  • Dynamic response of steel plate girder bridges by KL-510 design truck in KHBDC considering the road surface roughness of bridges and bridge-vehicle interaction is investigated. Simply supported steel plate girder bridges with span length of 20m, 30m, and 40m from "Standard Highway Bridge Superstructure" published by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for a bridge model, and ten sets of the road surface roughness of bridge deck are generated from power spectral density (PSD) function by assuming the roadway as "Average Road". A three dimensionally modeled 5-axle tractor-trailer with its gross weight, which is the same as that of KL-510 design truck, is used for dynamic analysis. For the finite element modeling of superstructure, beam element for the main girder, shell element for the concrete deck, and rigid link between main girder and concrete deck are used. Impact factor and DLA of steel plate girder bridges for different span are calculated by the proposed numerical analysis model and compared with those specified by several bridge codes.

  • Dynamic responses of steel plate girder bridges considering road surface roughness of bridge and bridge-vehicle interaction are investigated by numerical analysis. Simply supported steel plate girder bridges with span length of 20 m, 30 m, and 40 m from "The Standardized Design of Highway Bridge Superstructure" published by the Korean Ministry of Construction are used for bridge model and the road surface roughness of bridge decks are generated from power spectral density(PSD) function for different road. Three different vehicles of 2- and 3-axle dump trucks, and 5-axle tractor-trailer(DB-24), are modeled three dimensionally. For the bridge superstructure, beam elements for the main girder, shell elements for concrete deck, and rigid links between main girder and concrete deck are used. • The suspension bridge is divided by an earth anchor and a self-anchor type according to the anchorage type. This study is to evaluate the dynamic effect of moving vehicles to suspension bridges. The results were presented with the dynamic magnification factor (DMF) by the effect of vehicle speed and weight according to the anchorage type. The vehicle model has 6 degrees of freedom to idealize nonlinear multi-leaf suspensions and elastic tires of tractor-trailer. The bridge was modelled with the 3-dimensional frame element and 3-dimensional elastic catenary cable element. The condition of deck surface is considered using the actual road spectra.

  • This study examined the problems of existing vehicles to propose alternatives to improve the crashworthiness of railway freight cars through collision acceleration analysis using a one-dimensional collision analysis method. A collision scenario of railway shunting and crash accidents was selected from the collision accident cases and international standards. A one-dimensional collision simulation using LS-DYNA was performed according to those scenarios. As a result, the acceleration level of the freight wagon was calculated to be under 2g and was predicted to meet the EN 12663 standard in the shunting situation. On the other hand, the result of crash simulation with an impact velocity between 10 and 15 km/h revealed the shock absorber capacity of the railway coupler to be insufficient in a crash situation, resulting in increased acceleration, and carbody deformation could be predicted. As a method of improving the crashworthiness, a deformation tube-type energy absorber was applied to the coupler system, and collision analysis was performed again with new energy absorption strategy. Overall, the simulation showed that the acceleration level was decreased by 12% of the conventional freight-car energy absorption system.

  • Recent developments in robotics and intelligent vehicle area, bring interests of people in an autonomous driving ability and advanced driving assistance system. Especially fully automatic parking ability is one of the key issues of intelligent vehicles, and accurate parked vehicles detection is essential for this issue. In previous researches, many types of sensors are used for detecting vehicles, 2D LiDAR is popular since it offers accurate range information without preprocessing. The L shape feature is most popular 2D feature for vehicle detection, however it has an ambiguity on different objects such as building, bushes and this occurs misdetection problem. Therefore we propose the accurate vehicle detection method by using a 3D complete vehicle model in 3D point clouds acquired from front inclined 2D LiDAR. The proposed method is decomposed into two steps: vehicle candidate extraction, vehicle detection. By combination of L shape feature and point clouds segmentation, we extract the objects which are highly related to vehicles and apply 3D model to detect vehicles accurately. The method guarantees high detection performance and gives plentiful information for autonomous parking. To evaluate the method, we use various parking situation in complex urban scene data. Experimental results shows the qualitative and quantitative performance efficiently.

  • In this study, the numerical method is presented, which can consider the various train types and can solve the equations of motion for a vehicle-bridge interaction analysis by non-iteration procedure through formulating the coupled equations of motion. The coupled equations of motion for the vehicle-bridge interaction are solved by the Newmark ${\beta}$ of a direct integration method, and by composing the effective stiffness matrix and the effective force vector according to a analysis step, those can be solved with the same manner of the solving procedure of equilibrium equations in static analysis. Also, the effective stiffness matrix is reconstructed by the Skyline method for increasing the analysis effectiveness. The Cholesky's matrix decomposition scheme is applied to the analysis procedure for minimizing the numerical errors that can be generated in directly calculating the inverse matrix. The equations of motion for the conventional trains are derived, and the numerical models of the conventional trains are idealized by a set of linear springs and dashpots with 16 degrees of freedom. The bridge models are simplified by the 3 dimensional space frame element which is based on the Euler-Bernoulli theory. The rail irregularities of vertical and lateral directions are generated by the PSD functions of the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). The results of the vehicle-bridge interaction analysis are verified by the experimental results for the railway plate girder bridges of a span length with 12 m, 18 m, and the experimental and analytical data are applied to the low pass filtering scheme, and the basis frequency of the filtering is a 2 times of the 1st fundamental frequency of a bridge bending.

  • Five bases for of highways are sight distance, vehicle stability, driver comfort, drainage and aesthetics. Among these bases, the sight distance is the most critical one in the highway alignment design. It is certain that highways and drivers' observation actions are 3-dimensional in nature. But, the highway alignment design and the sight distance analysis have been performed on 2-dimensional planes because of various constraints and complexity of calculating 3-dimensional sight distance. The purpose of this study is to derive a model for determining exact available sight distance in 3-D combined horizontal and vertical alignments. Application of the model is illustrated using numerical examples. The proposed model should be useful in quantifying the criteria for 3-D highway alignments.

  • In this paper, we propose a collision simulation technique the evaluation of urban trains. We perform simulation that include a dynamics bogie model which represents the dynamic behavior of bogies and a finite-element model that can model crash behavior. We perform simulation in accordance with the 40-mm vertical offset head-on scenario for overriding the evaluation of the EU and domestic crashworthiness regulations. We evaluate the overriding by the vertical displacement of the wheelset using the overriding evaluation standard. Finally, if proposed simulation technique is applied, we can evaluate the overriding for urban-train crashworthiness regulations.

  • A maglev vehicle of middle-low speed subjected to both a lift force and a guidance force by a U-shaped single electromagnet is operated over a curved guideway without a guidance controller. Therefore, it is required to carefully decide the curve shape for preventing contact between the vehicle and the guiderail for the case that a Maglev vehicle is operated over a curved guideway with a small radius. Specifically, the shape of the transition curve is very important from the stability viewpoint. This study analyzes the influence of curve shape on maglev stability through parametric composition of the transition curve during vehicle guidance. To this end, a multibody dynamics-based threedimensional Maglev vehicle model was developed. The model was integrated with the vehicle, curved guideway, electromagnets, and their controllers. Using this model, a realistic parametric study including the curved guideway was carried out. The results of research should be considered usefully in the design of bogies and the curve shape.
