The study was carried out using the final draft of the Infant Observation Scale for 1 year old infants. The scale consists of 42 items in 6 areas. Whereas the final draft of the Infant Observation Scale for 2 year old infants consists of 52 items in 6 areas. The subjects of this observation scale were 120 infants from the city of Busan. The results of the Infant Observation Scale for the 1 year old infant analysis for the purpose of test adequacy indecates that the internal consistency reliability is from .88 to .97. The results of the Infant Observation Scale for 2 year old infant analysis for test adequacy shows that the internal consistency reliability is from .76 to .97.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among mother's psychological characteristics(self-esteem, self-efficacy, and depression), parenting related factors(maternal parenting stress and mother's knowledge on infant development), maternal parenting style, and two-year-old infants' development. The participants consisted of 1735 mothers and their two-year old infants selected from a sample of the 3rd Panel Study of Korean Children(PSKC) by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education(KICCE), conducted in 2010. Data were analyzed by means of a Structural Equation Model(SEM) to identify the structure and relationships among the various factors. The significance of direct and indirect effects to test the mediating effect of maternal parenting style were identified via bootstrapping. The results indicated that maternal parenting style most definitely mediated the relationship among the mother's psychological characteristics(self-esteem and self-efficacy), parenting related factors(maternal parenting stress and mother's knowledge on Infant development) and the development of their two-year-old infants.

  • This study explored mother-infant interactions during reading of picture books with and without printed words. The interactions of 40 mother-infant dyads(??) were video-taped while mothers read the books aloud to their 1- or 2-year-old child at home. When reading the books with words, mothers used more "where" questions and gave more feedback to the non-verbal behavior of the infants. Mothers gave more labels, descriptions, predictions, and "what", "function/activity" questions when reading the wordless book. The infants used more nonverbal answers reading the book with words. The mothers of the 2-year-olds used more "what", "function/activity" questions, and gave feedback to their verbal behaviors. The 2-year-olds used more imitation, verbal answers, and comments. For the mothers of the 2-year-olds, the interaction with the wordless book led to more attention-recruiting and bridging. For the children, however, reading the wordless book led to more labels, questions, and comments.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the actual conditions of caregiver-infant ratios, group-room activity areas, evaluations of infant programs and caregiver-infant interactions based on structural and process indicators which are major factors of infant care. The subjects were 20 caregivers and 91 infants from 14 infant classes of 13 day care centers in Daejeon. An actual survey was conducted on caregiver-infant ratios and group-room activity areas, and teaching-learning plans for infants and daily schedules were gathered for the evaluation of infant programs. The caregiver-infant interactions were observed every one minute for a total of 20 minutes using Lee Wan Jeong's "Evaluation Measure of Caregiver-infant Interactions"(1999). The results of this study were as follows: First, caregiver-infant ratios ranged from 2.5 to 7 infants per caregiver, resulting in the difference of the number of infants. Second, the 14 classes for one-year-old infants were arranged in three different ways; 5 classrooms with distinctive activity areas, 2 without any divided areas and 7 containing a mix of partial activity areas. Third, in teaching-learning plans for infants, there were a large number of topics related to seasonal features and experiences while the fewest were about basic life habits. Fourth, in the caregiver-infant interactions, caregivers used more positive interactions and linguistic modeling than sensitive responses to infants and social interactions.

  • This study investigated relationships among infant development, teacher's sensitivity, home literacy environment, and infant-teacher interaction in the child care setting. Verbal and behavioral interactions between 30 2-year-old infant-teacher pairs were video-recorded during free play activities; teachers' sensitivity was observed by trained observers; infant development was assessed by teachers; data on the early home literacy environment were gathered through maternal self-reported questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-tests, and correlation analyses. Results indicated that boys showed more naming; girls showed more physical contact with teachers. Infants high in overall developmental level showed more behavioral interaction with teachers. Teacher's sensitivity correlated positively with behavioral imitating and negatively with questioning and nodding. Verbal interaction in the home correlated positively with nodding.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate meaning of teachers as they manifest themselves in the emotional regulation of 2year old infants in a daycare center. In addition, the research attempts to provide basic research data that can be used as a guideline for teacher's awareness, roles, attitudes, and classroom management for infant's emotional education in the future. To achieve this goal, participatory observation was conducted in a child care center class for infants under 2 years old from January 17 to January 29, 2012. The teacher is defined as follow : Teachers are authority figures whose image is that of absolute authority, and coupled with their dual role of passive caretakers. Additionally, they function as guides who guided infants through the process of emotional socialization, and played the central role of emotional contagion from whose expression speech and atmosphere the said infants receive much influence. Such results seemed to indicate that teachers today do not fully comprehend the importance of their roles in influencing the emotion regulation of infants.

This study is based on the epidemiological investigation of a measles outbreak in a preschool in Incheon, Korea, 2006. Methods : The subjects were 152 students at a preschool where a measles outbreak occurred. A questionnaire survey was conducted and serological testing for measles-specific IgM was preformed. Results : Of the fifteen confirmed, identified cases, eleven patients had been vaccinated with one dose, one patient had received two doses and three patients were unvaccinated. The three unvaccinated cases consisted of one 5-year-old child, one 3-year-old child and one 16-month-old infant. For the cases with one dose of the vaccination, there were 11 cases, which consisted of six 5-year-old children, two 4-year-old children, two 3-year-old children and one 2-year-old child. The case with two doses of the vaccination was one 4-year-old child. The attack rate of measles was 100% in the 0-dose group, 11.2% in the 1-dose group and 2.0% in the 2-dose group. The vaccine's efficacy was 88.8% in the 1-dose group and 98.0% in the 2-dose group. The vaccine effectiveness for the 2-dose group was higher than that of the 1-dose group. Conclusions : High coverage with a 2-dose vaccination should be maintained, and the vaccination should be given at the suitable time to prevent a measles outbreak with a changed outbreak pattern.
