This study constructed a 3D geological model for Uggi Nuur Fe-Mn mineralization zone in Mongolia, and the 3D geological distribution is cross-analyzed with magnetic anomaly distribution to figure out relationship between ore zone and subsurface geology. As a result of 4 step 3D modeling procedures including geological cross section, surface modeling, foliation modeling and solid modeling, the geology of the both study area is bordered by faults in NW direction with Munguntessj formation being located in the west side of the fault while Yashill formation is located on the other side of the fault. Moreover, the strike direction of foliation in the both formation shows same directional pattern with the NW faults. The magnetic anomaly distribution reveals that higher anomaly values are concentrated to near the ground surface. The analyses of 3 dimensional distribution between subsurface geology and magnetic anomaly indicates that higher anomaly is mainly distributed over the Munguntessj formation as a elongated lens bodies whereas the magnetic anomaly is evenly found in the both of Munguntessj formation and Yashill formation in the study area 2. It infers that volcanic activities associated mineralization occurred during silurian period, and the mineralized zone is thought to be realigned along the geological structures caused by later stage tectonic activities.
In this study, we developed the trial product on 3D magnetic inversion tentatively named 'KMag3D'. Also, we briefly introduced its own function and graphic user interface on which especially focused through the development in the form of user manual. KMag3D is consisted of two fundamental frame for the 3D magnetic inversion. First, algebraic reconstruction technique was selected as a 3D inversion algorithm instead of least square method conventionally used in various magnetic inversion. By comparison, it was turned out that algebraic reconstruction algorithm was more effective and economic than that of least squares in aspect of both computation time and memory. Second, for the effective determination of the 3D initial and a-priori information model required in the execution of our algorithm, we proposed the practical technique based on the assemblage of 2D forward modeling and inversion results for individual user-selected 2D profiles. And in succession, initial and a-priori information model were constructed by appropriate interpolation along the strke direction. From this, we concluded that our technique is both suitable and very practical for the application of 3D magentic inversion problem.
3D magnetic inversion, based on the assemblage of 2D forward modeling and inversion as a practical technique to reflect the a priori information, was conducted to investigate the spatial distribution features of black-shale related and pyrometamorphic uranium deposit and several lithological units of Ogcheon Super Group in an area of Geumsan. By using the 3D visualization technique with suitable susceptibility interval and horizontal slice map, the spatial distribution of magnetic susceptibility corresponded to the black shale related uranium bearing lithological units, Black Slate member was well coincided with a information of uranium deposit. Also, even though it is indirect indicator for the detetction of uranium deposits interbedded in Gray Hornfels member, spatial susceptibility distribution which shows the south-east magnetic linearment corresponding to the Majeon-ri formation and Dark Gray Slate were matched well. From this investigation, we inferred that maximum depth extension which Black Slate member can be separately recognized with respect to adjacent Dark Gray Slate with strong magnetic susceptibility anomaly is about 150m with reference elevation level of 306m. In addition, Majeon-ri formation located south of Black Slate member revels relatively high magnetic susceptibility range but shows high spatial susceptibility fluctation. And, as an intrusive rocks, Jurassic Biotite Granite shows relatively low magnetic susceptibility characteristics. On the contrary, Cretaceous granite distributed in soutthern part of the study area shows the relatively high susceptibility distribution.
We developed a method for inverting magnetic data to recover the 3D susceptibility models. The major difficulty in the inversion of the potential data is the non-uniqueness and the vast computing time. The insufficient number of data compared with that of inversion blocks intensifies the non-uniqueness problem. Furthermore, there is poor depth resolution inherent in magnetic data. To overcome this non-uniqueness problem, we propose a resolution model constraint that imposes large penalty on the model parameter with good resolution; on the other hand, small penalty on the model parameter with poor resolution. Using this model constraint, the model parameter with a poor resolution can be effectively resolved. Moreover, the wavelet transform and parallel solving were introduced to save the computing time. Through the wavelet transform, a large system matrix was transformed to a sparse matrix and solved by a parallel linear equation solver. This procedure is able to enormously save the computing time for the 3D inversion of magnetic data. The developed inversion algorithm is applied to the inversion of the synthetic data for typical models of magnetic anomalies and real airborne data obtained at the Geumsan area of Korea.

Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) and Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia (MRAM) performed a joint survey on Ugii Nuur Fe-Mn mineralized area. Following the survey, we carried out magnetic survey and 3D magnetic susceptibility inversion. Based on the inversion results, basic feasibility study and 3D imaging of Fe-Mn mineralized area were performed using 3D geological modeling technique. Using the distribution of total magnetic field data, we were confirmed for the possibility of horizontal extension of ore bodies from surface outcrops. The 3D magnetic susceptibility model, which is highly related with Fe content, analyzed by inversion shows that the ore bodies of Deposit 1 and Deposit 2 are extended to the underground and ore bodies that are not exposed on the surface are largely distributed in the underground. If we perform the integration analysis using this magnetic susceptibility model and the ore grade data analyzed by drilling survey, it is possible to carry out the effective potential evaluation of Ugii Nuur Fe-Mn ore deposit.

We analyze the comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) magnetic structure characteristics from the seafloor to the deep layer of the Tofua Arc (TA) 12 seamount in the Tonga Arc, Southwestern Pacific, using bathymetric and geomagnetic data, and magnetization vector inversion (MVI) results. The seafloor features surrounding TA 12 highlight a NW-SE-oriented elliptical caldera at the summit of the seamount, two small cones in the depressed area. A large-scale sea valley is present on the western flank of the seamount, extending from these caldera cones to the southwestern base of the seamount. TA 12 seamount exhibits a low magnetic anomaly in the caldera depression, whereas a high magnetic anomaly is observed surrounding the low magnetic anomaly across the caldera summit. It is therefore presumed that there may be a strong magnetic material distribution or magma intrusion in the caldera. The 3D MVI results show that the high anomaly zones are mainly present in the surrounding slopes of the seamount from the seafloor to the -3,000 m (below the seafloor) level, with the magnetic susceptibility intensity increasing as the seafloor level increases at the caldera depression. However, small high anomaly zones are present across the study area near the seafloor level. Therefore, we expect that the magma ascent in TA 12 seamount migrated from the flanks to the depression area. Furthermore, we assume that the complex magnetic distribution near the seafloor is due to the remnant magnetization.

Helicopter-borne aeromagnetic surveys at two different times separated by three years were conducted to better understand the shallow subsurface structure of the Vulcano and Lipari volcanic complex, Aeolian Islands, southern Italy, and also to monitor the volcanic activity of the area. As there was no meaningful difference between the two magnetic datasets to imply an apparent change of the volcanic activity, the datasets were merged to produce an aeromagnetic map with wider coverage than was given by a single dataset. Apparent magnetisation intensity mapping was applied to terrain-corrected magnetic anomalies, and showed local magnetisation highs in and around Fossa Cone, suggesting heterogeneity of the cone. Magnetic modelling was conducted for three of those magnetisation highs. Each model implied the presence of concealed volcanic products overlain by pyroclastic rocks from the Fossa crater. The model for the Fossa crater area suggests a buried trachytic lava flow on the southern edge of the present crater. The magnetic model at Forgia Vecchia suggests that phreatic cones can be interpreted as resulting from a concealed eruptive centre, with thick latitic lavas that fill up Fossa Caldera. However, the distribution of lavas seems to be limited to a smaller area than was expected from drilling results. This can be explained partly by alteration of the lavas by intense hydrothermal activity, as seen at geothermal areas close to Porto Levante. The magnetic model at the north-eastern Fossa Cone implies that thick lavas accumulated as another eruption centre in the early stage of the activity of Fossa. Recent geoelectric surveys showed high-resistivity zones in the areas of the last two magnetic models.
Gravity and Magnetic survey data were analyzed to investigate the geophysical characteristics and regional geological structures of the southwestern Yellow Sea. The set of data about the southwestern part of the Yellow Sea in Korea was one collected by the Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (KORDI) in 2003, 2004, and 2005. The Yellow Sea has a few basins and the study area also includes parts of the Heuksan Basin and the East China Sea Basin. The bathymetry of the study area ranges from about ?40 m southwestward near China to about 150 m northeastward near Korea. The bathymetry has the gentle rise and fall and the smooth slope. The gravity anomalies, from sea surface gravity and satellite gravity data, reflect the basement rocks rather than the smooth bathymetry. The gravity anomalies are higher on Northeastern part of the study area and lower over the South of the Heuksan Basin. The analytic signal from the Bouguer anomaly shows higher anomalous zones near the boundaries of the basins. The magnetic anomalies and the analytic signal, from the magnetic data, suggest that the complex anomalies on the Northern part are attributed to the volcanic intrusions and that the smooth patterns in the Southern part are based on the lack of the intrusions. The power spectrum analysis of the Bouguer anomalies and the magnetic anomalies indicate that the depth to the Moho discontinuity varies from about 30.2 to 28.3 km and that the depths of the basement rocks and the Eocene discontinuity range from about 8.4 to 8 km and from about 1.5 to 1.7 km, respectively. The inversion of the Bouguer anomaly shows that the Moho depth to the Western part of the study area near China is slightly deeper than the Eastern part near Korea. The result of 2-D gravity modeling has a good coherence with the results of the analytic signal, the power spectrum analysis, and the inversion.
