  • In this study, the effects of Elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication pressure on the critical shoulder height of raceway in an angular contact ball bearing were investigated. Both 3D contact analyses using an influence function and the EHL analysis were conducted for the contact geometry between the ball and raceways. The pressure distributions by 3D contact analysis and EHL analysis for an example bearing were compared. The effect of ellipse truncation on the minimum film thickness also investigated from EHL analysis. The critical shoulder height in the dry contact and the EHL state were compared for various applied loads. It is shown that when the ellipse truncation occurs, the pressure spike for the EHL conjunction is higher than that for the dry contact, and its location moves more inward of the contact center. The steep pressure gradients would increase the flow rate, so in order to maintain flow continuity a significant reduction in film thickness and an abrupt rise in pressure occurs in the edge of shoulder. Significant reduction of the minimum film thickness occurs near the edge of shoulder. The critical shoulder heights in the EHL state are calculated as higher values compared with in the dry contact. This results shows that the determination of critical shoulder height by the EHL analysis is more proper.

  • It is required in designing a spot welding to get in advance an estimated figure of nugget diameter. A method of estimating nugget diameter of low carbon steel sheets is suggested in tesms of utilizing elastic calculation in theory and of making a sectional observation of specimen of spot welding in experiment. The resultant findings are summarized as follows: 1) A contact diameter of sheet, 2.gamma.$_{o}$=d sub e/+(1.1)t, wheer de is the electrode tip diameter and t is the thickness of sheets. 2) The practical measurement of the nugget diameter reveals that $d_{n}$=(1.05) $d_{e}$+(0.9)t, and $d_{b}$ is less by 0.8-4.3% than 2.gamma.$_{o}$. 3) The more $d_{n}$ is as compared with t, the less the difference between a theoretical value and an experimental value is. 4) In the spot welding of thin steel sheets less than 3mm in thickness that are commonly used in sheet metal works, the contact diameter equals the nugget diameter. In this case, either the theoretical or experimental approach can be used for estimating the nugget diameter.meter.ter.r.

  • PURPOSE. Implant site preparation may be adjusted to achieve the maximum possible primary stability. The aim of this investigation was to study the relation among bone-to-implant contact at insertion, bone density, and implant primary stability intra-operatively measured by a torque-measuring implant motor, when implant sites were undersized or tapped. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Undersized (n=14), standard (n=13), and tapped (n=13) implant sites were prepared on 9 segments of bovine ribs. After measuring bone density using the implant motor, 40 implants were placed, and their primary stability assessed by measuring the integral of the torque-depth insertion curve. Bovine ribs were then processed histologically, the bone-to-implant contact measured and statistically correlated to bone density and the integral. RESULTS. Bone-to-implant contact and the integral of the torque-depth curve were significantly greater for undersized sites than tapped sites. Moreover, a correlation between bone to implant contact, the integral and bone density was found under all preparation conditions. The slope of the bone-to-implant/density and integral/density lines was significantly greater for undersized sites, while those corresponding to standard prepared and tapped sites did not differ significantly. CONCLUSION. The integral of the torque-depth curve provided reliable information about bone-to-implant contact and primary implant stability even in tapped or undersized sites. The linear relations found among the parameters suggests a connection between extent and modality of undersizing and the corresponding increase of the integral and, consequently, of primary stability. These results might help the physician determine the extent of undersizing needed to achieve the proper implant primary stability, according to the planned loading protocol.

  • Owing to high speed internet technologies, video conferencing systems are exploited in our home as well as work places using a laptop or a webcam. Although eye contact in the video conferencing system is significant, most systems do not support good eye contact due to improper locations of cameras. Several ideas have been proposed to solve the eye contact problem; however, some of them require complicated hardware configurations and expensive customized hardwares. In this paper, we propose a simple eye gaze correction method using the three-dimensional (3D) affine transformation. We also apply an image in-painting method to fill empty holes that are caused by round-off errors from the coordinate transformation. From experiments, we obtained visually improved results.

  • Purpose: Changes of refractive correction value in different age group were investigated. Regarding the inhibitive effects against myopia progression after wearing reverse geometry contact lenses and myopia control lenses (MC lenses), the effects after wearing single vision lenses were compared. Methods: We organized children between the ages of six and fifteen into three groups by age, and distributed fifty-seven reverse geometry contact lenses, fifty-six MC lenses and seventy-eight single vision lenses among them to be worn. Group 1 consisted of children aged ten and under, Group 2 consisted of children between the ages of eleven and fifteen, and Group 3 represents all of the study participants. The aim of this study was to learn the inhibitive effects against myopia progression attained by changes of refractive correction value and to verify their statistical significance at twelve months and under, thirteen to twenty-four months and twenty-five to thirty-six months. Results: Changes of refractive correction value by each length of use in Group 3 were as follows. For the age group of under twelve months, participants using the reverse geometric contact lens showed no change, while those using the MC or single vision lens had significant changes (P<0.05) of $-0.36{\pm}0.10$ D and $-0.67{\pm}0.52$ D, respectively. Users of all three lens types displayed significant change (P<0.05), in the age group of between thirteen and twenty-four months, of $0.18{\pm}0.49$ D, $0.60{\pm}0.42$ D and $1.37{\pm}0.72$ D for users of the reverse geometry contact lens, the MC lens and the single vision lens, respectively. There were significant changes (P<0.05) of $0.29{\pm}0.61$ D, $0.93{\pm}0.57$ D and $1.72{\pm}0.78$ in the same respective order as the above in the age group of twenty-five to thirty-six months. Refractive correction value showed changes with different age group. Group 1 displayed significant changes (P<0.05) of $0.29{\pm}0.73$ D, $1.07{\pm}0.59$ D and $1.75{\pm}0.74$ D for users of the reverse geometry contact lens, MC lens and single vision lens, respectively, up to thirty-six months of lens wearing; Group 2, also up to thirty-six months, displayed significant changes (P<0.05) of $0.28{\pm}0.42$ D, $0.75{\pm}0.49$ D and $1.70{\pm}0.84$ D in the same respective order, and changes in refractive correction for the age group under ten years was significantly greater (P<0.05) for the age group of eleven and older. Conclusions: The results found in this study demonstrate that there were no changes of refractive correction value for the case of wearing reversing geometry contact lens up to twelve month or less. MC lens showed less changes in variations of visual acuity for all users which might be resulted in inhibiting progression of myoptia. When both reverse geometry contact lens and the MC lens are wearing for the period from 13 to 36 month, both lens showed less changes in variation of visual acuity for all users. The results suggested that the less changes in variation of visual acuity of both lens had an effect on inhibiting progression of myopia.

  • This paper aims at the precursor analysis and DB development of electrical fires based on thermal and current signals for partial disconnection and poor contact on electric wires through experiments and simulations. Also, DB system required for developing the precursor DB with these data was studied and designed. Firstly, in case of partial disconnection, characteristics were derived and analyzed by experiment and electrical-thermal finite element method(Flux 3D) on the model wires which consist of VCTF and IV electric wires. Based on the characteristics, About 351 partial disconnection precursor patterns were generated by the thermal analysis for electric wire according to deterioration time under normal state and 200% overload state of rated current. Secondly, in order to develop poor contact precursor patterns, temperature value and the current signal were considered. In simulating the poor contact situation on connector area of MCCB, connection torque was changed. Through the experimental analysis, about 251 poor contact precursor patterns were generated. Finally, Using thermal precursor patterns obtained by partial disconnection and poor contact, electrical fire thermal precursor DB was developed.

  • In the present study, a contact search and check algorithm for general tool surface described by triangular FE patch is proposed. To improve numerical stability, SEAM element using the linear Coons interpolation has been used. To check the proposed algorithm, both clover cup and L-shape cup deep drawing processes are calculated. The computed results shows that the proposed contact algorithm can be successfully applied for sheet metal forming processes with general shaped tools.

  • Surface roughness plays a significant role in friction, wear, and lubrication in machine components. Most engineering surfaces have the nongaussian distrubution. So, in this study, contact simulation are conducted for not only gaussian surfaces but also nongaussian surfaces. Nongaussian rough surface censidering the kurtosis is generated numerically, And the effects of kurtosis on real contact area fraction, average gap, and mean asperity contact pressure are studied. It will be shown that the real contact area fraction and the mean asperity contact pressure are sensitive to the characteristics of surface geometry according to kurtosis.
