  • A numerical simulation on a primary calcinator of porcelain was performed with using Fluent to calculate the heat efficiency by studying velocity vector and temperature profile according to variables such as the location of outlet and porcelain. Control-Volume based Finite Difference Method and Up-wind scheme are used for discretization of differential equation. SIMPLEC Algorithm and standard k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model are selected to resolve the pressure-velocity coupling and the turbulent. The result of simulation showed that the whole velocity vector field in a calcinator was varied greatly according to the location of outlet. But the whole temperature profile at each zone was still high regardless of the location of outlet because of the radiation. But the temperature of a case with a outlet at sidepart of preheating or cooling zone was little high compared to the case with a outlet on the top of preheating zone. The velocity vector field and temperature profile in a calcinator were almost not affected by the location of porcelain, but the temperature inside a porcelain was much affected according to the place where it was located. The heat efficiency in a calcinator was 44.6% and the gas temperature in the outlet was about 1000 K.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to present a recoil measurement and analysis of K2 rifle for the development of a virtual reality marksmanship training in the Republic of Korea Army. Methods: For the recoil measurement, a test-bed is built by a barrel that has exact dimensions of K2 rifle and three piezoelectric pressure sensors mounted on the barrel. Data of over 200 rounds of 5.56mm M193 and K100 bullets are collected and analyzed from live fire experiments. For the recoil analysis, both the free recoil method and the gas exhaust aftereffect method are used to calculate a recoil velocity, momentum and kinetic energy of K2 rifle by applying the law of conservation of momentum. In addition, a new method is proposed that uses the third law of motion and the chamber pressure model for the recoil measurement Results: The results show how different between the previous and proposed methods with respect to M193 and K100 bullets of K2 rifle. In M193, the free recoil method demonstrates 1.113, 4.197, and 2.335, the gas exhaust aftereffect method computes 1.698, 6.407, and 5.441, and the proposed method calculates 0.990, 3.734, and 1.848 in recoil velocity, momentum and kinetic energy, respectively. In K100, the free recoil method demonstrates 1.190, 4.487, and 2.669, the gas exhaust aftereffect method computes 1.776, 6.699, and 5.949, and the proposed method calculates 1.060, 3.998, and 2.119 in recoil velocity, momentum and kinetic energy, respectively. Conclusion: This study implements live fire experiments to provide recoil velocity, momentum, and kinetic energy of K2 rifle using both M193 and K100 bullets. For the development of the army virtual reality marksmanship, the results in this paper would be useful to design and produce a gun and/or a rifle of virtual reality.

  • The three-dimensional flow analysis using the finite volume method is presented to compare the steady flow characteristics of blood with those of blood substitutes such as water and aqueous polymer solution in an idealized double branching model. The model is used to simlllate the region of the abdominal aorta near the celiac and superior mesenteric branches. Apparent viscosities of blood and the aqueous Separan solution are represented as a function of shear rate by the Carreau model, Water and aqueoiu Separan AP-273 500wppm solution are frequently used as blood substitutes in vitro experiments. Water is a typical Newtonian fluid and blood and Separan solution are non-Newtonian fluids. Flow phenomena such as velocity distribution, pressure variation and wall shear stress distribution of water, blood and polymer solution are quite different due to differences of the rheological characteristics of fluids. Flow phenomena of polymer solution are qualitatively similar to those of blood but the phenomena of water are quite different from those of blood and polymer solution. It is recommended that a lion-Newtonian fluid which exhibits very similar rheological behavior to blood be used in vitro experiments. A non-Newtonian fluid whose rheological characteristics are very similar to those of blood should be used to obtain the meaninylll hemodynamic data for blood flow in vitro experiment and by numerical analysis

  • 3D seismic data processing methods such as full waveform inversion or reverse-time migration require 3D wave propagation modeling and heavy calculations. We compared efficiency and accuracy of a Xeon Phi coprocessor to those of a high-end server CPU using 3D frequency-domain wave propagation modeling. We adopted the OpenMP parallel programming to the time-domain finite difference algorithm by considering the characteristics of the Xeon Phi coprocessors. We applied the Fourier transform using a running-integration to obtain the frequency-domain wavefield. A numerical test on frequency-domain wavefield modeling was performed using the 3D SEG/EAGE salt velocity model. Consequently, we could obtain an accurate frequency-domain wavefield and attain a 1.44x speedup using the Xeon Phi coprocessor compared to the CPU.

  • In this study, hydraulic characteristics around bridge piers were analyzed with and without collar through a hydraulic model experiment. The analysis of stage variation in front and back side of pier showed that collar installation did not function as obstacle to the stream flow. Little variation of water level between front and back sides of pier was observed before and after collar installation(0.2cm in front side and 0.1cm in back side of pier). Also, result that analyze velocity variation in front and back side of pier, lateral velocity(u) and transverse(v) before and after collar installation exhibited no alteration in the front and back side of pier. About 16.72% and 15.83% of vertical velocities(w) were reduced for the condition of y/d=0.33 in the front side of pier and y/d=0.67 in the back side of pier, respectively. This experimental results suggest that the collar installation around pier can minimize the local scouring depth by preventing the downflow that cause the pier scour.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the human driving behavior based on the expression as a GMDH technique focusing on the driver's collision avoidance maneuver. The driving data are collected by using the three dimensional driving simulator based on CAVE, which provides stereoscopic immersive vision. A GMDH is also introduced and applied to the measured data in order to build a mathematical model of driving behavior. From the obtained model, it is found that the longitudinal distance between cars($x_1$), the longitudinal relative velocity($x_2$) and the lateral displacement between cars($x_4$) play important roles in the collision avoidance maneuver under the 3D environments.

  • With the recent industrial development, accidental pollution in riverine environments has frequently occurred. It is thus necessary to simulate pollutant transport and dispersion using water quality models for predicting pollutant residence times. In this study, we conducted a field experiment in a meandering reach of the Sum River, South Korea, to validate the field applicability and prediction accuracy of RAMS+ (River Analysis and Modeling System+), which is a two-dimensional (2D) stream flow/water quality analysis program. As a result of the simulation, the flow analysis model HDM-2Di and the water quality analysis model CTM-2D-TX accurately simulated the 2D flow characteristics, and transport and mixing behaviors of the pollutant tracer, respectively. In particular, CTM-2D-TX adequately reproduced the elongation of the pollutant cloud, caused by the storage effect associated with local low-velocity zones. Furthermore, the transport model effectively simulated the secondary flow-driven lateral mixing at the meander bend via 2D dispersion coefficients. We calculated the residence time for the critical concentration, and it was elucidated that the calculated residence times are spatially heterogeneous, even in the channel-width direction. The findings of this study suggest that the 2D water quality model could be the accidental pollution analysis tool more efficient and accurate than one-dimensional models, which cannot produce the 2D information such as the 2D residence time distribution.

  • The relationship between the tritium release rate from the nuclear power plant and tritium concentration in the environment around the Kori site was modeled. The tritium concentration in the atmosphere was calculated by multiplying the release rates and $\chi$/Q values, and the d3V deposition rate at each sector according to the direction and the distance was obtained using a dry deposition velocity. The area around Kori site was divided into 6 zones according to the deposition rate. The six zones were divided into 14 compartments for the numerical simulation. Transfer coefficients between the compartments were derived using site characterization data. Source terms were calculated from the dry deposition rates. Tritium concentration in surface soil water and groundwater was calculated based upon a compartment model. The semi-analytical solution of the compartment model was obtained with a computer program, AMBER. The results showed that most of tritium deposited onto the land released into the atmosphere and the sea. Also, the estimated concentration in the top soil agreed well to that measured. Using the model, tritium concentration was predicted in the case that the tritium release rates were doubled.

  • In this paper, free vibration finite element analysis of axially moving laminated composite beams subjected to axial tension is studied. It is assumed that the beam has a constant axial velocity and is subject to uniform axial tension. The analysis is based on higher-order theories that have been presented by Carrera Unified Formulation (CUF). In the CUF technique, the three dimensional (3D) displacement fields are expressed as the approximation of the arbitrary order of the displacement unknowns over the cross-section. This higher-order expansion is considered in equivalent single layer (ESL) model. The governing equations of motion are obtained via Hamilton's principle. Finally, several numerical examples are presented and the effect of the ply-angle, travelling speed and axial tension on the natural frequencies and beam stability are demonstrated.
