  • An ${\alpha}$-Ferrite (Fe) powder dispersed with 4 vol.% of $Al_2O_3$ was successfully produced by a simple miling at 210 K with a mixture of $Fe_2O_3$, Fe and Al ingredient powders, followed by 2 step high temperature consolidation: Hot Pressing (HP) at 1323 K and then Hot Isostatic Pressing at 1423 K. The microstructure of the consolidated material was characterized by standard metallographic techniques such as XRD (X-ray Diffraction), TEM and STEM-EDS. The results of STEM-EDS analysis showed that the HIPed materials comprised a mixture of pure Fe matrix with a grain size of ~20 nm and $Al_2O_3$ with a bimodal size distribution of extremely fine (~5 nm) and medium size dispersoids (~20 nm). The mechanical properties of the consolidated materials were characterized by compressive test and micro Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The results showed that the yield strength of the ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) Fe alloy are as much as $674{\pm}39$ MPa and the improvement of the yield strength is attributed to the presence of the fine $Al_2O_3$ dispersoid.

  • Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening found in $L1_2$ ordered ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Ni_3(Al,Ti)$ alloys using transmission electron microscopy. A uniform solid solution of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-L1_2$ ordered phase supersaturated with Ni can be obtained by solution annealing in a suitable temperature range. The ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ phase hardens appreciably by the fine precipitation of disordered ${\gamma}$. The shape of ${\gamma}$ precipitates formed during aging is initially spherical or round-cubic and grow into platelets as aging proceeds. High resolution electron microscopy revealed that the ${\gamma}$ precipitates are perfectly coherent with the matrix ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ as long as the ${\gamma}$-precipitates are plates. The loss of coherency initiates by the introduction of dislocations at the ${\gamma}/{\gamma}^{\prime}$ interface followed by the step formation at the dislocations. The ${\gamma}$ precipitates become globular after the loss of coherency. The strength of ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Ni_3(Al,Ti)$ increases over the temperature range of experiment by the precipitation of fine ${\gamma}$ particles. The peak temperature where a maximum strength was obtained shifted to higher temperature.

  • Since the reverse shape memory effect(RSME) was reported in a CuZnAl alloy, further study has been done on the mechanism of this phenomenon and reported that it occurs by the bainitic transformation. But the present authors revealed in the previous work that the RSME in a B2 CuZnAl alloy is not caused by the shear process involved in the bainitic transformation and also that the RSME takes place as the remaining ${\alpha}^{\prime}{_2}$ phase, which is two-step transformed strain induced martensite, is newly transformed into ${\alpha}$ phase. In order to provide further evidence in supporting the facts, thus, more detailed investigations have been carried out in a $DO_3$ CuZnAl alloy.

  • The surface roughness of the inner and outer surfaces of a tube is an important requirement for nuclear fuel cladding. When an inner SiC clad tube, which is considered as an advanced Pressurized Water Cooled Reactor (PWR) clad with a three-layered structure, is fabricated by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), the surface roughness of the substrate, graphite, is an important process parameter. The surface character of the graphite substrate could directly affect the roughness of the inner surface of SiC deposits, which is in contact with a substrate. To evaluate the effects of the surface roughness changes of a substrate, SiC deposits were fabricated using different types of graphite substrates prepared by the following four polishing paths and heat-treatment for purification: (1) polishing with #220 abrasive paper (PP) without heat treatment (HT), (2) polishing with #220 PP with HT, (3) #2400 PP without HT, (4) polishing with #2400 PP with HT. The average surface roughnesses (Ra) of each deposited SiC layer are 4.273, 6.599, 3.069, and $6.401{\mu}m$, respectively. In the low pressure SiC CVD process with a graphite substrate, the removal of graphite particles on the graphite surface during the purification and the temperature increasing process for CVD seemed to affect the surface roughness of SiC deposits. For the lower surface roughness of the as-deposited interlayer of SiC on the graphite substrate, the fine controlled processing with the completed removal of rough scratches and cleaning at each polishing and heat treating step was important.

  • Fresh vegetable juice is a non-heat treated product and the only step to reduce microbial growth is washing. Therefore, the materials for fresh vegetable juice including Angelica keiskei, Brassica loeracea var. acephala, and Daucus carota L. were treated by ozone after the first washing process and investigated for microbial and chemical changes. The number of the total aerobic bacteria in materials after selection step were $8.2{\times}10^5{\sim}5.0{\times}10^6\;CFU/g$, which was a higher contamination level than the limit of Korea food code ($10^5\;CFU/g$). However, after the 1st washing process and ozone treatment, the total aerobic bacterial number was reduced to $4.7{\times}10^4{\sim}6.7{\times}10^4\;CFU/g$, which showed 2 log microbial reduction. After the 2nd washing step followed by ozone treatment, there was no difference in microbial number. The number of colifroms in the materials of fresh vegetable juice were $8.0{\times}10^3{\sim}3.5{\times}10^3\;CFU/g$ initially but showed $1.5{\times}10^2{\sim}3.0{\times}10^2\;CFU/g$ after the ozone treatment (1 log reduction). On the other hand, there was no changes in the contents of ascorbic acid, flavonoids, polyphenols, minerals (cadmium and lead) during all processes. In addition, no color changes were observed during washing process. Therefore, ozone treatment in the materials of fresh vegetable juice decreased the microbial numbers. Also, chemical characteristics of ozone treated sample were not different when compared with control.

  • The effect of bonding misfit on single crystallization of transient liquid phase (TLP) bonded joints of single crystal superalloy CMSX-2 was investigated using MBF-80 insert metal. The bonding misfit was defined by (100) twist angle (rotating angle) at bonded interface. TLP bonding of specimens was carried out at 1523K for 1.8ks in vacuum. The post-bond heat treatment consisted of the solution and sequential two step aging treatment was conducted in the Ar atmosphere. The crystallographic orientation analysis across the TLP bonded joints was conducted three dimensionally using the electron back scattering pattern (EBSP) method. EBSP analyses f3r the bonded and post bonded heat treated specimens were conducted. All bonded joints had misorientation centering around the bonded interface for as-bonded and post-bond heat treated specimens with rotating angle. The average misorientation angle between both solid phases in bonded interlayer was almost identical to the rotating angle at bonded interface. HRTEM observation revealed that the atom arrangement of both solid phases in bonded interlayer was quite different across the bonded interface. It followed that grain boundary was formed in bonded interface. It was confirmed that epitaxial growth of the solid phase occurred from the base metal substrates during TLP bonding and single crystallization could not be achieved in joints with rotating angle.

  • The microwave cooking of rice was studied for the purpose of establishing optimum conditions of power level and heating time. Optimum volume of adding water was 290 ml per 173 g rice. The longer the rice was soaked, the better the cooked rice. However, we chose one hour as soaking time so that we might observe well the effects of power levels. The mode of microwave cooking consisted of 5 steps of power level; step 1: temperature ascendance, step 2: water absorption 1, step 3: water absorption 2, step 4: heat penetration, step 5: gelatinization completion. The quality of cooked rice was evaluated subjectively. As a result of the study, 3 optimum conditions were chosen as follows. 1) (7) 5:00-(1) 5:00-(2) 5:00-(2) 6:00-(7) 4:00, 2) (8) 4:25-(1) 5:00-(2) 5:00-(2) 5:00-(6) 4:00,3) (9) 3:40-(1) 5:00-(2) 5:00-(3) 6:00-(7) 2:00

  • Aluminum can to can recycling was divided into two stpes. The first step was composed of the processes such as collection of used beverage cans (UBC), shredding, magnetic separation, De-laquiring, melting and casting. The second one was remelting and casting, heat treating, hot and cold rolling, annealing, and can making. In this study, the effect of alloying elements on the microstructure and texture of the secondary ingots made by Al UBC was investigated. In aluminum can to can recycling, the second phase particles appeared in the solidification stage must be controlled by heat treatment. The optimum heat treatment condition was $615^{\circ}C$ for 5hrs. the texture in hot rolled sheet was depressed with increasing Mn content, on the other hand, Si and Fe elements promoted the texture development. The textures of can-body sheet should be controlled in the hot rolling and annealing stage because can was formed from cold rolled sheet without heat treatment.

  • Graphite and carbonaceous materials intercalate and deintercalate Li-ion reversibly into their layered structures. These materials show an excellent capacity for using a negative electrode in Li-ion batteries, because the electrochemical potential of Li-ion intercalated carbon is almost identical with that of lithium metal. Carbon used in this study was obtained by the pyrolysis of petroleum pitch, and heat-treated at the several temperatures between $700^{\circ}C$ and $1300^{\circ}C$. XRD analysis revealed that crystallization of carbon increased with increasing the heat treatment temperature. Charge/discharge properties were studied by a constant-current step at the rate of 0.1C, and the interfacial reaction between the electrolyte and the surface of carbon electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry. Cell capacities were investigated in terms of the heat treatment temperature and the cycle number. Reversible capacity increased with the heat treatment temperature up to $1000^{\circ}C$, thereafter decreased continuously. Also, charge capacity decreased with the cycle number, while the reversibility improved with it.

  • To investigate the factors influencing the artifical transformation in Escherichia coli, E. coli C600 was transformed by pBR322 DNA with tetracycline and ampicillin resistant gene purified by CsCl-Etbr equilibrium density gradient centrifugation from E.coli HB 101. The influencing factors in the transformation such as concentration of calcium chloride, time of ice incubation, temperature and time of heat shock, time of gene expression, effects of plasmid DNA concentration and adding time were examined in these experiments. The results obtained were as follows; 1. The highest transformation frequency was observed in the treatments of 100 mM $CaCl_2$ before heat shock and the treatment of $CaCl_2$ was essential step in the process of E. coli transformation. 2. The highest transformation frequency was observed in the treatment of heat shock at $42^{\circ}C$ for 4 min. or $37^{\circ}C$ for 6 min., but the prolonged heat shock resulted a decreased transformation frequency. 3. Treatments of ice incubation at $0^{\circ}C$ for 45 min. before heat stocks or at $0^{\circ}C$ for 30min. after heat shock resulted an increased transformation frequency. 4. There was a linear relationship between DNA concentration and transformation frequency at the concentration of $8{\times}10^3$ recipient cells. The highest transformation frequency reached in carte of 7 mcg of donor DNA, but above 1 mcg of DNA concentration, transformation frequency was not remarkably increased. Addition of donor DNA just after the treatment of $CaCl_2$ was the best. 5. The best condition of gene expression at $37^{\circ}C$ were 40min. for TC-resistant gene and 100min. for AP-resistant gene. TC-resistant gene was higher in the transformation frequency and faster in the gene expression time than AP-resistant gene. In these results, the best conditions for the transformation of E. coli C 600 with pBR322 DNA were: treatment with 100mM $CaCl_2$, ice incubation at $0^{\circ}C$ for 45 min, heat shock at $42^{\circ}C$ for 4 min., 30 min. of ice incubation and incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ for 100min. for gene expression in that order.
