  • This paper proposes a 3D fashion design system that generates a 3D clothes model by using 2D patterns of clothes and drapes the 3D clothes model on a 3D human model. In the proposed system, 2D patterns of clothes are designed by selecting comer points of 2D mesh. After designing 2D patterns, a 3D clothes model is designed by describing the control points to be connected between 2D patterns. The proposed system reads a 3D human body model file and the designed 3D clothes model and creates a 3D human model putting on the clothes by using the mass-spring model based physical simulation. It calculates collision and reaction between the triangles of human body model and those of clothes for realistic simulation. Because the number of triangles is very large, the collision and reaction processing need a lot of time. To solve this problem, the proposed system decreases the number of collision and reaction processing by using the Octree space subdivision technique. It took a few seconds for generating a 3D human model putting on the designed 3D clothes.

  • The new model proposed in this paper is the hidden Markov mesh model or the 2D HMM with the causality of top-down and left-right direction. With the addition of the causality constraint, two algorithms for the evaluation of a model and the maximum likelihood estimation of model parameters have been developed theoretically which are based on the forward-backward algorithm. It is a more natural extension of the 1D HMM than other 2D models. The proposed method will provide a useful way of modeling highly variable image patterns such as offline cursive characters.

  • In this paper, we propose an algorithm that extracts a high-precision 3D skeleton using a model generated using a distributed RGB-D camera. When information about a 3D model is extracted through a distributed RGB-D camera, if the information of the 3D model is used, a skeleton with higher precision can be obtained. In this paper, in order to improve the precision of the 2D skeleton, we find the conditions to obtain the 2D skeleton well using the PCA. Through this, high-quality 2D skeletons are obtained, and high-precision 3D skeletons are extracted by combining the information of the 2D skeletons. Even though this process goes through, the generated skeleton may have errors, so we propose an algorithm that removes these errors by using the information of the 3D model. We were able to extract very high accuracy skeletons using the proposed method.

  • In large scale environments like airport, museum, large warehouse and department store, autonomous mobile robots will play an important role in security and surveillance tasks. Robotic security guards will give the surveyed information of large scale environments and communicate with human operator with that kind of data such as if there is an object or not and a window is open. Both for visualization of information and as human machine interface for remote control, a 3D model can give much more useful information than the typical 2D maps used in many robotic applications today. It is easier to understandable and makes user feel like being in a location of robot so that user could interact with robot more naturally in a remote circumstance and see structures such as windows and doors that cannot be seen in a 2D model. In this paper we present our simple and easy to use method to obtain a 3D textured model. For expression of reality, we need to integrate the 3D models and real scenes. Most of other cases of 3D modeling method consist of two data acquisition devices. One for getting a 3D model and another for obtaining realistic textures. In this case, the former device would be 2D laser range-finder and the latter device would be common camera. Our algorithm consists of building a measurement-based 2D metric map which is acquired by laser range-finder, texture acquisition/stitching and texture-mapping to corresponding 3D model. The algorithm is implemented with laser sensor for obtaining 2D/3D metric map and two cameras for gathering texture. Our geometric 3D model consists of planes that model the floor and walls. The geometry of the planes is extracted from the 2D metric map data. Textures for the floor and walls are generated from the images captured by two 1394 cameras which have wide Field of View angle. Image stitching and image cutting process is used to generate textured images for corresponding with a 3D model. The algorithm is applied to 2 cases which are corridor and space that has the four wall like room of building. The generated 3D map model of indoor environment is shown with VRML format and can be viewed in a web browser with a VRML plug-in. The proposed algorithm can be applied to 3D model-based remote surveillance system through WWW.

  • PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a method for improving the accuracy of analysis results obtained from a two-dimensional (2-D) numerical analysis model of continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP). METHODS : The analysis results from the 2-D numerical model of CRCP are compared with those from more rigorous three-dimensional (3-D) models of CRCP, and the relationships between the results are recognized. In addition, the numerical analysis results are compared with the results obtained from field experiments. By performing these comparisons, the calibration factors used for the 2-D CRCP model are determined. RESULTS : The results from the comparisons between 2-D and 3-D CRCP analyses show that with the 2-D CRCP model, concrete stresses can be overestimated significantly, and crack widths can either be underestimated or overestimated by a slight margin depending on the assumption of plane stress or plane strain. The behaviors of crack width in field measurements are comparable to those obtained from the numerical model of CRCP. CONCLUSIONS : The accuracy of analysis results from the 2-D CRCP model can be improved significantly by applying calibration factors obtained from comparisons with 3-D analyses and field experiments.

  • Since 3D face can be rotated freely in 3D space and illumination effects can be modeled properly, 3D face modeling Is more precise and realistic in face pose, illumination, and expression than 2D face modeling. Thus, 3D modeling is necessitated much in face recognition, game, avatar, and etc. In this paper, we propose a 3D face modeling method based on 3D morphable shape modeling. The proposed 3D modeling method first constructs a 3D morphable shape model out of 3D face scan data obtained using a 3D scanner Next, the proposed method extracts and matches feature points of the face from 2D image sequence containing a face to be modeled, and then estimates 3D vertex coordinates of the feature points using a factorization based SfM technique. Then, the proposed method obtains a 3D shape model of the face to be modeled by fitting the 3D vertices to the constructed 3D morphable shape model. Also, the proposed method makes a cylindrical texture map using 2D face image sequence. Finally, the proposed method builds a 3D face model by rendering the 3D face shape model with the cylindrical texture map. Through building processes of 3D face model by the proposed method, it is shown that the proposed method is relatively easy, fast and precise than the previous 3D face model methods.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of the 3D printed die models and to investigate its clinical applicability. Methods: Stone die models were fabricated from conventional impressions(stone die model; SDM, n=7). 3D virtual models obtained from the digital impressions were manufactured as a 3D printed die models using a 3D printer(3D printed die models;3DM, n=7). Reference model, stone die models and 3D printed die models were scanned with a reference scanner. All dies model dataset were superimposed with the reference model file by the "Best fit alignment" method using 3D analysis software. Statistical analysis was performed using the independent t-test and 2-way ANOVA (α=.05). Results: The RMS value of the 3D printed die model was significantly larger than the RMS value of the stone die model (P<.001). As a result of 2-way ANOVA, significant differences were found between the model group (P<.001) and the part (P<.001), and their interaction effects (P<.001). Conclusion: The 3D printed die model showed lower accuracy than the stone die model. Therefore, it is necessary to further improve the performance of 3D printer in order to apply the 3D printed model in prosthodontics.

  • This paper presents the results of parametric analyses to compute the axial capacity of a suction pile using 2D and 3D finite element approaches. The study is intended to simplify the process of analyzing suction piles from 3D to 2D model. The research focuses on obtaining the coefficient to be applied into the 2D model in order to obtain results that are as close as possible to the 3D model. Two 2D models were used in the analysis, namely the plane strain and axisymmetric models. The analyses were performed using two actual offshore soil data of the North and West Java Indonesia. The study reveals that the simplification of model through 2D Finite Element is achievable by applying the appropriate coefficient to the stiffness parameters. The results show that the simplified model of the 2D FEA provides more conservative results (with the difference between 2% to 7%) than the 3D FEA.

  • In this paper, we propose a 2D-FE model in single impact with combined physical factors to obtain a unique residual stress by shot peening. Applied physical parameters include elastic-plastic deformation of shot ball, material damping coefficients, strain rate, dynamic friction coefficients. Single impact FE model consists of 2D axisymmetric elements. The FE model with combined factors showed converged and unique distributions of surface stress, maximum compressive residual stress and deformation depth. Further, in contrast to the FE models with rigid shot and elastic deformable shot, FE model with plastic deformable shot produces residual stresses very close to experimental solutions by X-ray diffraction. We therefore validated the 2D FE model with combined peeing factors and plastic deformable shot. This FE model will be a base of the 3D FE model for residual stresses by multi-impact shot peening.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of generating 3D face by using single frontal face image and 3D generic face model. By using active appearance model (AAM), the control points among facial feature points were localized in the 2D input face image. Then, the transform parameters of 3D generic face model were found to minimize the error between the 2D control points and the corresponding 2D points projected from 3D facial model. Finally, by using the obtained model parameters, 3D face was generated. We applied this 3D face to 3D game framework and found that the proposed method could make a realistic 3D face of game user.
