  • This study analyzed fashion taste changes for middle-aged men (40-50s) from the 1960s-1980s through newspapers evaluated as socially influential media. As a result, the fashion interest of middle-aged men in the 1960s was very low, and the formation and selection of fashion taste was mainly decided by the wife. However, as the interest in fashion and fashion gradually increased in the 1970s, the interest and taste of fashion in middle-aged men started to change. In the 1980s, social equality and women's advancement into society began, and initiated the appearance of a youthful-looking casual style and establishing an individual subjectivity about fashion taste. Based on this, the specificity of the change of fashion taste among Korean middle-aged men in the 1960s-1980s were as follows. First, the changes in the aesthetic sense of middle-aged men and the increase of fashion interest were due to changes in socio-cultural appearance standards. Second, there was an increase in the pursuit of individuality due to the weakening of fashion consciousness as a collective norm. Third, there were change in subjectivity about fashion taste and consumption.

  • This study has analyzed the situation and space structure of Chungcheong Region using the variables of land prices. The total amount of land prices of Chungcheon Region was 950 trillion KRW as of December 2013, showing that it has increased by 6.46 times compared to 147 trillion KRW of 1980, which was the time of initial analysis. As a result of analyzing the dynamic changes in the region based on the land prices from 1980 through 2013, there were significant changes in the space structures only in the 1980s. The analysis of centrality based on the land prices of Chungcheong Region has shown that the center of Chungcheong Region was to the northeast of Sejong City in the 1980s and moved to the right with the rise in the land prices of Daejeon Region. The standard deviation of distance showed concentration around Daejeon entering the 1990s from the 1980s, and almost no concentration has been found after that.

  • This study investigates the relationship between the Korean temperature and the atmospheric circulation such as Arctic Oscillation, Siberian High and Aleutian Low during the winter (December-January) for the period of 1970-2011. It is found that all indices to represent aforementioned circulations are significantly correlated with Korean winter temperature for the period of 1970 - 2011. There are marked contrasts in such relationship, however, before and after the mid-1980s when a significant regime shift of Korean winter temperature occurred. While Korean winter temperature has a close relationship with Arctic Oscillation after the mid-1980s, its relationship with Siberian High and Aleutian Low is weakened. The composite analysis between a positive and negative phase of Arctic Oscillation before and after the mid-1980s is conducted to examine a recent strengthening of Arctic Oscillation-Korean winter temperature relationship. It is found that the structural changes of low-level wind and the geopotential height at 500 hPa between the two phases of Arctic Oscillation are more effective to influence Korean winter temperature after the mid-1980s. This may induce a close relationship between the Korean winter temperature variability and Arctic Oscillation after the mid-1980s compared to before the mid-1980s.

  • This paper examines the advertisements for mass-produced women's clothing, which appeared in the 1980s issues of the fashion magazine Wolganmeot. This study explores the communicative aspect of fashion advertisements of the 1980s as a platform for complex and dynamic interactions between fashion brands, female consumers, and the rapidly changing social, cultural, and economic conditions of the period. The research focuses on advertisements in the formal and character casual categories that targeted young, urban, and career-seeking women. Based on the analysis of the visual and textual elements of the advertisements from a pragmatics perspective, this paper concludes that fashion brands sought to highlight an 'intelligent', 'urban', and 'individualistic' image of women. It also proposes that the prevalence of assertive and straightforward textual elements, copies, indicates the efforts of fashion brands to stabilize and reinforce the advertising messages in the fast-evolving landscapes of the fashion industry and changing consumption habits.

  • DPR Korea has been creating cropland across the country due to its chronic food shortage. Cropland was about 17.4% at the end of the 1980s, but it increased steadily to 19.6% at the end of the 1990s, 24.8% at the end of the first decade of 2000s, and 25.4% at the end of the 2010s. On the other hand, the forest land declined from about 74.8% in the late 1980s to 69.5% in the late 2010s. Urbanization is also progressing, increasing from about 1.15% at the end of the 1980s to 1.68% at the end of the 2010s. Most of the deforestation that occurred in DPR Korea was caused by conversion to cropland. These characteristics of land cover changes in DPR Korea provide useful information and implications for international and inter-Korean cooperation for DPR Korea.
