In order to investigate the preventive and therapeutic of royal jelly on diabetes, the levels of blood glucose and serum lipids as well as the number of blood cells were determined in streptozotocin(STZ) diabetic rats. Rats were divided into seven groups. The RJ group was administered royal jelly and the STZ group was treated with streptozotocin to induce diabetes. To determine the preventive effect, diabetes was induced after administration of royal jelly for 2 weeks in group RS1/RS2. In group SR1/SR2 diabetic rats were administered royal jelly for 2 weeks to investigate the therapeutic effect. After 3 weeks, the body weight was reduced in STZ and SR1 groups and food intake was increased in the STZ, RS1 and SR1 groups. The blood glucose level was similar to the control group in the RJ, RS1 and RS2 groups and there was no effect in the other groups. The total lipid and triglyceride level were lower in the SR1 group as compared to STZ, and the total cholesterol level was higher in the STZ group. The index of atherogenesis was lower in the RJ and SR1 groups compared to the normal group. The number of red blood cells and hemoglobin was higher in the RJ and SR1 groups and the number of white blood cells was higher in the RJ and SR2 groups.
The effect of hemicellulose extracted from Shiitake mushroom(Lentinus edodes) on the level of blood sugar and cholesterol in the diabetes-induced rat by streptozotocin(STZ) was investigated. The yield of hemicellulose by extraction process of 5% salt extraction, preparation of alcohol insoluble substance, IN KOH extraction, acid precipitation(pH 3.0), and dialysis was 9.24%. The experimental plots divided to 1% cellulose group(control), 0.5% hemicellulose group(H-l) and 1% hemicellulose group(H-2). The groups were fed for 6 weeks, then continuously fed for 1 week after induction of diabetes by STZ. Feed intakes, weight gain and feed efficiency of the each groups were not significantly different, while water intakes and liver weight of H-2 group were lower than those of control and H-l group. Weight of liver in the H-2 group was significantly lower than those of control and H-l groups. The amounts of feces were 0.32 g/day in the control group, 0.43∼0.44 g/day in the H-l and H-2 groups, while the amounts of urine were 15.28 mL/day in the control group, 10.83∼11.20 mL/day in the H-l and H-2 groups. The content of blood glucose before diabetes induction(fed for 3∼5 weeks) was 111.2-132.6 mg/dL in the control group, not significantly different from others; After diabetes induction, however, the contents were 212.8 mg/dL in the control group, 140.0-144.0 mg/dL in the H-l and H-2 groups, which showed significant difference. Urine glucose contents of H-2 group before and after diabetes induction were lower than those of control and H-l groups. There was no significant difference in the content of neutral lipid between each groups. Total cholesterol contents were 101.6 mg/dL in the control group, 56.∼64.0 mg/dL in the hemicellulose groups. HDL-cholesterol content and atherogenic index of hemicellulose groups were lower than those of control group, respectively. In conclusion, the hemicellulose extracted from Shiitake mushroom represented improving and preventing effects for diabetes.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Successful recovery of an animal from exercise is essential, especially prior to the next exercise session. This study was conducted to find an effective exercise-to-rest period ratio for the restoration of energy sources and replenishment of anti-oxidative status in tissue after exercise. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirty-two rats were assigned to either non-training or training exercise groups for 5 weeks. After that period, the two groups were subdivided into four smaller groups: non-exercise (NE), exercise 0.5 hour and rest 1 hour (ER0.5:1), exercise 1 hour and rest 1 hour (ER1:1), exercise 2 hours and rest 1 hour (ER2:1). RESULTS: In the training group animals and compared to the NE group, the levels of plasma glucose after the rest period were significantly high in all ER groups but highest in the ER2:1 group. Similarly, the liver glycogen level was highest in the ER2:1 group. The plasma FFA level reached the highest level in the ER2:1 group but was similarly high in the ER0.5:1 group. Liver TG level was unchanged in the ER2:1 and ER1:1 groups but was significantly high in the ER0.5:1 group. Muscle TG levels were decreased in all three ER groups. Plasma protein levels were significantly high in the ER2:1 and ER0.5:1 groups. In both training animal and non-training animals, the liver protein levels did not change significantly between the NE and ER groups, irrespective of the exercise-to-rest ratio. In the training animal group, muscle protein level was significantly low in the ER2:1 and ER0.5:1 groups. The activity levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase, as well as the malondialdehyde concentration, were not significantly different between NE and ER groups, irrespective of the exercise-to-rest period ratio. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that animals provided with a 0.5:1 to 1:1 exercise-to-rest period ratio can restore their muscle energy sources and recover their anti-oxidative defense system.
This study examines the effects of choline deficiency and 2-acetylaminofluorene(2-AAF) on the lipid peroxide values, glucose 6-phosphatase(G6Pase) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities in rats fed different dietary fats. Weanling Sprague Dawley male rats fed the diets containing 15% beef tallow or 15% corn oil with vitamin fortification mixture or choline free vitamin mixture for 10 weeks. At 3th and 5th week, 2-AAF was injected twice each week intraperitoneally. Total 2-AAF injection was four times. 2-AAF and choline deficiency increased lipid peroxidation in corn oil groups, so the role of 2-AAF and choline deficiency in lipid peroxidation was more important in corn oil groups than beef tallow groups. G6Pase activities tended to be decreased by 2-AAF in choline deficient groups, and in corn oil groups, the enzyme activities were decreased significantly in all subgroups compaired to beef tallow groups. GST activities were increased by 2-AAF in beef tallow groups and choline deficiency in corn oil groups, and might defence against carcinogen metabolism and lipid peroxidation.
Objectives: This study tested the hypothesis that cryotherapy duration influences lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in a rat model. Materials and Methods: Six Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus) were used. Five sites were selected per animal and divided into 5 groups: a negative control group (NC), 2 positive control groups (PC1 and PC2), and 2 experimental groups (E1 and E2). Cryotherapy was applied for 1 minute (E1) or 5 minutes (E2). An acute inflammatory response was induced in the PC and E groups via subcutaneous administration of 0.5 mL/kg. In the PC2 group, a catheter was inserted without additional treatment. For the E1 and E2 groups, 2.5℃ saline solution was administered through the implanted catheters for 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. The rats were sacrificed, and samples were obtained and processed for histological analysis, specifically examining the presence of polymorphonuclear neutrophils and hemorrhage. The χ2 test was used to compare the presence of acute inflammation across groups. Dependent variables were compared using the linear-by-linear association test. Results: Inflammation and hemorrhage varied significantly among the groups (p = 0.001). A significantly higher degree of acute inflammation was detected (p = 0.0002) in the PC and E1 samples than in the E2 group, in which cryotherapy was administered for 5 minutes. The PC and E1 groups also exhibited significantly greater numbers of neutrophils (p = 0.007), which were essentially absent in both the NC and E2 groups. Conclusions: Cryotherapy administration for 5 minutes reduced the acute inflammation associated with LPS and catheter implantation.

Ginkgo biloba L. has been planted in the city as street trees because reported as resistant species to air pollutant. Especially, the trees planted on the street of 'Cheongro', Mt. 'Nam', and 'Jamsil' have been exposed to air pollutant for a long time. This study was conducted to examine chlorophyll contents and genetic variation of Ginkgo biloba in the areas. Chlorophyll contents measured in the above three areas were variable although the the diameter at breast height measured in 'Cheongro' and Mt. 'Nam' were constant. In addition, the result showed positive relation between chlorophyll contents and DBH in this study. Eight enzyme systems were analyzed in megagametophytes which were collected in the areas and separated to two groups based on chlorophyll contents. All the enzymes appeared to be polymorphic : Got-2, Pgi-2, Pgm, Acon, Mnr, Mdh, Skdh, and 6Pgd. The sensitive (S) groups varied from 1.253 to 2.571 in the genetic diversity and the tolerant (T) groups ranged from 1.416 to 2.825. The observed single locus heterozygosities (H$_{0}$) ranged from 0.056 to 0.611 in the S groups, and from 0.179 to 1.643 in the T groups. The expected heterozygosities (H$_{e}$) ranged from 0.208 to 0.629 in the S groups and from 0.321 to 0.658 in the T groups. In addition, the H$_{0}$ values averaged over all loci were 0.326 for the T groups and 0.299 for the S group, respectively. A difference between the two groups was 0.027. The T groups had the unique alleles and genotypes and all the parameters for genetic diversity showed that the T groups had higher genetic diversity than the S groups.s. genetic diversity than the S groups.
Every finite solvable group is only a subgroup of an M-groups and all M-groups are solvable. Supersolvable group is an M-groups and also subgroups of solvable or supersolvable groups are solvable or supersolvable. But a subgroup of an M-groups need not be an M-groups . It has been studied that whether a normal subgroup or Hall subgroup of an M-groups is an M-groups or not. In this note, we investigate some historical research background on the M-groups and also we give some conditions that a normal subgroup of an M-groups is an M-groups and show that a solvable group is an M-group.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of different additives on the growth performance, feed efficiency and carcass characteristics in Holstein steers during 18month fattening periods. Twenty four Holstein steers, 5months of age and 176.6kg, were randomly allocated to 3 experimental groups 8 animals each for 18-months feeding trial. The groups were control (not additive), T1 (fed zinc, Vitamin C) and T2 (fed zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Selenium). According to feeding additives, final weight was not significantly different among the treatment groups, tended to be high at T2 group (827kg) compared to the other groups. Average daily gain was not different among the treatment groups during the experimental periods, but T2 group was significantly greater than T1 group in growing stage (p<0.05). The feed additives had no effects on DMI during experimental periods. Feed conversion ratio of T1 group in growing stage was significantly higher than those of other groups (p<0.05), average feed conversion ratio was tend to be decreased at T2 group rather compared with other groups. In the results of yield traits, carcass weight were relatively higher in T2 group than other groups (p<0.05). Rib-eye area, back fat thickness and yield index were similar between groups. In quality traits, marbling, meat color, fat color, texture and maturity were not significantly different among the groups. In economic efficiency, income was highest at T2 group as 91~393 thousand won among 3 groups.
We studied the effects of behavior modification and aerobic exercise on body weight, degree of obesity, % body fat, triceps skinfold thickness, blood pressure and eating behavior among overweight middle school girls. 15 girls participated in the behavior modification program by joining 60-90 minute group session weekly. The aerobic exercise program was given to 13 girls 3 times per week with 60 minutes each time. The data were obtained before treatment, after 4 and 8 weeks after treatment. In analyzing the data, repeated measures ANOVA were adopted. The results were as follows ; 1. For the changes of body weight between 2 groups, body weight of behavior modification groups decreased significantly than these of aerobic exercise group at 4 and 8 weeks after treatment, 2. For the changes of degree of obesity between 2 groups, there were no significant differences over time, 3. The analysis of change of % body fat did not reveal significant differences between 2 groups over time, 4. The changes of triceps skinfold thickness were significant differences between 2 groups over time, 5. For the changes of systolic blood pressure between 2 groups, there were significant differences over time. At 4 weeks after treatment, systolic blood pressure of behavior modification group decreased significantly than these of aerobic exercise group. 6. The changes of diastolic blood pressure were significant differences between 2 groups over time.
In this paper it was attempted to observe the effect of defatted panax ginseng supplement of the growth rate, feed and protein efficiency ratios, and the contents of cholesterol, total lipid and protein in the serum, liver and aorta in Sprague-Dowley Albino male rat (weighing 83 ${\pm}$ 4 g). Seven kinds of experimental diets were prepared as follows : Stock (control) diet, ginseng control diets supplemented with 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0% of ginseng powder to the stock diet, and defatted ginseng Powder diets supplemented with 0.5, 1.0 and 3.0% of defatted ginseng powder to the stock diet. .All diets contained same level of lipid and protein, respectively. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The growth rate in the feeding group of 0.5% defatted ginseng powder diet for 16week were higher than other diet groups. 2. Feed and Protein efficiency in 0.5% defatted ginseng group showed similar tendency to that in body growth rate. 3. The total cholesterol contents in the serum of 0.5% defatted ginseng Powder diet$.$ group showed the tendency to decrease gradually for 4 to 12 weeks, maintaining higher level than other groups. The free cholesterol contents in the serum of defatted ginseng powder diet group in 8 the and 16th weeks were higher than all ginseng control diet group. The total and free cholesterol contents in the liver of all defatted ginseng diet groups in 16th week were higher than hose of all ginseng control groups. The total cholesterol content at 12h week and the free cholesterol content at 16th week i n the aorta of all defatted ginseng diet groups were lower than those of ginseng control groups, respectively. 4. The total lipid contents in the serum of 1.0 and 3.0% defatted ginseng diet groups at 2nd to I2th weeks were lower than other groups, and those in the liver and aorta of all defatted ginseng diet groups at 12th weeks were lower than those of ginseng control diet groups. 5. The protein contents of the serum and aorta were continuously increased throughout whole experimental period in all experimental groups. The protein content of the liver of all groups were decreased at 2nd week and after then no change was observed.
