수유기에 식이와 함께 섭취한 DHA가 산모의 혈액과 모유의 지질조성에 미치는 영향 (The Influence of DHA Supplementation in Maternal Diets on Fatty Acid Compositions of Plasma Lipids and Human Milk)

  • The most abundant long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid in brain lipids is docosahexaenoic acid(C22 : 6 N-3, DHA). It is incorporated into nerve tissues mostly in utero and during the first year of life. DHA in brain is derived from either pre-formed DHA in human milk or by infant hepatic synthesis from linolenic acid in milk. This study was designed to investigate the effects of DHA supplementation on fatty acid profiles in maternal plasma lipid and breast milk. Twenty lactating women participated in the study. Seven women took 3g of fish oil per day and vitamin E for 28 days starting from the day of giving birth. Five women consumed 1.5g of fish oil as well as tivamin E, and the rest took vitamin E supplements for the same period of time. Dietary questionnaires and 3 consecutive 24-h recalls were collected to evaluate theri nutritional status and food habits. Finding that DHA intake from fish was not significantly different among three experimental groups, the partcipants were instructed to continue eating their usual home diets. Milk samples were taken on the day of giving birth, as well as the 7th, 14th and 28th day being the supplement phase, and finally 2 weeks after the cessating of DHA supplements. The amounts of the fish oil supplements produced significant dose-dependent increased in the DHA content of milk and plasma, but to a lesser degree. Base-line for 28 days raised the level to 2.05$\pm$0.43% and 1.5g/day supplement produced DHA levels of 1.02$\pm$0.19%. The results of this study indicated that relatively small amount of dietary DHA supplementation significantly elevats DHA content in milk. This would clearly elevate the infant's DHA intake which in turn may have implications for the infant's brain development.

Marginal folate inadequacy observed in a group of young children in Kwangju, Korea

  • Folate is important for multiple metabolic processes such as nucleic acid synthesis and interconversions, and cell division. Folate deficiency may be a risk factor for several pathologies, such as neural tube birth defects, dementia, and cardiovascular diseases. The objectives of this study were to estimate folate intakes and plasma concentrations of young children living in Kwangju, Korea. Three consecutive 24-h food recalls and fasting blood samples were obtained from 24 boys and 30 girls, aged 2-6 y, living in Kwangju, Korea. The daily folate intake ($mean{\pm}SD$) of the children was $146.7{\pm}73.6{\mu}g$ dietary folate equivalents. No differences in folate intakes were observed by gender ($p{\geq}0.05$). The mean folate intakes of the 2 and 3 y old groups were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those of 5 and 6 y old groups. Over half of subjects consumed $mean{\pm}SD$) of all subjects was $19.2{\pm}8.7nmol/L$, and there was no significant difference by age nor gender ($p{\geq}0.05$). No significant correlation was observed between folate intakes and plasma folate concentrations. One subjeci (1.9%) in this study had a plasma folate concentration <6.8 nmol/L, which is indicative of folate deficiency. Approximately 24% of subjects had plasma folate concentrations of 6.8-13.4 nmol/L, which is representative of marginal folate status. In conclusion, some young children may have less than adequate folate status in Korea.

Vitamin E status of 20- to 59-year-old adults living in the Seoul metropolitan area of South Korea

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and functions primarily as a lipid antioxidant. Inadequate vitamin E status may increase risk of several chronic diseases. Thus, the objectives of this study were to estimate intake and plasma concentration of each tocopherol and to evaluate vitamin E status of Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Three consecutive 24-h food recalls and fasting blood samples were collected from healthy 20- to 59-y-old adults (33 males and 73 females) living in the Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea. ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$-, ${\delta}$-, and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol intakes and plasma concentrations of tocopherols (${\alpha}$-, ${\delta}$-, and ${\gamma}$- tocopherol) were analyzed by gender. RESULTS: Dietary vitamin E and total vitamin E intake (dietary plus supplemental vitamin E) was $17.68{\pm}14.34$ and $19.55{\pm}15.78mg$ ${\alpha}$-tocopherol equivalents, respectively. The mean daily ${\alpha}$-tocopherol, and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol intakes were $3.07{\pm}2.27mg$ and $5.98{\pm}3.74mg$, respectively. Intakes of total vitamin E and each tocopherol of males were significantly higher than those of females (P < 0.05). Plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentration was $15.45{\pm}10.16$ of males and $15.00{\pm}4.54{\mu}mol/L$ of females, respectively. There were no significant differences in plasma tocopherol concentrations by gender ($P{\geq}0.05$). Plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol was negatively correlated with ${\gamma}$-tocopherol intake (P < 0.05). Twenty-three percent of the subjects had plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentrations < $12{\mu}mol/L$ indicating a biochemical deficiency of vitamin E. Approximately 8% and 9% of these participants had plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol:total lipid ratio less than $1.59{\mu}mol/mmol$ and plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol:total cholesterol ratio less than $2.22{\mu}mol/mmol$, respectively, which are also indicative of vitamin E deficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin E intakes of Korean adults were generally adequate with the Korean Dietary Reference Intakes for vitamin E. However, ${\alpha}$-tocopherol intake was lower than that reported in other countries, and 23% of the subjects in the current study were vitamin E deficient based on plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentrations.

운동 목적에 따른 식행동 및 식이섭취 상태 (Eating Behaviors and Nutritional Status According to the Purpose of Exercise)

  • 본 연구는 젊은 성인을 대상으로 운동 목적에 따른 영양섭취 실태를 조사하고자 수행되었다. 규칙적으로 운동하고 있는 20~30대 남녀를 대상으로 운동 목적에 따라 근육증가군 107명과 체중감소군 107명을 나누어 비교 분석하였다. 그룹별 성별구성을 분석한 결과, 근육증가군은 주로 남성(75.2%)이 많은 반면 체중감소군은 여성(74.3%)이 많이 분포하고 있었다. BMI 판정결과 두 그룹간의 유의적인 차이는 없었으며, 체중감소군의 절반 이상(56%)이 저체중 또는 정상체중으로 나타났다. 근육증가군의 하루 운동시간 및 규칙적으로 운동한 기간이 체중감소군에 비하여 유의적으로 많았다(p<0.01). 영양지식의 상태는 근육증가군의 점수가 체중 감소군에 비하여 유의적으로 높은 것으로 나타났다(p<0.05). 식행동 또한 근육량 증가군의 점수가 체중감소군에 비하여 유의적으로 높았다(p<0.05). 영양섭취 상태를 살펴보면, 한국인영양섭취기준과 비교하였을 때 근육증가군의 에너지 섭취비율이 에너지필요추정량의 83.72%로 체중감소군의 74.53%에 비하여 유의적로 높았다(p<0.01). 권장섭취량에 대한 단백질 섭취비율은 근육증가군이 199.62%, 체중감소군은 136.36%로 나타났으며 근육증가군이 체중감소군에 비해 유의적으로 매우 많은 양을 섭취하고 있었다(p<0.001). 권장섭취량에 대한 칼슘 섭취비율은 근육증가군이 67.75%, 체중감소군은 68.64%로 조사되었으며, 두 군 모두 권장섭취량과 비교하여 매우 부족한 수준으로 나타났다. 이와 같이 본 연구에서는 근육증가를 목적으로 운동하는 경우 과량의 단백질을 섭취하고 있었으며, 체중감소를 목적으로 운동하는 경우 필요량에 미치지 못하는 에너지 섭취를 하는 것으로 나타났다.

2010년 국민건강영양조사에 근거한 매실가공품 섭취로부터 한국인의 일인당 하루 총페놀, 총플라보노이드 및 항산화능 섭취량 추정 (Estimation of Daily per Capita Intake of Total Phenolics, Total Flavonoids, and Antioxidant Capacities from Commercial Products of Japanese Apricot (Prunus mume) in the Korean Diet, Based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2010)

  • 본 연구에서는 시중에서 판매 중인 매실가공품 중 매실주 4종, 매실음료 2종, 매실원액 4종을 선정하여 총페놀 함량, 총플라보노이드 함량 및 항산화능을 정량 분석하고, 2010년도 국민건강영양조사 자료를 바탕으로 매실가공품 섭취를 통하여 얻어지는 총 페놀 함량, 총플라보노이드 함량 및 항산화능을 추정하였다. 2010년에 실시한 국민건강영양조사의 원시자료 분석을 통해 매실주(0.17 g/capita/day), 매실음료(1.39 g/capita/day), 매실원액(0.81 g/capita/day)의 일인당 하루 섭취량을 산출하였다. 매실가공품 섭취를 통해서 얻어진 일인당 하루 섭취량의 경우, 총페놀 섭취량은 1.05 mg GAE/capita/day, 총플라보노이드 섭취량은 0.13mg CE/capita/day, 항산화능은 0.70mg VCE/capita/day (DPPH법), 1.04 mg VCE/capita/day (ABTS법)였다. 일인당 하루 총페놀 섭취량, 총플라보노이드 섭취량 및 항산화능 섭취량 추정은 매실가공품의 섭취량뿐만 아니라 매실가공품 자체의 생리활성 성분의 함량에도 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다.
