  • Two compounds were isolated from the root of Astragalus membranaceus(Bunge). On the basis of spectroscopic data their structures were identified as stigmast-4-en-3-one and a mixture of 2'-angeloyloxy-1',2'-dihydroxanthyletin and 2'-senecioyloxy-1',2'-dihydroxanthyletin. They were first isolated from the genus of Astragalus.

  • A new compound 2 and two known guaiane-type sesquiterpenoids were isolated from the methylene chloride-soluble fraction of the methanolic extract of the fruits of Torilis japonica (Umbelliferae) through repeated silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Their chemical structures were elucidated as torilin (1), 11-acetoxy-8-angeloyloxy-$1{\beta}$-hydroxy-4-guaien-3-one ($1{\beta}$-hydroxytorilin, 2), and 11-acetoxy-8-angeloyloxy-$1{\alpha}$-hydroxy-4-guaien-3-one ($1{\alpha}$-hydroxytorilin, 3) by spectroscopic analysis. Compounds 1-3 exhibited cytotoxicity against human A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, and HCT15 tumor cells.

  • Three new guaianolide type of sesquiterpene lactones, 8${\alpha}$-angeloyloxy-1${\alpha}$-hydroxy-3${\alpha}$,4${\alpha}$-epoxy-5${\alpha}$, 7${\alpha}$H-10(14), 11(13)-guaiadien-12,6${\alpha}$-olide (1), 8${\alpha}$-methylbutyryloxy-1${\alpha}$-hydroxy-3${\alpha}$, 4${\alpha}$-epoxy-5${\alpha}$, 7${\alpha}$H-10(14),11(13)-guaiadien-12,6${\alpha}$-olide (2), and 8${\alpha}$-isovaleryloxy-1${\alpha}$-hydroxy-3${\alpha}$, 4${\alpha}$-epoxy-5${\alpha}$, 7${\alpha}$H-10(14),11 (13)- guaiadien-12,6${\alpha}$-olide (3), together with six known sesquiterpenes, artemisolide (4), 3-methoxytanapartholide (5), deacetyllaurenobiolide (6), moxartenolide (7), arteminolide B (8), and arteminolide D (9) were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation using the NF-kB mediated reporter gene assay system.
