Spatial Information Transfer with a Stationary Coupling Wave in Rb Atoms

  • We report on the spatial information of a coupling laser transfer into a reflected probe laser; the transfer is achieved by means of electromagnetically induced transparency through a common excited state connected with $5S_{1/2}-5P_{1/2}(F=1{\rightarrow}F'=2)$ in the $^{87}Rb\;D_1$ line. When the coupling laser was spatially modulated as a stationary wave, the absorption of the probe laser was enhanced and the reflection of the probe laser was generated. When the coupling laser was spatially modulated by a mask, we observed that the reflection light of the probe laser was modulated as the shape of the mask. The Bragg reflection transferred the spatial information of the coupling laser. The reflection was approximately 7% of the incident power of the probe laser.

Low-loss Electrically Controllable Vertical Directional Couplers

  • We propose a nearly lossless, compact, electrically modulated vertical directional coupler, which is based on the controllable evanescent coupling in a previously proposed graphene-assisted total internal reflection (GA-FTIR) scheme. In the proposed device, two single-mode waveguides are separate by graphene-$SiO_2$-graphene layers. By changing the chemical potential of the graphene layers with a gate voltage, the coupling strength between the waveguides, and hence the coupling length of the directional coupler, is controlled. Therefore, for a properly chosen, fixed device length, when an input wave is launched into one of the waveguides, the ratio of their output powers can be controlled electrically. The operation of the proposed device is analyzed, with the dispersion relations calculated using a model of a one-dimensional slab waveguide. The supermodes in the coupled waveguide are calculated using the finite-element method to estimate the coupling length, realistic devices are designed, and their performance was confirmed using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed $3{\mu}m$ by $1{\mu}m$ device achieves an insertion loss of less than 0.11 dB, and a 24-dB extinction ratio between bar and cross states. The proposed low-loss device could enable integrated modulation of a strong optical signal, without thermal buildup.

  • A trisaccharide, 6d-Altro-Hepp$\alpha$ (1$\rightarrow$3) GlcNAc$\beta$ (1$\rightarrow$3) Gal$\alpha$ (1$\rightarrow$$OCH_2CH_2N_3$, as an O-antigenic repeating unit of Campylobacter jejuni serotypes O:23 and O:36, was synthesized. Coupling of the 6d-altro-Hepp$\alpha$ (1$\rightarrow$3) GlcNAc$\beta$ (1$\rightarrow$SEt donor with Gal$\alpha$ (1${\rightarrow}OCH_2CH_2Cl$ acceptor in the presence of NIS-TfOH promoter afforded the trisaccharide having the $\beta$ (1$\rightarrow$3) Gal linkage. $\beta$ -Stereospecificity and the desired regioselectivity for the 3-OH Gal are obtained. Subsequent hydrogenation, acetylation, azide displacement, hydrazinolysis, Nacetylation, and finally deacetylation furnished the title trisaccharide hapten for further glycoconjugation.

Piezoelectric and Dielectric Properties of Low Temperature Sintered Pb(Mn1/3Nb2/3)0.02(Ni1/3Nb2/30.12(ZrxTi1-x)0.86O3 System Ceramics

  • In this study, in order to develop compositions of ceramics suitable for piezoelectric actuator and ultrasonic vibrator applications using low temperature sintering, multilayer, PMN-PNN-PZT ceramics were fabricated using $Li_2CO_3$ and $Na_2CO_3$ as sintering aids. Their structural, piezoelectric and dielectric characteristics were investigated according to the Zr/Ti ratio. As the Zr/Ti ratio increased, the electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, and piezoelectric constant $d_{33}$ and the mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ all increased with Zr/Ti ratio and then decreased after the ratio exceeded 50/50. At the ratio of Zr/Ti =49/51 and sintering temperature of $900^{\circ}C$; the density, electromechanical coupling factor $k_p$, dielectric constant ${\varepsilon}_r$ piezoelectric $d_{33}$ constant and mechanical quality factor $Q_m$ all showed the optimum values of 7.900 $g/cm^3$, 0.576, 856, 312 pC/N, 1,326, respectively. These property values are very suitable for multilayer ceramics actuator applications.

  • It is important to predict the collision behavior of a train consist to improve its crashworthiness. To analyze crash behavior of train, four kinds of methods are mainly used so far. The first is method using multibody dynamics to predict the gross motion of the train set. The second uses 3D FE model to apply the section analysis method in order. The third is used to deduce design specification and evaluate the crashworhiness of a train by using 1D model. The last is to constitute 2D model to check overriding and coupling devices. The train evaluation procedures are so complex that it is difficult to understand or deal with. In this study, VTM for railway train was introduced to simplify the procedures. VTM involves 3D models, 1D models and dynamic components such as suspension and coupling. The method using hybrid concept model makes it possible to do all the things that are mentioned above. To analyze crash behavior tendency of VTM, the model was simulated and the simulation results were discussed.

  • We know that the piezoelectric constant d, the dielectric constant, and the electric-mechanical coupling coefficient affect the output for piezoelectric ceramics used in ultrasonic welders. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of ceramics according to the changes of additives to the components of PZT-PMN-PZW were examined. When the addition amount of $MnO_2$ was 2 wt%, the most excellent properties were shown, which suggested the applicability as a material for fusion welding.

Compact Branch-line Power Divider Using Connected Coupled-line Structure

  • In order to improve performance for the size of the BLPD, the CCL is used for the realization as the delay line. As realizing lower coupling coefficient and lower characteristic impedance, the CCL has good performance of the phase delay. The CCL is applied as the compact BLPD with optimized coupling factor and matched impedance because the lower coupling coefficient and lower characteristic impedance are increased the size and the loss, respectively. Designed BLPD using the CCL has the size of $0.13{\lambda}_g{\times}0.13{\lambda}_g$ and the size-reduction ratio of fabricated BLPD using the CCL has 58.5% ($21.08{\times}21.40mm^2$). Also, fabricated BLPD is measured the insertion loss of 3.16dB at the center frequency of 1.78GHz and the 20dB bandwidth is 9.58%. Differenced magnitude and phase between threw port and coupled port are measured 0.1dB and $89.9^{\circ}$, respectively. These performances are almost same compared with the conventional BLPD. Suggested application of the CCL can be used various devices and circuits for the size-reduction.

Design of the Modified Wilkinson Power Divider Using Coupling and Inductive Slit (결합 특성과 유도성 슬릿을 이용한 새로운 구조의 Wilkinson 전력분배기 설계)

  • In this paper, we have designed and fabricated a new type power divider to be efficient to a size and electrical performance by folding each quarter-wavelength 70.7 Ω section into a tightly-coupled "meander-line" and inserting a slit. In this type, because of coupling, the electrical phase of quarter -wavelength line and the performance change. For this reason, with the inductive slit and the tuning of quarter-wavelength line length, we have compensated for those. The inductance value of the inserted slit is decided by its width and depth, therefore, we could improve the electrical performance through optimization of inductance. Input and output return losses of the designed power divider were -34.2 dB, -34.3 dB respectively, and isolation was -36.7 dB at 1.75 GHz. Besides, a new design approach reduced occupied substrate area by 3:1 approximately.

Design of Inductive coupled wideband LC Balun Embedded Into Organic Substrate (유기기판에 내장된 인덕터의 커플링을 이용한 광대역 LC 발룬의 설계)

  • In this paper, inductive coupled LC balun has been desi gned and simulated for embedding into an organic packaging substrate. Inductive coupling method was applied to obtain wide band characteristics, and high dielectric film was utilized to reduce a size of the balun. The proposed balun has a novel scheme which consists of three embedded LC resonators with inductive coupling. This proposed balun has relatively small inductance and capacitance values which can be easily embedded into the organic packaging substrate. Furthermore, it has a good phase imbalance characteristic. The simulated results of proposed balun are an insertion loss of 1.2 dB, a return loss of 10 dB, a phase imbalance of 1 degree at frequency bandwidth of 750 MHz ranged from 1.8 GHz to 2.55 GHz, respectively. This balun has an area of $2mm{\tims}3.5mm{\times}0.66mm$ (height).
