This paper suggests the three dimensional steady state searching techniques of hard disk/head system, which has some skew angle with flexure. In order to analyze the steady state behaviors of magnetic head slider, the localized Knudsen number and the localized bearing numbers are sued. For finding the steady state of magnetic head slider under the pre-loaded condition, I proposed multi-dimensional Newton-Raphson method which traces the equilibrium position of magnetic head slider, which has 3-degrees of freedom, using Jacobian matrix. The multi-dimensional Newton-Raphson method is very efficient technique for finding the steady state position of magnetic head slider because it approaches to the equilibrium position with changing three parameters simultaneously.

Because most fatigue cracks in wheel and rail take place by rolling contact of wheel and rail in railroad industry, it is critical to understand the rolling contact phenomena, especially for the three-dimensional situation. This paper presents an approach to steady-state rolling contact problem of three-dimensional contact bodies, with or without tangential force, based on the finite element method. The steady-state conditions are controlled by the applied relative slip and tangential force. The three-dimensional distribution of tangential traction and contact stresses on the contact surface are investigated. Results show that the distribution of tangential traction and contact stresses on the contact surface varies rapidly as a result of the variation of stick-slip region. The tangential traction is very close in form to Carter's distribution.

This study presents steady-state finite element analysis of three-dimensional hot extrusion of sections through square dies. The objective of this study is to develop a steady-state finite element method for hot extrusion through square dies, and to provide theoretical basis for the optimal die design and process control in the extrusion technology. In the present work, steady-state assumption is applied to both analyses of deformation and temperature. The analysis of temperature distribution includes heat transfer. Convection like element is adopted for the heat transfer analysis between billet and container, and also billet and die. Distributions of temperature, effective strain rate, velocity and mean stress are discussed to design extrusion die effectively.
Heat loss from windows and condensation occuring on its surface due to its lower insulation value causes much discomfort to occupants. In this study, Heated glass was used to make a basic study on prevention of condensation on glass surface for its heating functionality through experimental measurement and simulation analysis of total heat flux on the interior and exterior surface of glass. Error between experimental results and three dimensional steady-state heat transfer analysis were caused firstly, beacuse in the experimental chambers, cold chamber and steady temperature and humidity chamber, air temperature setting was not constant but rather ON/OFF control, and secondly, due to error rate in heat flux meter due to heat flux direction even in stable conditions.

A numerical simulation technique of three-dimensional finite difference model is developed to study the groundwater flow system in Dcjima, an upland area which faces Kasumigaura Lake. For general perspectives of the groundwater flow system, a steady state three-dimentional model is simulated. For the sedimentary mud formations which are found in the representative formation, three situations of hydraulic conductivity are considered, representing an isotropic condition and situations where the horizontal permeability is equal to 10 times and 100times of the vertical one. The finite difference grid used in the simulation has 60x50x30=90,000 nodes. A converged solution with a tolerance of 0.001 meter of hydraulic head is set. Having determined the flow net by using a steady state three-dimensional model. the results for the three cases of hydraulic conductivity are compared with the results of tracer methods (Bae and Kayane 1987) With the aid of four representative vertical cross-sections, groundwater flow systems in the study area are assumed. Water balances for the three cases indicate very good agreement between total recharge and discharge in each case Analyses of groundwater flow system based on the tritium concentrations and water quality measurements (Bae and Kayane 1987) are confirmed by the numerical simulation and the results obtained by these two methods appeared to be in close agreement.

In this paper, we present the equations of motion by which the natural vibration of a rotating annular disk can be analyzed accurately. These equations are derived from the theory of finite deformation and the principle of virtual work. The radial displacements of annular disk at the steady state where the disk is rotating at a constant angular velocity are determined by non-linear static equations formulated with 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction. The linearlized equations of the in-plane vibrations at the disturbed state are also formulated with 1-dimensional finite elements in radial direction along the number of nodal diameters. They are expressed as in functions of the radial displacements at the steady state and the disturbed displacements about the steady state. In-plane static deformation modes of an annular disk are used as the displacement functions for the interpolation functions of the 1-dimensional finite elements. The natural vibrations of an annular disk with different boundary conditions are analyzed by using the presented model and the 3-dimensional finite element model to verify accuracy of the presented equations of motion. Its results are compared and discussed.

For construction and design of tunnels, groundwater flow models are used to find the influence of groundwater to the stability of tunnels considering the geological condition around the tunnels and the materials used in tunnel linings. For the analysis of tunnel flow, some commercial programs, e.g. MODFLOW, SEEP/W etc., are used. These programs have limitations that MODFLOW could not define curved surface smoothly in three dimensional flow media and SEEP/W is the 2-dimensional flow model. In this paper, the ability of a finite element program developed for analyzing 3-dimensional groundwater flow is examined. Confined steady state groundwater flow solution in non-homogeneous media is obtained using isoparametric element with eight trilinear hexahedron nodes and is compared with the result of MODFLOW. It was found that the solution yielded a good result with the three dimensional flow studied.

Intake-air flow and distribution characteristics of the 1600cc gasoline engine intake manifold have been studied using the computer simulation. Simulation has been conducted using both one-dimensional performance simulation and three-dimensional CFD software. Steady state flow simulation result of the intake manifold shows good distribution characteristics that the standard deviation of flow coefficients is below 1.0 percentage for both one- and three-dimensional simulation. Even though one-dimensional simulation result slightly overestimates compared with three-dimensional simulation result, both results show very good agreement in flow coefficient trend. Also, unsteady state simulation result shows consistent distribution characteristics with that of steady state. It is shown that unsteady state distribution characteristics might be able to be predicted through the steady state mass distribution result.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the batch service queueing model M/M(a, b ; ${\mu}_k/1$) under general bulk service rule with mean service rate ${\mu}_k$ for a batch of k units, where $a{\leq}k{\leq}b$. This queueing model consists of the two-dimensional state space so that it is characterized by two-dimensional state Markov process. The steady-state solution and performane measure of this process are derived by using Matrix Geometric method. Meanwhile, a new approach is suggested to calculate the two-dimensional traffic density R which is used to obtain the steady-state solution. In addition, to determine the optimal service initiation threshold a, a decision model of this queueing system is developed evaluating cost of service per batch and cost of waiting per customer. In a job order production system, the decision-making procedure presented in this paper can be applicable to determining when production should be started.
