A numerical scheme solving the quasi-3D wave-induced circulation is presented. The governing equations have been solve implicitly using a fractional step method in conjunction with the approximate factroization techniques. The equation of each step was discretized by the finite volume scheme which yields more accurate and conservative approximations than the schemes based on finite differences. Examples of computed nearshore current patterns are presented to demonstrate the validity of the model for typical situations through comparison with laboratory experimental data (Gourlay. 1974).
Recently, various engineering approaches have been widely used in the accident investigation field to identify the cause of the accident and to predict damage by accident. Computational analysis is the most commonly used method of accident investigation technique. This technique is mainly used to identify the mechanism of the accident generation and to determine the cause when it is difficult to reproduce the situation at the time of the accident or when it is impossible to perform a reproduction experiment. In this study, The gas explosion analysis for LPG explosion accident generated by defect of the blocking action was performed to determine the accident object, gas leakage amount and predicted the damage caused by the accident using 3D laser scanner and FLACS program. We can quantify the explosive power by LPG gas accident and predict the gas leakage amount, damage by accident and evaluate the stability of the structure through this study. In the future, This method can be widely used in the field of gas safety by improving the reliability and validity of the analysis.

In this paper, an efficient computational algorithm for the implementation of the newly proposed node activation technique is presented, and its computational aspects are thoroughly investigated. To verify the validity, convergence, and efficiency of the node activation technique, various numerical examples are worked out including the problems of Poisson equation, 2D elasticity problems, and 3D elasticity problems. From the numerical tests, it is verified that one can arbitrarily activate and handle the nodal points of interest in finite element model with very little loss of the numerical accuracy.

The assessment of slope stability is an essential task in geotechnical engineering. In this paper, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element analysis (FEA) was employed to investigate the performance of different shear pin arrangements to increase the stability of a soil block resting on an inclined plane with a low-interface friction plane. In the numerical models, the soil block was modeled by volume elements with linear elastic perfectly plastic material in a drained condition, while the shear pins were modeled by volume elements with linear elastic material. Interface elements were used along the bedding plane (bedding interface element) and around the shear pins (shear pin interface element) to simulate the soil-structure interaction. Bedding interface elements were used to capture the shear sliding of the soil on the low-interface friction plane while shear pin interface elements were used to model the shear bonding of the soil around the pins. A failure analysis was performed by means of the gravity loading method. The results of the 3D FEA with the numerical models were compared to those with the physical models for all cases. The effects of the number of shear pins, the shear pin locations, the different shear pin arrangements, the thickness and the width of the soil block and the associated failure mechanisms were discussed.
This paper addresses the numerical simulation of fatigue crack growth in arbitrary 2D geometries under constant amplitude loading by the using a new finite element software. The purpose of this software is on the determination of 2D crack paths and surfaces as well as on the evaluation of components Lifetimes as a part of the damage tolerant assessment. Throughout the simulation of fatigue crack propagation an automatic adaptive mesh is carried out in the vicinity of the crack front nodes and in the elements which represent the higher stresses distribution. The fatigue crack direction and the corresponding stress-intensity factors are estimated at each small crack increment by employing the displacement extrapolation technique under facilitation of singular crack tip elements. The propagation is modeled by successive linear extensions, which are determined by the stress intensity factors under linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) assumption. The stress intensity factors range history must be recorded along the small crack increments. Upon completion of the stress intensity factors range history recording, fatigue crack propagation life of the examined specimen is predicted. A consistent transfer algorithm and a crack relaxation method are proposed and implemented for this purpose. Verification of the predicted fatigue life is validated with relevant experimental data and numerical results obtained by other researchers. The comparisons show that the program is capable of demonstrating the fatigue life prediction results as well as the fatigue crack path satisfactorily.
This paper deals with free vibration analysis of bidirectional functionally graded annular plates resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation. The formulations are based on the three-dimensional elasticity theory. This study presents a novel 2-D six-parameter power-law distribution for ceramic volume fraction of 2-D functionally graded materials that gives designers a powerful tool for flexible designing of structures under multi-functional requirements. Various material profiles along the thickness and in the in-plane directions are illustrated by using the 2-D power-law distribution. The effective material properties at a point are determined in terms of the local volume fractions and the material properties by the Mori-Tanaka scheme. The 2-D differential quadrature method as an efficient and accurate numerical tool is used to discretize the governing equations and to implement the boundary conditions. The fast rate of convergence of the method is shown and the results are compared against existing results in literature. Some new results for natural frequencies of the plates are prepared, which include the effects of elastic coefficients of foundation, boundary conditions, material and geometrical parameters. The interesting results indicate that a graded ceramic volume fraction in two directions has a higher capability to reduce the natural frequency than conventional 1-D functionally graded materials.
In this paper, the sensitivity compensation method for three-dimensional acoustic intensity probe in the higher frequency range has been studied. The measurement error in the higher frequency range is generated from the phase mismatch between microphone's signals of the probe. If the wavelength of sound signal measured is less than those of the distance between microphones of the probe, that is, the higher frequency of the sound signal, the bigger measurement error is generated. In this study, we proposed the compensation methods for one-dimensional acoustic intensity probe with two-microphones, and the efficiency of those methods were investigated by numerical calculation of computer. It was most effective method to compensate the phase mismatch between microphone for the acoustic intensity probe was investigated for the sound estimated. and the efficiency of this method in a three-dimensional probe was investigated for the sound wave travelling in the arbitrary direction by numerical calculation of computer. In this result, the efficiency was proved that, for the measurement error of 1dB or less with the three-dimensional probe of 60mm space, the frequency should be less than 1.2kHz without the error compensation method, but the frequency increased up to 2.8kHz with the error compensation method.
The goal of using numerical methods in this study is two-fold: to replicate a set of measured, individualized HRTFs by a computer simulation, and also to visualise the resultant sound field around the head. Two methods can be wed: the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Infinite-Finite Element Method (IFEM). This paper presents the results of a preliminary study carried out on a KEMAR dummy-head, the geometry of which was captured with a high accuracy 3-D laser scanner and digitiser. The scanned computer model was converted to a few valid BEM and IFEM meshes with different polygon resolutions, enabling us to optimise the simulation for different frequency ranges. The results show a good agreement between simulations and measurements of the sound pressure at the blocked ear-canal of the dummy-head. The principle of reciprocity provides an effect method to simulate HRTF database. The BEM was also used to investigate the total sound field around the head, providing a tool to visualise the sound field for different arrangements of virtual acoustic imaging systems.

In general, the effects of steel ribs are not considered in the numerical analysis of tunnel design. However, attempts have been increased recently to consider these effects in the analysis of shallow tunnels in soft ground, based on the fact that the steel ribs embedded in the shotcrete take a role to support some portion of the redistributed load due to excavation. In such analyses, the steel ribs can be considered in four different methods: (1) a conventional method where the steel ribs are not considered, (2) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which the bending moment of shotcrete is not considered, (3) a method using the equivalent composite cross section in which both the compressive stress and the bending moment for the shotcrete and steel rib are considered, and (4) a method using beam elements for the shotcrete and the steel rib, respectively. These methods are adopted in the numerical analysis using FLAC 2D to investigate stresses of both the shotcrete and the steel rib. The overall results show that the analyses are more practical and economical when the effects of steel rib are considered fer the methods (2), (3), and (4). Since the results of those analyses considering steel rib capacity may be different according to the ground condition, it will be necessary to consider the appropriate method among them in accordance with design conditions.

Typical results obtained by a newly developed, nonlinear time domain hybrid method for simulating large amplitude motions of ships advancing with constant forward speed in waves are presented. The method is hybrid in the way of combining a time-domain transient Green function method and a Rankine source method. The present approach employs a simple double integration algorithm with respect to time to simulate the free-surface boundary condition. During the simulation, the diffraction and radiation forces are computed by pressure integration over the mean wetted surface, whereas the incident wave and hydrostatic restoring forces/moments are calculated on the instantaneously wetted surface of the hull. Typical numerical results of application of the method to the seakeeping performance of a standard containership, namely the ITTC S175, are herein presented. Comparisons have been made between the results from the present method, the frequency domain 3D panel method (NEWDRIFT) of NTUA-SDL and available experimental data and good agreement has been observed for all studied cases between the results of the present method and comparable other data.
