  • A "two-fluid" model using thermal eddy diffusivity concept and Lumley's drag reduction theory, is proposed to analyze heat transfer of the turbulent dilute gas-particle flow in a vertical pipe with constant wall heat flux. The thermal eddy diffusivity is derived to be a function of the ratio of the heat capacity-density products .rho. over bar $C_{p}$ of the gaseous phase and the particulate phase and also of the ratio of thermal relaxation time scale to that of turbulence. The Lumley's theory dictates the variation of the viscous sublayer thickness depending on the particle loading ratio Z and the relative particle size $d_{p}$/D. At low loading ratio, the size of viscous sublayer thickness is important for suspension heat transfer, while at higher loading, the effect of the ratio .rho. $_{p}$ over bar $C_{p}$$_{p}$/ .rho. $_{f}$ over bar $C_{p}$$_{f}$ is dominant. The major cause of decrease in the suspension Nusselt number at lower loading ratio is found to be due to the increase of the viscous sublayer thickness caused by the suppression of turbulence near the wall by the presence of solid particles. Predicted Nusselt numbers using the present model are in satisfactory agreements with available experimental data both in pipe entrance and the fully developed regions.

  • This experimental study was conducted to figure out the characteristics of convective heat transfer in non boiling vertical downward flow with polymer additives. This experiment was studied in 26mm diameter, 800mm heating length and $1{\times}10^5W/m^2$ heat flux. The polymer concentration ranged from 0PPM to 500PPM with corresponding from Reynolds number $3.3{\times}10^4$ to $6.8{\times}10^4$ in non boiling vertical downward flow. Experimental results show that the characteristics of convective heat transfer was a strong function of polymer concentration and it has decreased with increasing the polymer concentration in non boiling vertical downward flow.

  • Numerical predictions of a fully developed turbulent flow through a square duct ($30mm{\times}30mm$) with twisted tape inserts and with twisted tape plus interrupted ribs are respectively conducted to investigate regionally averaged heat transfer and flow patterns. A rib height-to-channel hydraulic diameter(e/$D_h$) of 0.067 and a lengthto-hydraulic diameter(L/$D_h$) of 30 are considered at Reynolds number ranging 8,900 to 29,000. The interrupted ribs are axially arranged on the bottom wall. The twisted tape is 0.1 mm thick carbon steel sheet with diameter of 28 mm, length of 900 mm, and 2.5 turns. Each wall of the square channel is composed of isolated aluminum sections. Two heating conditions are investigated for test channels with twisted tape inserts and rib turbulators: (1) electric heat uniformly applied to four side walls of the square duct, and (2) electric heat uniformly applied to two opposite walls of the square channel. The results show that uneven surface heating enhances the heat transfer coefficient over uniform heating conditions, and significant improvements can be achieved with twisted tape inserts plus interrupted ribs.

  • Sealing of lubricant-air mixture in the high performance machining center is one of most the important characteristics to carry out enhanced lubrication. High speed spindle requires non-contact type of sealing mechanism. Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry. Velocity, pressure, turbulence intensity of profile is calculated to find more efficient geometry and variables. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle. The working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. It is more reasonable to simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication. Turbulence and compressible flow model are used to evaluate a flow characteristic. This paper considers a design effect of sealing capability of non- contact type seals for high speed spindle and analyzes leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage 7 on the same sealing area.

  • Evaluating an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. Flow is characterized into five categories according to its leakage path. Effect of geometry and leakage path are evaluated according to variation of sealing geometry. To simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication, the working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model were introduced in CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. This offers a methodological way of enhancement seal design for high speed spindle.

  • It is often assumed that the wave velocity at the bottom given by potential wave theory il the same as the wave velocity at the top of the turbulent boundary layer. This assumption is found to be the major cause of the error detected by recent elaborate theories and numerical models for the description of velocity profile near the sea bottom. A relationship is suggested between the potential velocity and the real boundary velocity. Based on this relation, the existing theories of Jonsson (1967) and Fredsoe (1984) are refined for the estimation of wave friction factor, and the computation results of the modified theories are favourably compared with the published laboratory results.

  • The phenomena of drag reduction using small quantities of a linear macromolecules has attracted the attention of experimental investigations. It is well known that drag reduction in single phase liquid flow is affected by polymer materials, molecular weight, polymer concentration, pipe diameter and flow velocity. But the research on drag reduction in two phase flow has not intensively investigated. Drag reduction can be applied to phase change system such as chemical reactor, pool and boiling flow, and to flow with cavitation which occurs pump impellers. The purpose of the present work is to evaluate the drag reduction by measuring pressure drop, mean liquid velocity, and turbulent intensity and determine the effects of polymer additives on drag reduction in horizontal two phase flow. Experimental results show higher drag reduction using co-polymer comparing with using polyacrylamide. Mean liquid velocities increase as adding more polymer, and turbulent intensities decrease as the distance for the wall in inversed.

  • In this paper, the author investigate viscous effects on the characteristics of TP620 hydrofoil. The pressure distribution on the foil section in non-cavitating flow should be considered its characteristics of displacement thickness due to viscous effects. Theoretical potential theory, which neglects viscous effects do not agree with this analysis, especially at leading edge region of the foil. And, the efficiency of TP620 hydrofoil considering viscous effects is a little lower than that of the foil, which neglected viscous effects.
