  • Purpose: Current gas-mask is very uncomfortable structure for spectacles wearer. Improving this problem can aid military men and firemen to protect themselves and rescue other person. Methods: we changed the structure from dual type of outward lens and inward lens into a single type structure. we attached acrylic frame to gas-mask instead of outward lens and protected the gas inflow by shutting the gab of lens and frame using silicon shield, and made the frame "S" style for removing astigmatism and maintaining of vertex distance. Results: It was possible to correct visual acuity and gas shield, and could changed the lens like a common spectacles. The new type of gas-mask spectacles could remove 0.53D~1.78D astigmatism occurred from the slant of eyesight and lens surface, 0.07D~0.66D overcorrection occurred from short vertex distance, and 0.1D~0.3D astigmatism occurred from pantoscopic angle. Conclusion: Because new type of gas-mask spectacles had clear visual field, it was expected to improve fighting power and rescue ability.

  • In this paper, the novel approach for image contrast enhancement is introduced. The method is based on the unsharp mask and directional information of images. Since the unsharp mask techniques give better visual quality than the conventional sharpening mask, there are much works on image enhancement using unsharp masks. The proposed algorithm decomposes the image to several blocks and extracts directional information using DCT. From the geometric properties of the block, each block is labeled as appropriate type and processed by adaptive unsharp mask. The masking process is skipped at the flat area to reduce the noise artifact, but at the texture and edge area, the adaptive unsharp mask is applied to enhance the image contrast based on the edge direction. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm produces the contrast enhanced images with superior visual quality, suppressing the noise effects and enhancing edge at the same time.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the inhalation resistance(IR) and fiber structure of disposable masks when exposed to repeated heating and ultraviolet(UV) sterilization. The experiments consisted of a lab-scale and a field test. For the lab-scale test, KF94 and N95 masks were selected and a trial was composed of three repetitions of an 80-min sterilization. For the field test, a subject participated over four days, of which a KF94 was worn without sterilization, and the same trial was conducted during the next four days with daily sterilization. The results showed that the IR of the KF94 mask(9.5 Pa) gradually increased according to the sterilization up to the second repetition(15.6 Pa) but decreased at the third treatment(9.7 Pa). However, the N95 mask did not showany tendency of IR during the repetitions. Microscope photos showed several warped or blackened fibers in the stiffener layer after the repeated sterilization. After wearing a KF94 mask for four consecutive days, its IR decreased until the three days but increased the fourth day, whereas another KF94 mask with sterilization showed an increase in IR for the four days. In the microscope-photos after the consecutive four days, outside fibers and stiffener layers were warped or became less dense. In summary, the IR of the KF94 mask slightly increased through the three~four rounds of heating and UV sterilizations, but the fiber structures were not significantly deformed by the repeated sterilization. To reduce discarded mask waste, the repeated sterilization of masks can be recommended.

  • Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected the world seriously. Every person is required for wearing a mask properly in a public area to prevent spreading the virus. However, many people are not wearing a mask properly. In this paper, we propose an efficient mask detection system. In our proposed system, we first detect the faces of input images using YOLOv5 and classify them as the one of three scene complexity classes (Simple, Moderate, and Complex) based on the number of detected faces. After that, the image is fed into the Faster-RCNN with the one of three ResNet (ResNet-18, 50, and 101) as backbone network depending on the scene complexity for detecting the face area and identifying whether the person is wearing the mask properly or not. We evaluated our proposed system using public mask detection datasets. The results show that our proposed system outperforms other models.

  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the normalization of mask-wearing worldwide, and young children are particularly vulnerable to respiratory diseases. Children's masks come in various sizes and shapes, causing confusion among consumers who struggle to find products that can accommodate their child's unique physical conditions. This research aims to analyze the shape and dimensions of health masks designed for young children. A total of 67 mask varieties were collected, and 58 were subjected to analysis. The masks were found to have two primary shapes: foldable and beak-like, with sizes categorized as small and extra-small. The majority of masks were manufactured in Korea, and the size labeling systems varied among manufacturers. The mask materials were non-woven fabric or polypropylene, and there was diversity in terms of the adjustable earbands and the use of additional accessories. The dimensions of the masks varied depending on their shape, with significant differences in the weight and the length of the wire holes. Subsequent research should focus on conducting wearability evaluations to verify the dimensional suitability of commercially available children's health masks based on shape and size. Additionally, this study aims to provide foundational data that can assist in the development of children's masks with size ranges that differentiate them from adult masks and cater to specific age groups.

  • When it is necessary to wear masks for long periods, such as during the current COVID-19 pandemic, the essential function of masks to prevent contamination (or transmission to others) as well as comfortableness are important. For this study, we used three-dimensional (3D) facial measurements of adult women to compile basic face shape data for designing comfortable and effective masks. This study analyzed the 3D facial data of 127 subjects in their 20s to 30s of the 6th Size Korea. Factor analysis of the survey data produced seven factors that formed the composition of adult female faces. These factors combined to produce three facial types: square (long face and a large lower middle face), oval (smallest central and lower body in the middle), and triangle (short face with a small central and lower large nose). These types reflect that the facial types of adult women show the differences in the nose angle, nose length, bitragion-subnasal arc, bitragion-menton arc. Therefore, properly fitting masks for fine dust particle filtration require 3D customization of a mask's breathing apparatus to fit differently shaped central and lower face parts that interfere with mask fit.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, the obligatory wearing of masks has led to increased consumer demand and the diversification of mask design. Accordingly, it is necessary to understand the inner meaning and characteristics of masks in the pandemic situation. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to analyze the characteristics of fashionable masks and their new cultural meaning under the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is based on literature review and empirical research. Drawing on an investigation of the historical evolution of masks and their transition under the pandemic (exhibiting differences in mask culture among countries and regions), this study analyzed 54 distinctive fashion masks designed by fashion brands and influencers that appeared from January 2020 to January 2021. The characteristics of fashion masks identified under the influence of the pandemic are as follows: Message delivery on political issues and human rights; psychological defense and expression of individuality; and conspicuous display via luxurious materials and luxury brand logos; moreover, the design of the mask uses the same material, color, pattern, decoration, and other methods as clothing to achieve the overall style. Over the course of the pandemic (and even in post-pandemic lifestyle), fashion masks are becoming more diversified conveying new social and cultural meanings.

  • Femtosecond laser ablation of the Invar alloy and hole drilling for a shadow mask are studied. We used a regenerative amplified Ti-sapphire laser with a 1kHz repetition rate, 184fs pulse duration and 785nm wavelength. Femtosecond laser pulse was irradiated on the Invar alloy with air blowing at the condition of various laser peak power. An ablation characteristic of the Invar alloy was appeared non-linear at $125J/cm^2$ of energy fluence. For the application to a shadow mask, the hole drilling of the Invar alloy with the cross section of a trapezoidal shape was investigated. The ablated micro-holes were characterized using an atomic force microscopy(AFM). The optimal condition of hole pattern f3r a shadow mask was $4\;{\mu}m$ z-axis feed rate, 0.2mm/s circular velocity, $26.4{\mu}J$ laser peak power. With the optimal processing condition, the fine circular hole shape without burr and thermal damage was achieved. Using the femtoseocond laser system, it demonstrates excellent tool for the Invar alloy micro-hole drilling without heat effects and poor edge.
