  • Fire resistance and material properties of high-strength concrete (W/B 21.5%, 28.5%) with OPC, BS and FA were tested in this study. Main factors of the test consisted of fiber mixing ratio and W/B. Two types of fiber (NY, PP) mixed with the same weight were used for the test. The fiber mixing ratios were 0%, 0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2% of the concrete weight. After performing the test, Under the W/B level of 21.5% and 28.5%, the spalling was effectively resisted by using the high strength concrete with fiber mixing ratios of 0.05%~0.1%. Compressive strength, flowability and air content are similar those of the fiberless high-strength concrete with the same W/B.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of estimating the setting time and compressive strength in Ternary Blended Concrete(TBC) using Settimeter, Strength meter, and Hybrid meter. It was determined that the hardness values at the initial setting time and final setting time of Settimeter, Hybrid meter, and at the 5 MPa of Strength meter were not affected by the mixing ratio of TBC. However, future studies need to consider the errors caused by the instability of the measurement surface during condensation and the state of the measurement surface after hardening.

  • GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) has been widely used in concrete for its excellent resistance chloride and chemical attack, however cracks due to hydration heat and dry shrinkage are reported. In many International Standards, GGBFS with low fineness of 3,000 grade is classified for wide commercialization and crack control. In this paper, the mechanical and durability performance of concrete were investigated through two mix proportions; One (BS) has 50% of w/b(water to binder) ratio and 60% replacement ratio with low-fineness GGBFS, and the other (TS) has 50% of w/b and 60% replacement ratio with 4000 grade and FA (Fly Ash). The strength difference between TS and BS concrete was not great from 3 day to 91 day of age, and BS showed excellent performance for chloride diffusion and carbonation resistance. Two mixtures also indicate a high durability index (more than 90.0) for freezing-thawing since they contain sufficient air content. Through improvement of strength in low fineness GGBFS concrete at early age, mass concrete with low hydration heat and high durability can be manufactured.

  • Reactive Powder Concrete (RPC) is an ultra high strength and high ductility cement-based composite material and has shown some promise as a new generation concrete in construction field. It is characterized by a silica fume-cement mixture with very low water-binder (w/b) ratio and very dense microstructure, which is formed using various powders such as cement, silica fume and very fine quartz sand (0.15~0.4mm) instead of ordinary coarse aggregate. However, the unit weight of cement in RPC is as high as 900~1,000 kg/㎥ due to the use of very fine sand instead of coarse aggregate, and a large volume of relatively expensive silica fume as a high reactivity pozzolan is also used, which is not produced in Korea and thus must be imported. Since the density of RPC has a heavy weight at 2.5~3.0 g/㎤. In this study, the modified RPC was made by the combination of ternary pozzolanic materials such as blast furnace slag and fly ash, silica fume in order to economically and practically feasible for Korea's situation. The fire resistance and structural behavior of the modified RPC exposed to high temperature were investigated.

  • Whereas the control of the hydration heat in mass concrete has been important as the concrete structures enlarge, many conventional strategies show some limitations in their effectiveness and practicality. Therefore, In this study, as a solution of controling the heat of hydration of mass concrete, a method to reduce the heat of hydration by controlling the hardening of cement was examined. The reduction of the hydration heat by the developed Phosphate Inorganic Salt was basically verified in the insulated boxes filled with binder paste or concrete mixture. That is, the effects of the Phosphate Inorganic Salt on the hydration heat, flow or slump, and compressive strength were analyzed in binary and ternary blended cement which is generally used for low heat. As a result, the internal maximum temperature rise induced by the hydration heat was decreased by 9.5~10.6% and 10.1~11.7% for binder paste and concrete mixed with the Phosphate Inorganic Salt, respectively. Besides, the delay of the time corresponding to the peak temperature was apparently observed, which is beneficial to the emission of the internal hydration heat in real structures. The Phosphate Inorganic Salt that was developed and verified by a series of the aforementioned experiments showed better performance than the existing ones in terms of the control of the hydration heat and other performance. It can be used for the purpose of hydration heat of mass concrete in the future.

  • It has been well known that concrete structures exposed to acid and sulfate environments such as sewer, sewage and wastewater, soil, groundwater, and seawater etc. show significant decrease in their durability due to chemical attack. Such deleterious acid and sulfate attacks lead to expansion and cracking in concrete, and thus, eventually result in damage to concrete matrix by forming expansive hydration products due to the reaction between portland cement hydration products and acid and sulfate ions. Objectives of this experimental research are to investigate the effect of mineral admixtures on the resistance to acid and sulfate attack in concrete and to suggest high-resistance concrete mix against acid and sulfate attack. For this purpose, concretes specimens with three types of cement (ordinary portland cement (OPC), binary blended cement (BBC), and ternary blended cement (TBC) composed of different types and proportions of admixtures) were prepared at water-biner ratios of 32% and 43%. The concrete specimens were immersed in fresh water, 5% sulfuric acid, 10% sodium sulfate, and 10% magnesium sulfate solutions for 28, 56, 91, 182, and 365 days, respectively. To evaluate the resistance to acid and sulfate for concrete specimens, visual appearance changes were observed and compressive strength ratios and mass change ratios were measured. It was observed from the test results that the resistance against sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate solutions of the concretes containing mineral admixtures were much better than that of OPC concrete, but in the case of magnesium sulfate solution the concretes containing mineral admixtures was less resistant than OPC concrete due to formation of magnesium silicate hydrate (M-S-H) which is non-cementitious.

  • This paper reports on analyzing the free and restrained shrinkage characteristic of ternary grout used cementitious admixture. In this study, the cementitious admixture was used such as fly ash, ziricania silica fume by combination of expansive additive (a, b) and shrinkage reducing agent. And a number of basic performance tests were conducted to investigate bleeding, volume change, fluidity and compressive strength behavior. According to the results, within appropriate mixing ratio, even the fluidity is not influenced by expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent, the resistant properties of bleeding, volume change, shrinkage and compressive strength are increased. Comparing with plain grout, the free shrinkage reduced by a minimum of 29% which specimens are added expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent. The combination of expansive additive a and shrinkage reducing agent is the most effective for reduction of shrinkage. And increasing the mixing ratio of expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent extended cracking time. Nevertheless, combined addition of expansive additive a 2.0% and shrinkage reducing agent 0.50% has best shrinkage reduction behavior and not appeared cracking. From the above, the mixing ratio of 2.0% of expansive additive a and 0.50% of shrinkage reducing agent is high performance ternary grout for PSC bridge.

  • With the recent development in construction industry, industrial by-products fly ash(FA) and blast furnace slag(BS) have been used in large quantities as an alternative to cement, as a solution for environmental problems and resource exhaustion. This study analyzed the basic characteristics according to the changes in replacement ratio and mixing ratio of FA and BS in high strength SCMs concrete, from which in turn it sought to find the optimal mixing ratio for high strength concrete The results showed that in unhardened concrete the more the replacement ratio and FA mixing ratio increases the slump flow will increase while amount of air decreases, and setting time is delayed. In hardened concrete the more the replacement ratio and FA mixing ratio increases the more the overall compression strength decreases, but until 28 days of material age the larger of the BS ratio displayed the best compression strength.

  • High flowing concrete has not spread whole in the normal concrete structure, because it requires special quality control technique. And recently owing to the lack of natural resources and reinforcement of environmental standard, the construction cost of cement is increased rapidly. Also rem icon industry has gone through various economical difficulty as the manufacture cost of concrete is increased. So, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the qualities of middle fluidity concrete using the fly-ash and portland blast-furnace slag cement in order to decrease the amount of cement and resolve the problem of the quality control of high flowing concrete and the manufacture cost. The results of this study show that it reduce the amount of addition of superplasticizer and develope properties of concrete to the use the fly-ash and portland blast-furnace slag cement.

  • The present study assessed the micro structure and durability characteristics of ternary blended cement with different types of alkali activators. Ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) and ferronickel slag(FNS) was replaced until 50 % of the weight of cement. In addition, potassuim hydroxide and sodium hydroxide were used for comparing the properties of different type of alkali activator. Ternary blended cement with alkali activators showed higher peak portlandite peak than that of OPC(Ordinary Portlande Cement) and non activated ternary blended cement. Also, there was no new hydration products in ternary blended cement or/and alkali activators. Based on the mercury intrustion porosimetry(MIP) test result, ternary blended cement increased macro pore while alkali activated ternary blended cement modified pore structure and increased microp pore as compared to OPC as control. Combination with alkali activators is desirable to enhance the compressive strength and freeze thaw resistance.
