  • Different from the conventional motor, the superconducting motor has so large air-gap that the actual parameters such as excitation voltage have considerable difference from the values obtained from 2-dimensional electromagnetic analysis. This paper introduces 3-dimensional EMCH(Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network) method or FLUX-3D FEM(Finite Element Method) software to reduce the error originated from the 2-dimensional electromagnetic analysis for the development of a 1 MW class high-temperature superconducting motor.

  • Petri dishes and glass slides have been widely used as general substrates for in vitro mammalian cell cultures due to their culture viability, optical transparency, experimental convenience, and relatively low cost. Despite the aforementioned benefit, however, the flat two-dimensional substrates exhibit limited capability in terms of realistically mimicking cellular polarization, intercellular interaction, and differentiation in the non-physiological culture environment. Here, we report a protocol of culturing embryonic rat hippocampal neurons on the electro-spun polymeric network and the results from examination of neuronal cell behavior and network formation on this culture platform. A combinatorial method of laser-scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy and live-cell imaging technique was employed to track axonal outgrowth and synaptic connectivity of the neuronal cells deposited on this model culture environment. The present microfiber-based scaffold supports the prolonged viability of three-dimensionally-formed neuronal networks and their microscopic geometric parameters (i.e., microfiber diameter) strongly influence the axonal outgrowth and synaptic connection pattern. These results implies that electro-spun fiber scaffolds with fine control over surface chemistry and nano/microscopic geometry may be used as an economic and general platform for three-dimensional mammalian culture systems, particularly, neuronal lineage and other network forming cell lines.

  • A global path planning method using self-organizing feature map which is a method among a number of neural network is presented. The self-organizing feature map uses a randomized small valued initial weight vectors, selects the neuron whose weight vector best matches input as the winning neuron, and trains the weight vectors such that neurons within the activity bubble are moved toward the input vector On the other hand, the modified method in this research uses a predetermined initial weight vectors of 1-dimensional string and 2-dimensional mesh, gives the systematic input vector whose position best matches obstacles, and trains the weight vectors such that neurons within the activity bubble are moved toward the input vector. According to simulation results one can conclude that the modified neural network is useful tool for the global path planning problem of a mobile robot.

  • This paper describes an automated computer-aided engineering (CAE) system for three-dimensional structures. An automatic finite element mesh-generation technique, which is based on fuzzy knowledge processing and computational geometry techniques, is incorporated into the system, together with a commercial FE analysis code, and a commercial solid modeler. The system allows a geometry model of interest to be automatically converted to different FE models, depending on the physical phenomena of the structures to be analyzed, i.e., electrostatic analysis, stress analysis, modal analysis, and so on. Also, with the aid of multilayer neural networks, the present system allows us to obtain automatically a design window in which a number of satisfactory design solutions exist in a multi-dimensional design parameter space. The developed CAE system is successfully applied to evaluate an electrostatic micromachines.

  • This paper handles synthesis and investigation of a neural network guidance law based on pursuit-evasion games. This work considers two-dimensional pursuit-evasion games solved by using the gradient method. The procedure of developing a guidance law from the game-optimal solutions is deeply examined, and important features of the neural network guidance are investigated. The proposed neural network guidance law takes the range, range rate, line-of-sight rate, and heading error as its input variables. By reconstructing the trajectory, the accuracy of the neural network approximation is verified.   • Three-dimensional simulation of flow through dam foundation is performed using finite element (Seep3D model) and artificial neural network (ANN) models. The governing and discretized equation for seepage is obtained using the Galerkin method in heterogeneous and anisotropic porous media. The ANN is a feedforward four layer network employing the sigmoid function as an activator and the back-propagation algorithm for the network learning, using the water level elevations of the upstream and downstream of the dam, as input variables and the piezometric heads as the target outputs. The obtained results are compared with the piezometric data of Shahid Abbaspour's Dam. Both calculated data show a good agreement with available measurements that demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of purposed methods.

  • The 3-dimensional deformation measurement by the terrestrial photogrammetry is consist of 3-dimensional coordinates computation, displaced point detection and deformation estimation of object targets. In this study, at the first step of deformation analysis, the variation of the variance-covariance matrix for the exterior orientation elements was analyzed by the increment of the ground control points and the photos in the Bundle adjustment. And then, to give the constraints for improving accuracy of ground control points, the concept of Free-Network adjustment was applied to Bundle adjustment. As a result, we knew that it was desired in the accuracy and the economy, the observation time when the numbers of ground control point and photo were respectively 6 points and 3 photos. In addition, in the case of applying the concept of Free Network adjustment in Bundle adjutment, it was desirable that the space distance for the constraints is distributed outside.

  • The nematode-trapping process by Arthrobotrys conoides was investigated with the aid of scanning and transmission electron microscopy. 1. A. conoides captures nematode by means of three-dimensional network. 2. The wall of trap cell was thicker than that of vegetative hypha and the trap cell was more rich in cell organelles such as endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria and electrondense granule. 3. The electron-dense granule, which could be found only in trap organs, gradually disappeared during its penetration into nematode cuticle. 4. The osmiophilic area was found at adhering site between the trap organ and nematode cuticle. 5. In some cases, any appressorium was not found at the site of penetration. 6. When the fungal-nematode culture was conserved for 2~3 weeks, numerous young nematodes were found to be adhered to spores, resulting in death.

Three-dimensional shape measurement using grating patterns form an optical spatial modulator

  • An automatic measuring system of three dimensional shape by a projection method with grating pattern from in optical spatial modulator has been developed. The characteristics of the system were studied. This system is composed of a projector, an optical spatial modulator, a CCD camera, and computer. A liquid crystal is used as the optical spatial modulator. The grating patterns that ire projected on the surface of the object are controlled by the computer connected with the optical spatial modulator. The projector patterns are measured by the CCD camera. The data are transferred to the computer. After a transformation into line data, the data are analyzed to obtain the coordinate of the surface of the object. This system has advantages as follows. (1) It is possible to capture the surface topography without any contact. (2) The time required for the measurements is shorter than the light-section method. (3) An optical spatial modulator using a liquid crystal is possible to control the grating patterns accurately by a computer. Surfaces of a plate and a cylinder were measured. The threshold level had an influence on the measurement. It was shown that this system has adequae accuracy in the measurements.

  • Geography Information System is divided to many details fields such as Urban Information System, Land Information System, Military Information System etc. These detailed fields are connected each other and make National Geography Information System. Now Geography Information System is being used in many fields with Urban Information System. And information of all field is being constructed to network for share each other. Now Land Information System(LIS) is being constructed to two dimensional. But LIS can construct and utilize three dimensional geographic data by connecting Geography Information System and this effect will be greatest. Thus, the study of connecting cadastral map and digital terrain map must be continued. Through the study of connecting digital terrain map, the construction and analysis of three dimensional digital elevation model will be able to construct Land Information System effectively. To this study, the authors constructed integrated geographic data by uniting digital terrain map and cadastral map and constructed three dimensional digital elevation model. By connecting cadastral information database, the authors developed three dimensional Integrated Land Information System.
