  • In this paper, we describe the development of a system for generating a 3-dimensional human face and predicting it's appearance as it ages over subsequent years using 3D scanned facial data and photo images. It is composed of 3-dimensional texture mapping functions, a facial definition parameter input tool, and 3-dimensional facial prediction algorithms. With the texture mapping functions, we can generate a new model of a given face at a specified age using a scanned facial model and photo images. The texture mapping is done using three photo images - a front and two side images of a face. The facial definition parameter input tool is a user interface necessary for texture mapping and used for matching facial feature points between photo images and a 3D scanned facial model in order to obtain material values in high resolution. We have calculated material values for future facial models and predicted future facial models in high resolution with a statistical analysis using 100 scanned facial models.

  • A 3D face shape derived from 2D images may be useful in many applications, such as face recognition, face synthesis and human computer interaction. To do this, we develop a fast 3D Active Appearance Model (3D-AAM) method using depth estimation. The training images include specific 3D face poses which are extremely different from one another. The landmark's depth information of landmarks is estimated from the training image sequence by using the approximated Jacobian matrix. It is added at the test phase to deal with the 3D pose variations of the input face. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can efficiently fit the face shape, including the variations of facial expressions and 3D pose variations, better than the typical AAM, and can estimate accurate 3D face shape from images.

  • The 3D laser scanner operates by measuring the distance from the sensor to the target and operates on the same principle as Electronic Distance Measuring (EDM). Recently, 3D laser scanning technology has been rapidly developed in line with the strongly increasing demand for 3D information acquisition. Therefore, it is now possible to more easily acquire geometric information of various objects existing in real space. In this study, we constructed geospatial information by using new equipment which integrated 3D laser scanner and total station, and we suggest the possibility of using new technology for geospatial information construction by comparing and analyzing with existing methods. In the study result, we demonstrated the efficiency of the geospatial information constructed by integration of 3D laser scanner and total station. The proposed method is expected to shorten the time required for data acquisition compared to the existing method using the existing total station. Furthermore, it is possible to use various methods such as cross section analysis and volume calculation using the acquired data. In the future, spatial information construction by integration of 3D laser scanner and total station will help improve work efficiency in related fields.

  • This study is performed to investigate the characteristics of the palatal morphology of the children with anterior crossbite in Hellman dental age IIIA by 3-dimensional laser scanner. Totally 40 study casts were taken; 20 were from children with crossbite and another 20 were from normal occlusion as a control. Each cast was scanned by 3 dimension laser scanner and shaped by the 3 dimension image by rapidform 2000 program(INUS, Korea). And finally it was calculated by Rhino 3D program(Rhinoceros, USA). The intercanine, intermolar cross-sectioned transverse plane and sagittal plane were measured. Due to the variations in palatal morphology, each group was standardized into 25mm, 35mm, 35mm. By sectioning standardized curves of the Palatal morphology per 1mm, the palatal depth of each point was calculated. Through these complex methods, the mean curves of the palatal morphology could be obtained and the values were statistically compared and evaluated by T-test with 95% of significance level. The results were as follows: 1. In the intercanine cross-sectioned transverse plane, the mean curve of palatal morphology of crossbite group was flatter V shape than that of control group, however, there was no statistical significance was found between two groups(P>0.05). 2. In the intermolar cross-sectioned transverse plane, the mean curve of palatal morphology of crossbite was deeper all over the area than that of control group, and the statistical significance was found in the middle area from point 8 to 21(P<0.05). 3. In the sagittal plane, the mean curve of palatal morphology of crossbite group was more deepening as approaching posteriorly than that of control group, and the statistical significance was found in all over the area(P<0.01).

  • The purpose of this study was to elucidate the size and morphologic characteristics of maxillary primary first molars in Korean children using three-dimensional laser scanner and compare three-dimensional image with preformed stainless steel crown. Scanned three-dimensional images of dental cast taken from 132 children(male 62, female 70) by three-dimensional laser scanner(Breuckmann opto-Top HE100, INUS, Korea) were used. Mesiodistal diameter, buccolingual diameter, occlusogingival height and crown shape of each image were calculated by Rapidform 2004 program(INUS, Korea). The values were statistically compared by independent samples t-test with 95% of significant level. The results were as follows : 1. No significant difference in crown size was found between left and right maxillay primary first molar(p>0.05). 2, Significant difference in mesiodistal diameter, buccolingual diameter, buccal occlusogingival height was found between male and female (p<0.05), and crown size of male was bigger than that of female. 3. Average image of maxillay primary first molar was shaped three-dimensionally and measured. In comparison with 3M stainless steel crown, this image was similar with No.4 or No.5 SS crown in male, No.4 in female. In comparison with ILSUNG SS crown, this image was similar with No.5 in male, No.4 in female. 4 Mesiolingual line angle area, distolingual line angle area and buccogingival ridge were more obvious in average image than 3M stainless steel crown. ILSUNG SS crown was more square and had longer mesiodistal diameter than average 3D image.

  • The regular assessment of a building is important to understand structural safety and latent risk in the early stages of building life cycle. However, methods of traditional assessment are subjective, atypical, labor-intensive, and time-consuming and as such the reliability of these results has been questioned. This study proposed a method to bring accurate results using a 3D laser scanner and integrate them in Building Information Modeling (BIM) to visualize defective condition. The specific process for this study was as follows: (1) semi-automated data acquisition using 3D laser scanner and python script, (2) scan-to-BIM process, (3) integrating and visualizing defective conditions data using dynamo. The method proposed in this study improved efficiency and productivity in a building assessment through omitting the additional process of measurement and documentation. The visualized 3D model allows building facility managers to make more effective decisions. Ultimately, this is expected to improve the efficiency of building maintenance works.

  • The reverse engineering (RE) technology can quickly generate 3D point cloud data of an object by capturing the surface of a model using a 3D scanner. In the rapid prototyping (RP) technology, prototypes are rapidly produced from 3D CAD models in a layer-by-layer additive basis. In this paper, a physical human head shape is duplicated using a new RP process, the Transfer-type Variable Lamination Manufacturing process using expandable polystyrene foam sheet (VLM-ST), after the point cloud data of a human head shape measured from 3D SNX scanner are converted to STL file. From the duplicated human head shape, it has been shown that the VLM-ST process in connection with the 3D scanner is a fast and efficient process in that shapes with free surface, such as the human head shape, can be duplicated with ease. Considering the measurement time and the shape duplication time, the use of 3D SNX scanner and the VLM-ST process is expected to reduce the lead-time fur the development of new products in comparison with the other existing RE-RP connected manufacturing systems.

  • Recently, many industries are using three dimensional scanning technology. As the performance of the 3D scanner gradually improves, a sampling step to reduce a point data or a remove step to remove a part determined to be noise are generally performed in post processing. However, total point data by long time scanning cannot be processed at once in spite of performing such those additional processes. In general, a method using a multi threaded environment is widely used, but as the scanning process work time increases, the processing performance gradually decreases due to various environmental conditions and accumulated operations. This paper proposes a method to initially remove point data judged to be unnecessary by calculating accumulated fast point feature histogram values from coming point data of the 3D scanner in real time. The entire 3D scanning process can be reduced using this approach.
