  • In this study, the lightweight design of a brake bracket for a composite bogie was studied by considering two brake bracket models with thicknesses of 12t and 9t, respectively. For achieving this goal, finite element analysis and topology optimization were conducted. Firstly, the largest cross-sectional areas of the vertical and horizontal plates of the brake bracket were selected as the design variables. As the constraint, the Z-axis displacement of the brake bracket was increased by 2.5 units from the initial displacement value. The minimum volume fraction of the design regions was chosen as the objective function. The full model comprised a composite bogie frame and brackets attached together. However, to reduce the analysis time, 1D beam elements were used instead of the composite bogie frame by ensuring its equivalence with the full model. The result revealed that the weights of the 12t and 9t models of the brake bracket were reduced to 60 kg and 31 kg, respectively.

  • This paper describes a cloth simulation system for dressing 3D virtual human model with different pieces of clothing. The garments are constructed of cutting patterns seamed together. The system reads a body file and a cutting pattern file and produces a new model dressed with the specified garment by using a physical simulation based on a mass-spring model. For the realistic cloth simulation, it performs collision detection and response between triangles of the 3D human model and the garment. Because the number of triangles of a human model is very large. the collision detection and response requires a lot of time. To overcome this problem, we propose a pruning method which decreases the number of collision detection and response by a space-subdivision method. Experimental results show that the system produces realistic images and makes it possible to sew a garment around a virtual human body in several seconds.

  • In the case of small observation towers located at sea, it is necessary to confirm the change in dynamic characteristics due to the influence of environmental loads. In this study, the dynamic characteristics were analyzed and the numerical analysis model was designed through field dynamic response measurement on the Mangyeong Offshore Observation Tower (Mangyeong Tower) located near the Saemangeum Embankment. As a result of the measurement, the natural frequency was found to increase slowly as the tide level is lowered. In addition, it was confirmed that the same mode has two frequencies, which was judged to be a phenomenon in which the natural frequency was partially increased when the pile and the ground contacted by scouring. For numerical analysis, the upper mass, artificial fixity point, scour depth and fluid influences are reflected in the structural characteristics of the Mangyeong Tower. In addition, the model updating from the estimated natural frequency and pattern search algorithm was performed. From the model updating, it is expected that it can be applied to future studies on stability of Mangyeong Tower.

  • A numerical study of turbulent condensing vapor jet submerged in subcooled liquids has been conducted. A physical model of the process is presented employing the locally homogeneous flow approximation of two phase flow in conjunction with a $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$-g model of turbulence properties. In this model the turbulence is represented by differential equations for its kinetic energy and dissipation. A differential equation for the concentration fluctuations is solved and a clipped normal probability distribution function is proposed for the mixture fraction. Effects of steam mass flux, pool temperature and nozzle internal diameter on the condensing vapor jet are also analyzed. The model is evaluated using existing data for turbulent condensing vapor jets. The agreement between the predictions and the available experimental data is good.

  • The goal of this work is to present an advanced method of an estimation of the Modeling Uncertainties coming up in industrial rigid robot's manipulator and actuators. First, with the given physical robot model, the motion equation was derived. Considering a fictitious model, a new extended motion equation is developed. Based on this extended model, an observer and observer bank are designed for the estimation of modeling uncertainties which are involving the effects of gravity, friction, mass unbalance, and Coriolis which show the nonlinear characteristics in operation states.

  • Generally, earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for stability In this paper, the spatial structures are applied an isolation system to boundary parts between roof systems and sub-structures. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behaviors of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high-rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to develop the equivalent lumped mass model to simplify an analytical processes and to investigate the dynamic behaviors of roof systems according to the mass and stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures.

  • In this paper, we apply a mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ control to a generalized plant of inverted pendulum system represented by an LFR(Linear Fractional Representation). First, in order to obtain the generalized plant, the linear model of the inverted pendulum represented by an LFR(Linear fractional Representation) is derived. In LFR, we consider system uncertainties as three nonlinear components and a pendulum mass uncertainty. Augmenting the LFR model by adding weighting functions, we get a generalized plant. And then, we design a mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller for the generalized plant. In order to design the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller, we use the LMI technique. To evaluate control performances and robust stability of the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller designed, we compare it with the $H_{\infty}$ controller through the simulation and experiment. In the result, with the fewer feedback information, the mixed $H_2/H_{\infty}$ controller shows the better control performances and robust stability than the $H_{\infty}$ controller in the sense of pendulum angle.

  • This paper presents methods to reduce the deflection of the battery-supporting structure on on-line electric vehicles (OLEVs). First, by testing various battery locations, a location is found that increases the dynamic stiffness of the OLEV. Second, static analysis is conducted to analyze the maximum deflection caused by the battery weight. In order to reduce the amount of deflection, the contributions of the battery-supporting structures are analyzed, and reinforcements are inserted. Then, another static analysis is conducted to compare the results of the base model and modified model. Consequently, through the static analysis, both the base model and modified model are similarly improved in terms of deflection, but the modified model is better than the base model at reducing the mass.

  • In this research, we have developed a ski-simulation system based on a physics-based simulation model using Newton's second law of motion. Key parameters of the model, which estimates skier's trajectory, speed and acceleration change due to skier's control on ski plate and posture changes, were derived from a field test study performed on real ski slope. Skier's posture and motion were measured by motion capture system composed of 13 high speed IR camera, and skier's control and pressure distribution on ski plate were measured by acceleration and pressure sensors attached on ski plate and ski boots. Developed ski-simulation model analyzes user's full body and center of mass using a depth camera(Microsoft Kinect) device in real time and provides feedback about force, velocity and acceleration for user. As a result, through the development of interactive ski-simulation motion recognition system, we accumulated experience and skills based on physics models for development of sports simulator.

  • Backlash in the actuator is one of the most important nonlinearities that limit the performance of speed and position control of mechanical systems. In this paper, we propose disturbance observers in order to estimate the effect of nonlinearities and cancel them subsequently. As a result the disturbance observers make the nonlinear system behave linearly. And finally we show that the disturbance observers guarantee the system robustness and the performance to reject the effect of backlash in the face of parameter uncertainties.
