricate the Cu/SS mock-up, CuCrZr and 316L authentic stainless steel (SS316L) are used for Cu alloy and steel, respectively The hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is used as a manufacturing method with a $1050^{\circ}C$ and 150 MPa. The high heat flux (HHF) test is performed using an electron beam with a heat flux of $5MW/m^2$ and a cycle of 15-sec on time and 30-sec off time. The temperature measurement in the HHF test shows good agreement with the results obtained from ANSYS code analysis, which is used for determining the HHF test conditions.
