  • To resolve the conservative requirements for clear headed-bar spacing in KBC 2016 and ACI 318-08, two 2/3-scale exterior beam-column connections were tested under cyclic seismic loading. The seismic tests primarily explored the effect on their seismic performance of using (a) small clear spacings and (b) multiple layers of headed reinforcements in the beam. Also, the previous test data were thoroughly analyzed. It was concluded that the clear bar spacing of 2db or the use of two bar layers might be permitted for headed reinforcements embedded in exterior beam-column connections.

  • Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) using zero valent iron (ZVI, $Fe^0$) is a promising technology for in-situ remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) forming dense non aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL). The objective of this study is to develop an enhanced treatment method of trichloroethylene-contaminated groundwater using ZVI packed bed with direct current (D.C.). A column experiment was performed to investigate degradation efficiency of TCE that was performed in three different combination of control (only sand), ZVI column (ZVI:sand, packing ratio 1:2(v/v)) and bipolar column (ZVI:sand=1:2(v/v) with electric current) in the test columns. As the results of this study, the degradation efficiency of TCE was improved with simultaneous application of both bipolar column compared to that used ZVI column. Because ZVI particles are isolated and individual particles act like small electrodes. In this experiment, it was indicated a basic material for application of bipolar packed bed as electro-PRBs that was effective degradation of TCE.

  • In this study, we evaluated the adsorption/desorption of uranium (U) in pure soil environment using continuous column reactor. We additionally investigated the adsorption/desorption mechanism of U on vivianite surface in molecular scale using quantum calculation. We observed that below $0.1{\mu}M$ of U was detected after 20 d from U injection ($1{\mu}M$) in adsorption test. However, all of absorbed U was detached from vivianite surface in 24 h by injection of CARB solution ($1.44{\times}10^{-2}M\;NaHCO_3$ and $2.8{\times}10^{-3}M\;Na_2CO_3$). Based on exchange energy calculation, we found that $UO_2(CO_3)_2{^{2-}}$ and $UO_2(CO_3)_3{^{4-}}$ species have higher repulsive energy than $UO_2(OH)_2$ species. The results obtained from this study could be applied to predict the behavior of uranium in contaminated and remediation sites.

  • The objective of this study is to clarify the seismic capacity and the characteristics in the hysteretic behavior of RC structures with non-seismic detailing. Interior and exterior beam-column subassemblages were selected from a ten-story RC building and six 1/3-scale specimens were constructed with three variables; (1) with and without slab, (2) with and without hoop bars in the joint region, (3) upward and downward direction of anchorage for the bottom bar in beams of exterior beam-column subassemblage. The test results have shown; (1) in case of interior beam-column subassemblage, there is no almost difference between nonseismic and seismic details in the strength and ductility capacity; (2) the Korean practice of anchorage (downward and 25 $d_{b}$ anchorage length) in the exterior joint caused the 10%∼20% reduction of strength and 27% reduction of ductility in comparison with the case of seismic details; and the existence of hoop bars in the joint region shows no effect in shear strain.

  • An explosion modeling technique was developed by using the spherical discrete element code, $PFC^{3D}$, which can be used to model the dynamic stress wave propagation phenomenon. The modeling technique is simply based on an idea that the explosion pressure should be applied to a $PFC^{3D}$ particle assembly not in the form of an external force (body force), but in the form of a contact force (surface force). A test blast was conducted for a RC column, whose dimension was $600\times300\times1800$ in millimeters. The initial velocities of the surface movements were measured to be in the range of $14\~18\;m/s$ with the initiation times of $1.5\~2.0m$. Then the blasting procedure was simulated by using the modeling technique. The particle assembly representing the concrete was made of cement mortar and coarse aggregates, whose mirco-properties were obtained from the calibration processes. As a result, the modeling technique developed in this study made it possible for the burden to move with the velocity of $17\~24\;m/s$, which are slightly higher values compared to those of the test blast.

  • Reactive metabolites generated by benzo(a)pyrene(BP) monooxygenase(AHH) interact with nucleophiles in DNA and cause mutation and carcinogenesis. We studied the effect of Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer, which induce epoxide hydratase(EH) activity without concomitant induction of AHH activity, on the binding of BP metabolites to DNA in uitro in Sprague Dawley rats. DNA-BP metabolite adducts can be resolved into at least five distinct peaks by elution of a Sephadex LH-20 column with a water methanol gradieNt. These peaks are arbitrarily designated A(most polar) through I(least polar). Of the 5 peaks tentatively assigned to 7,8 biol-9,10-oxide(A),7,8·oxide(B),4,5-oxide(C), and further metabolites of 9-OH-BP(D & E), peaks A, C, D, and I were reduced to 70, 85, 80, and 30% of controls, respectively, and there was no significant change in peak B. In connection with this DNA binding study, BP metabolizing enzymes including AHH, EH, demethylase(DM) activity and cyt. P-450 contents were also investigated in order to compare the BP treated control with ginseng and BP treated test groups. The results showed that the EH activity was increased by 139% over the BP control, the Cyt. P-450 content was increased by 180% over the control value, and DM and AHH activities were also increased to some degree for the BP test group, but there was no significant effect of the ginseng treatment.

  • We have prepared microcolumns made of stainless steel tubing, glass-lined stainless steel tubing, and silica-lined stainless steel tubing and examined their performances comparatively. The length of columns was fixed as 30 cm, and the I.D.'s, either 1 mm or 0.5 mm. Octadecyl bonded silica paticles $(5\mu)$ were used as the stationary phases. p-Nitroaniline, N,N-dimethyl-o-nitro-p-toluidine,and ethylbenzene were used as the test solutes. The glass-lined or silica-lined stainless steel columns showed better performances than the plain stainless steel column did. The number of theoretical plates over 10,000 were obtained even for the 0.5 mm I.D. (30 cm long) column as long as the glass-lined stainless steel tubing was used.

  • A tightened coupler with two way-threading is suggested to overcome the previous one-way threaded coupler. The experiment and a mock-up test were conducted to analyze the constructability of the suggested coupler. The aim of the mock-up test was to assemble the suggested coupler in horizontal rebar of mat footing and vertical rebar of semi-fabricated column bars. The method using the suggested coupler in semi-fabricated column bars is developed by analyzing the problem of fabricated column bars using the one-way threaded coupler. The result of the mock-up test showed that the time required to assemble the suggested coupler in the horizontal bars is shorter than it is for the one-way threaded coupler. In addition, the method using the suggested coupler in semi-fabricated column bars has advantages such as lower working loads, supporting safe work and strongly tightening the rebar. From these results, it is revealed that the suggested coupler is adequate to use in rebar work in terms of cost, quality and time.

  • The hydrodynamic performance of a floating-type OWC (Oscillating Water Column) chamber is studied numerically and experimentally in this study. The numerical approach based on two-dimensional linear theory of floating wave absorber was attempted to design an efficient wave energy absorber, while model test was performed in a wave basin to test a performance of designed model and validate the reliability of developed numerical code. The focus of study is placed mainly on the experimental study to evaluate the principal characteristics of the designed OWC chamber in regular waves. The effects of the variation of wave height on OWC device and of air pressure inside chamber are also presented. Finally, the measured results were compared with computed ones, and it was shown that the designed chamber works with high efficiency $(\eta_H>1$ over most of wave lengths covered by present study. It is therefore concluded that the developed code is capable of being successfully employed to design OWC chambers at various ocean environments, even though there exist some minor discrepancies between measured and computed results.

  • The global performance of the 5 MW OC4 semisubmersible floating wind turbine in random waves with or without steady/dynamic winds is numerically simulated by using the turbine-floater-mooring fully coupled dynamic analysis program FAST-CHARM3D in time domain. The numerical simulations are based on the complete second-order diffraction/radiation potential formulations along with nonlinear viscous-drag force estimations at the body's instantaneous position. The sensitivity of hull motions and mooring dynamics with varying wave-kinematics extrapolation methods above MWL(mean-water level) and column drag coefficients is investigated. The effects of steady and dynamic winds are also illustrated. When dynamic wind is added to the irregular waves, it additionally introduces low-frequency wind loading and aerodynamic damping. The numerically simulated results for the 5 MW OC4 semisubmersible floating wind turbine by FAST-CHARM3D are also extensively compared with the DeepCWind model-test results by Technip/NREL/UMaine. Those numerical-simulation results have good correlation with experimental results for all the cases considered.
