  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sediment produce by landslide triggered by rainfall. One-dimensional unsaturated groundwater model and infinite slope stability analysis were used to estimate the behavior of soil moisture and slope stability according to rainfall, respectively. Slope stability analysis was performed considering on soil depth and characteristics of trees. The results of the analysis on characteristics of sediment produce according to rainfall events showed that the sediment produce by landslide was mainly contributed to rainfall intensity and its temporal clustering. The results of the analysis on characteristics of sediment produce by extreme events showed that remaining rainfall amount of typhoon 'Rusa' was much more than that of the other extreme events, and thus this remaining rainfall was to contribute to sediment transportation. Additionally, only a small number of extreme events were found to cause most amount of sediment produce in a basin.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the hydraulic behavior in a stream reach using SMS RMA-2 model with a series of dynamic boundary conditions of main stream and lateral flows simulated by WMS HEC-1 program. For the stream reach (10.5 km) between Gongdo and Pyeongtaek water level gauge stations of Anseongcheon, the model simulated two dimensional flow characteristics by applying dynamic flow conditions of rainfall frequencies of 50, 100, 500, and 1,000 years for the main stream and three tributaries. The temporal flow behavior successfully simulated and the results showed that the distribution of mean velocity and water level within the stream reach increased according to the increase of flow frequency. Especially, the flow velocity sensibly increased at the near downstream of lateral inflow as the width of main stream is narrower.

  • An experimental investigation on the structure and dynamic behavior of two dimensional over-expanded air jets exiting into water was carried out. The hish speed digital video imaging and static pressure distribution measurement were made to characterize the structure and time-dependant behavior of the jets. Mach number at the jet exit was 2.0 and was slightly less than the value predicted by the ideal nozzle calculation. Variance of jet spreading angle at different stagnation condition was measured as a function of mass flow rate. Periodic nature of the air jet distortion in water was observed and the frequency of the repetition was approximately 5-6 Hz for all cases tested. Three characteristic length scales were defined to characterize jet structure. $L_1$, maximum width of the plume when the periodic instability occurs, $L_2$, width of the jet where secondary reverse flow entrained jet flow and $L_3$, distance from the jet exit to the location where entrainment of the secondary reverse flow occurs. The ratio of $L_1$ and $L_2$ decreased with increasing stagnation pressure, i.e. mass flow rate. $L_3$ increased with increasing stagnation pressure. The temporal behavior of static pressure measurements also showed peak around frequency of 5, which corresponds the frequency obtained by visual measurements

  • The changes of electroencephalogram(EEG) in patients with dementia are most commonly studied by analyzing power or magnitude in certain traditionally defined frequency bands. However because of the absence of an identified metric which quantifies the complex amount of information, there are many limitations in using such a linear method. According to chaos theory, irregular signals of EEG can also result from low dimensional deterministic chaos. Chaotic nonlinear dynamics in the EEG can be studied by calculating the correlation dimension. The authors have analyzed EEG epochs from three patients with dementia of Alzheimer type and three matched control subjects. The multichannel correlation dimension is calculated from EEG epochs consisting of 15 channels with 16,384 data points per channel. The results showed that patients with dementia of Alzheimer type had significantly lower correlation dimension than non-demented controls on 12 channels. Topographic analysis showed that the correlation dimensions were significantly lower in patients with Alzheimer's disease on frontal, temporal, central, and occipital head regions. These results show that brains of patients with dementia of Alzheimer type have a decreased complexity of electrophysiological behavior. We conclude that the nonlinear analysis such as calculating correlation dimension can be a promising tool for detecting relative changes in the complexity of brain dynamics.

However because of the absence of an identified metric which quantifies the complex amount of information, there are many limitations in using such a linear method. According to the chaos theory, irregular signals of EEG can be also resulted from low dimensional deterministic chaos. Chaotic nonlinear dynamics in the EEG can be studied by calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent($L_1$). The authors have analyzed EEG epochs from three patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type and three matched control subjects. The largest $L_1$ is calculated from EEG epochs consisting of 16,384 data points per channel in 15 channels. The results showed that patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type had significantly lower $L_1$ than non-demented controls on 8 channels. Topographic analysis showed that the $L_1$ were significantly lower in patients with Alzheimer's disease on all the frontal, temporal, central, and occipital head regions. These results show that brains of patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type have a decreased chaotic quality of electrophysiological behavior. We conclude that the nonlinear analysis such as calculating the $L_1$ can be a promising tool for detecting relative changes in the complexity of brain dynamics.
