  • To determine the influence of vegetarian diet on serum lipoprotein, cholesterol and protein levels, 45 young Buddhist nuns (age: $20{\sim}34$ years) and 29 female students(age: $20{\sim}22$ years) were examined. Daily caloric intakes were 1,945 Kcal for the Buddhist nuns and 1,815 Kcal for the students. The ratio of% calorie of carbohydrate: protein: fat from total calories in the Buddhist nuns was 84:11:5 and that in the students was 70:15:15. The Buddhist nuns had significantly higher carbohydrate intake but markedly lower lipid intakes than the students. Anthropometric measurement showed that the Buddhist nuns had significantly higher values of body weight, skin-fold thickness, body surface area and obesity index than the students. Both systolic and diastolic pressures of the Buddhist nuns and students were similar. Serum levels of total lipid, cholesterol and proteins in the Buddhist nuns were not different from those of the students. However, when comparing the levels of high density lipoprotein (HDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) fractions, the Buddhist nuns had lower level of HDL but significantly higher LDL levels than the students. Furthermore, the Buddhist nuns had significantly lower levels of serum HDL-cholesterol but significantly higher LDL-cholesterol levels. There were significant correlations between LDL and LDL cholesterol (r=0.40), VLDL and VLDL-cholesterol(r=0.85), HDL and HDL-cholesterol(r=0.45), total serum lipid and total cholesterol (r=0.66) and total serum cholesterol and LDL(r=0.79). On the other hand, values of both serum total protein, and fractions of serum proteins were similar in the Buddhist nuns and students(ratio of albumin: ${\alpha}_{1}-:\;{\alpha}_{2}-:\;{\beta}-:\;{\gamma}-$globulins=55:3:10:13:19). Hematocrit and hemogloblin levels were similar in the Buddhist nuns and students. Above results suggest that vegetarian diets of the Buddhist nuns produced alterations in the metabolism of the lipoproteins and cholesterol.

  • The relationship between water and electrolyte metabolism, and dietary intake were studied in 45 healthy Buddhist nuns who were vegetarians aged 20-34, and 28 nursing students aged 20-22 who stayed at the dormitory of Kyungpook Medical School in the Fall, 1981. The Buddhist nuns obtained significantly higher carbohydrate and total caloric intakes but significantly lower protein and lipid intakes than the female students. The Buddhist nuns excreted significantly higher urine output($1,697{\pm}68\;ml/day$, p<0. 05) and lower osmolality ($616{\pm}18\;mOsm/kg\;H_2O$, p<0.05) than the students ($1,505{\pm}67\;ml/day$ and $688{\pm}36\;mOsm/kg\;H_2O$). However, both groups excreted similar amounts of urinary $Na^+$, $K^+$ and total osmolar contents. Free water clearance of the Buddhist nuns was higher(p<0.05) than that of the students but the osmolar clearance was about the same in the two groups. Daily urine output showed good correlation with Na output (r=0.76) and osmolar clearance but not with free water clearance. Both groups showed similar values of plasma concentration of creatinine, daily excretion of creatinine and clearance. Urinary excretion of urea for Buddhist nuns was 6.4 g/day, and was significantly higher than that of the students (5.1g/day).

  • This study was aimed to provide understanding on the eco-physiological response of barley tillers as affected by fertilizer application level. Yield and yield contribution rate of tillers were investigated with the data of field experiments in the former Wheat and Barley Research Institute of Suwon, Korea from September 1982 to July 1984. The 50% and 100% increased rates of fertilizer application were compared to the local recommendation, which is 120 - 90 - 70kg /ha for N-P$_2$O$_{5}$-K$_2$O, to examine tiller dynamics under diverse fertilization scheme. With the increased rates, more mainstem leaves appeared and more effective tillers resulted from C3, 4P, 41, 2P1 and 3PP. Higher number and yield of grains per plant were also observed in the increased rates, though the number of grains and grain yield per ear were slightly lower than the recommended rate. The order of yield contribution by various tillers with the recommended rate and 50% increment was mainstem, 1, 2, 11, 3, 21, 12, 22, 4 and C, but 1 and 11 contributed more than mainstem and 3 with the 100% increased rate.e.

  • Two experiments were conducted to observe the effects of direct fed microbials on metabolic characteristics in sheep and milking performance in dairy cows. A metabolic trial with four ruminally cannulated sheep(60±6kg) was conducted in a 4×4 Latin square design to investigate the supplementation effects of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Clostridium butyricum or mixed microbes of S. cerevisiae and C. butyricum on ruminal fermentation characteristics and whole tract digestibility. Sheep were fed 1.25 kg of total mixed ration(TMR, DM basis) supplemented with S. cerevisiae (2.5g/day), C. butyricum (1.0g/day) or its mixture(S. cerevisiae 1.25g/day+C. butyricum 1g/day), twice daily in an equal volume. But control sheep were fed only TMR. A feeding trial with 28 lactating Holstein cattle was also conducted for 12 weeks to investigate the effects of the same microbial supplements as for the metabolic trial on milking performance. The cows were fed the TMR(control), and fed S. cerevisiae(50g/day), C. butyricum(15g/day) or its mixture (S. cerevisiae 25g/day + C. butyricum 7.5g/day) with upper layer dressing method. Total VFA concentration and the digestibility of whole digestive tract in the sheep increased by supplementation of S. cerevisiae, C. butyricum or their combined microbials compare to control group. The proportion of propionic acid at 1h(P<0.039) and 3h(P<0.022) decreased by supplementation of S. cerevisiae while tended to increase acetic acid proportion at the same times. Daily dry matter intake(DMI) was not influenced by the microbial treatments, but milk yield(P<0.031) and feed efficiency(milk yield/DMI, P<0.043) were higher for the cow received C. butyricum than those for other treatments. The milk fat content was higher (P<0.085) when cows fed S. cerevisiae(4.11%) than that fed the control (4.08%), the diets with C. butyricum (3.85%) and the microbial mixture. Based on the results obtained from the current experiments, supplementation of C. butyricum or mixture with S. cerevisiae might be increased milk fat content and milk productivity of lactating daily cows. • Present study was carried out to estimate phenotypic and genetic parameters influencing body weight (BW) at 4 weeks of age egg breadth (EB), egg length(EL), egg shape index (SI) and egg weight (EW) at 32 weeks of age and egg numbers (EN) up to 38 weeks of age in broiler male and female lines. The data were collected from closed White Plymouth Rock (female line; G) and Cornish (male line; C) flocks involving 1193 pullets from 211 dams and 48 sires in 1982. The results obtained are summarized as follow: 1. General performance for various trails of lines C and G. The means and standard deviations of BW, EB, EL, SI, EW and EN were 668.34${\pm}$47.18, 4.23${\pm}$0,11, 5.49 ${\pm}$0.19, 77.06${\pm}$2.98, 55.73${\pm}$3.54 and 59.72${\pm}$13.39 in line C, respectively and 487.89${\pm}$ 41.43, 4.22${\pm}$0.11, 5.51${\pm}$0.19, 76.72${\pm}$3.20, 55.43${\pm}$3.26 and 76.93${\pm}$12.17 in line G, respectively. 2. Heritability Heritabilities were estimated from sire, dam and combined components. Estimates for BW, EB, EL, SI, EW and EN from combined components were 0.30, 0.29, 0,40, 0.22, 0.45 and 0.60 in line C, respectively and 0.33, 0.23, 0.28, 0.13, 0.49 and. 0.33 in line G, respectively. 3. Correlation Genetic and phenotypic correlations showed similar trend in line C and G. Genetic correlations, estimated EW with EB and EL, were high and positive (line C; 0.99, 0.75, respectively and line G; 0.94, 0.82, respectively), also correlation of EB with EL was 0.58 (both lines; 0.58). High and negative genetic correlations were shown between SI and EL in line C and G (-0.70, -0.65, respectively). Genetic correlations between SI and EW were relatively low and negative in line C and G (-0.11, -0.19, respectively) and between SI and EN were relatively low and positive in line C and G (0.25, 0.17, respectively). Between other traits, low genetic correlations were shown in both lines, High and positive correlation was estimated between hatchability and egg shape index and polynomial regression of egg shape index on hatchability was estimated; Y=-216.77+7.6216X-0.0146939X$^2$.

  • Mulberry plants (Morus alba L.) were grown in pots with the following different nitrogen sources: ammonium sulphate, urea, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate + ammonium nitrate ($NO_3:NH_4$=2:1), and sodium nitrate. The effects of the nitrogen sources on mulberry yields, nitrogen recovery, distribution of ions and cation-anion balance (C-A) along leaf sequence and growth stage were investigated. The results were as follows: 1. Leaf yields and nitrogen recovery decreased with increasing $NO_3$-N application rates. 2. Relative cation contents in leaves in the early growth stages showed the following pattern : Na < Mg < Ca < K. However, the order of Ca and K reversed in the later stages. The order of anion contents chifted from $SO_4$ < $NO_3$ < Cl < $H_2PO_4$ in the early stages to $NO_3$ < Cl < $SO_4$ < $H_2PO_4$ in the later stages. 3. Contents of K, $H_2PO_4$, $SO_4$, $NO_3$, T-N and the sum of anion contents (${\sum}A$) were higher in upper leaves whereas Ca, Mg, Cl, the sum of cation contents (${\sum}C$) and (C-A) were higher in lower leaves. 4. When $NO_3$ in leaves decreased, Cl and K as counter-cations increased and consequently Ca decreased. 5. The (C-A) in leaves varied with leaf sequence and growth stage from 700 to 900 me/kg D.M.

  • An attempt to determine the optimum levels of P and K fertilizers application for Tong-il lines (indica${\times}$Japonica) was made with the data obtained from the farm fields during 1976 to 1979. The detailed interpretation to obtains relationships between fertilizer recommendation of P and K with their balance with Ca and Mg contents in soil were made using yield data obtained in 1977. The results were summarized as follows : 1. The optimum rates of P and K fertilizer application varied with the kinds of paddy soils showing the ranges of 6.6-11.4 kg/10a for P (as $P_2O_5$) and 7.0-11.3 kg/10a for K (as $K_2O$). The amounts of optimum fertilizers increased in the order of unmatured soil, normal soil, sandy soil, saline soil, poorly drained soil for P, and unmatured soil, poorly drained soil, sandy soil, normal soil, saline soil for K. 2. The yield increment at the optimum levels of P and K in comparison with no fertilizer application were 3,5-7.5% for P and 2.1-9.1% for K. The effectiveness of P was greatest in the unmatured soils and that of K was greatest in the poorly drained soils, and in the saline soil, that of P and K was relatively high. 3. According to relationship between relative yield index and soil testing value, the critical $P_2O_5$ contents which showed the yield response in soil were about 100 ppm for normal soil and 200ppm for sandy soil. That of exchangeable K/Ka+Mg ratio in soil were about 0.08 for normal paddy soil and over 0.08 for sandy soil, and those for poorly drained soils were not obtained in the ranged below 0.08. 4. The regression equations of fertilizer recommendation for different soils were obtained between the available $P_2O_5$ in soil or ratio of K to base including Ca and Mg in soil (x) and the amount (Y) of P and K fertilizers applied. The equations for phosphorus recommendation were Y=11.27C-0.048x for normal paddy soil and Y=13.383-0.061x for sandy soil, and those for potassium recommendation were Y=9.526-0.569x for normal paddy soil, Y=11.727-1.004x for sandy soil, and Y=12.574-0.558x for poorly drained soil, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to select the most effective extractant for Cd analysis in the condition of Korean paddy soil. The various extractants were compared with 0.1 N-HCL common extractant used in Korea. Soil and rice samples were collected at same plot from paddy field adjacent to zinc mining sites. The results ob.tained are as follows. 1. The extractants were able to be arranged in order of higher extractability of cadmium content; 1N-HCL > 0.1N-HCL > 0.075N-Mixture > $1N-NH_4OAC(pH4.8)$ > $DTPA-CaCl_2$ > 5% Acetic acid> $1N-NH_4OAC(pH7.0)$ > $1N-NH_4NO_3$. 2. Although all extractants showed highly significant correlation between Cd content in soil and that in brown rice, $1N-NH_4OAC(pH7.0)$ was considered to be best. 3. The relationship between Cd concentration in soil by extractants and that in brown rice was varied depending on the levels of total Cd content and soil texture. 4. The best extractant under the soil corntions such as total Cd contents and soil texture believed to be $1N-NH_4OAC(pH7.0)$ but Cd concentration extracted in soil was low. 5. The extractant of 0.075N-Mixture was found to be a recommendable one, because it was simillar to 0.1N-HCL in extracting capacity and showed the better correlation between Cd content in soil and brown rice compared to the latter.

  • The results of study on the yield and absorption of N and K applied to the chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis) which was grown at comparatively infertile red-yellow soil in the fall of 1980 are summerized as below. 1. The optimum quantities of potash to be applied for the autumn chinese cabbage is suggested in the range of 15kg-20kg/10a, $K_2O$. 2. Combined treatments of N and K showed a positive interaction by promoting the effect of the other element. The increase of Nitrogen absorption from the additionally applied 10kgs of nitrogen on top of 15kg N/10a showed only 16 per cent at potash minus plot, while that of potash applied plot showed 60 per cent. The cabbage yield increase therefor, at high rate of nitrogen only was 1,700kgs per 10 are over low rate of nitrogen, while high nitrogen plus potash treatment produced additional 2,200kgs over the low rates of N and K. 3. Additional 10kgs of nitrogen applied on top of 15kgs N/10a resulted in increasing soil potassium uptake; 4kgs of soil potassium was additionally absorbed at potash applied plot and 6.5kgs at potash minus plot. 4. Utilization of applied potash was greater at low rates of N, and K application (each 15kgs of N and $K_2O$ per 10a) where 77 per cent of applied potash was utilized, while high rates of N and K application (each 25kgs of N and $K_2O$ per 10a) showed 44 per cent of potash utilization rate. Lower utilization of applied potash at high rate of nitrogen application is due probably to greater uptake of soil potassium. 5. N and K contents in the chinese cabbage are 0.17-0.20% and 0.35-0.43% respectively and these were not statistically correlated with the yields.
