Survival benefit of neoadjuvant FOLFIRINOX for patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer

  • Backgrounds/Aims: While patients with borderline resectable pancreatic cancer (BRPC) are a target population for neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), formal guidelines for neoadjuvant therapy are lacking. We assessed the perioperative and oncological outcomes in patients with BRPC undergoing NAC with FOLFIRINOX for patients undergoing upfront surgery (US). Methods: The AHPBA criteria for borderline resectability and/or a CA19-9 level > 100 µ/mL defined borderline resectable tumors retrieved from a prospectively populated institutional registry from 2007 to 2020. The primary outcome was overall survival (OS) at 1 and 3 years. A Cox Proportional Hazard model based on intention to treat was used. A receiver-operator characteristics (ROC) curve was constructed to assess the discriminatory capability of the use of CA19-9 > 100 µ/mL to predict resectability and mortality. Results: Forty BRPC patients underwent NAC, while 46 underwent US. The median OS with NAC was 19.8 months (interquartile range [IQR], 10.3-44.24) vs. 10.6 months (IQR, 6.37-17.6) with US. At 1 year, 70% of the NAC group and 41.3% of the US group survived (p = 0.008). At 3 years, 42.5 % of the NAC group and 10.9% of the US group survived (p = 0.001). NAC significantly reduced the hazard of death (adjusted hazard ratio, 0.20; 95% confidence interval, 0.07-0.54; p = 0.001). CA19-9 > 100 µ/mL showed poor discrimination in predicting mortality, but was a moderate predictor of resectability. Conclusions: We found a survival benefit of NAC with FOLFIRINOX for BRPC. Greater pre-treatment of CA19-9 and multivessel involvement on initial imaging were associated with progression of the disease following NAC.

Effect of Water Temperature and Stocking Density on Growth of Juvenile Red Drum Sciaenops ocellatus (사육수온과 밀도가 홍민어 Sciaenops ocellatus의 성장에 미치는 영향)

  • Fed on commercial flounder diet at 20, 23 and $26^{\circ}C$ in semiclosed culture system for 32 weeks, the juvenile red drum (1.2 g) showed linear increase in daily feeding rate (DFR), growth (g/fish) and specific growth rate (SGR) with increasing temperature. In the second experimental series, the young red drum (214 g), cultured at densities of 2.16, 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ in flow-through tanks at water temperatures from 12.3 to $27.2^{\circ}C$ for 25 weeks, grew faster at the stocking density of 2.16 kg/$m^3$ than at the densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ the difference in growth observed at the stocking densities of 4.24 and 6.40 kg/$m^3$ was not significant. The DFR and SGR were also significantly higher for the density group of 2.16 kg/$m^3$. Briefly, growth of the red drum increased with increasing tested range of temperature and was also faster with decreasing stocking density. However, the total growth (g/tank) increased with increasing stocking density.

Effect of Cysteine and Glutathione on Motility Index and Morphology in Human Spermatozoa (Cysteine 및 Glutathione이 사람정자의 운동성지수와 정자형태에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of the cysteine and glutathione on the motility index and morphology of human spermatozoa at the sperm processing in vitro. After treating the sperm with medium containing cysteine and glutathione, we measured the motility index and morphology at 0.5 h and 24 h. 1. Following the sperm culture for 0.5 h after treating the sperm with the medium containing 0, 1, 5, 10 mM cysteine, curvilinear velocity (VCL) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in control than that in all treatments. And straight-line velocity (VSL) was high at 1 mM and average path velocity (VAP) was low at 5 mM and 10 mM. But the motility (MOT) and morphology (NOM) were not different between control and all treatments. Following the sperm culture for 24 h, the MOT was significantly high in treatment groups (58.9, 74.4 and 62.3%), compared with that in control(28.7%) and the VCL was also high in treatment groups (31.4, 37.9, and 34.0 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s), compared with that in control (21.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s). The VSL (18.4, 21.7, and 18.9 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s) was significantly higher than control (10.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s) and the VAP (20.3, 24.7, and 21.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s) in treatments was also compared with that in control (12.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s). The NOM was not difference between control and treatments. 2 Following the sperm culture for 0.5 after treating the sperm with the medium containing 0, 1, 5, 10 mM glutathione, the MOT, VCL, VSL, VAP, and NOM were not different between control and treatments. Following the sperm culture for 24 h, the MOT was higher in treatment groups (82.9, 83.6, 83.4%) than in control (51.1%) and the VCL was higher in treatment groups (50.9, 51.3, and 49.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s) than control (34.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s). The VSL was also higher in treatment (17.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s) and the VAP was also higher in treatment groups (30.1, 32.5, and 29.7 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s) than in control (19.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/s). The NOM was not different between control and treatments.

Analysis of the Work Breakdown Structure and Cost-Rate for Small Interior Works in Apartment (아파트 소규모 인테리어공사의 공종별 분류와 보할의 분석)

  • The research, based on 200 cases of small interior works in6 different floor area types of apartment in Busan, intended to compare the architectural work with the breakdown structure and analyze the cost of general small-scale interior work, by work type. The outcome of the research is outlined as follows. (1) Given the cost of small interior works for apartmentsranges from 10 million to 15 million won, which correspond to apartments ranging in size from $79.2m^2$ (24PY) to $105.6m^2$, it is necessary to implement a cost analysis for material cost and labor cost for these two types. (2) Given that small interior work for apartments comprises mostly finishing work, unlike the categoriesof general architectural work, it is more reasonable to classify the works into 9 categories,which include embellishment, wood, tile, paint, metal, toilet, sink & furniture, electric & mechanical and other works, instead of the 22 divisions stipulated in the Korean Architectural Standard Specification. (3) After reviewing the average cost of small interior work and rate by floor area, it was found thatthe average cost of 24PY was 10.5 million won, of which metal work accounts for 12.8%, embellishment work 17.8%, and toilet 19.7%, while sink & furniture appeared to be the highest with 22.1%, while for 32PY, average cost was 12.5 million won,which comprises 7.4% wood work, sink & furniture 20.2%, toilet 23.4% and embellishment work the highest at 28.6%, indicating that embellishment work accounts for the greater portion.

Improving of the Fishing Gear and Development of the Automatic Operation System in the Anchovy Boat Seine-III -Underwater Geometry of the Prototype Net- (기선권현망어업의 어구 개량과 자동화 조업시스템 개발-III - 실물어구의 수중형상 -)

  • A prototype experiment on the anchovy boat seine was carried out in the southern sea of korea to analyze the vertical opening and the underwater geometry. The vertical opening and the underwater geometry of the prototype net were determined by distance of Minilog position with the combinations of the distance between paired boats and the towing speed. The results osbtained can be summarized as follows; 1. Vertical opening of the protype net was gradually lowered according to the increase of the distance between paired beats and the towing speed. 2. Vertical opening of Wing net, Inside wing net, Square, Fore bag net, Flapper and After bag net of the prototype net according to the distance between paired boats were varied in the range of 8.4~9.0, 15.7~17.4, 12.9~17.9, 13.6~19.0, 8.3~8.4, 11.1~14.7m respectively, varied in the range of 12~16, 22~24, 27~38, 59~83, 92~93, 41~54% of the normal opening respectively. 3. Vertical opening of Wing net, In side wing net, Square, Fore bag net, Flapper and After bag net of the prototype net according to the towing speed were varied in the range of 7.7~10.5, 19.6~21.6, 12.2~16.9, 15.4~17.1, 8.0~8.2, 13.7~14.7m respectively, varied in the range of 14~19, 27~30, 32~36, 67~74, 89~91, 51~54% of the normal opening respectively. 4. Prototype net was appeared apparent the pocket shape, because Wing net and Inside wing net was opened 20% of the normal opening. 5. Working depth of the prototype net was gradually shallow according to the increase of the distance between paired boats and the towing speed.

Effect of Phosphate, Amino Acid, and BSA on in vitro Development of Mammalian Embryo in Chemically Defined Culture Medium (한정 배양액에서 포유동물 수정란의 체외 발생에 인, 아미노산 및 BSA가 미치는 영향)

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of phosphate, aimno acid, and BSA on in vitro development of mammalian embryos. In vitro-matured and -fertilized(IVM/IVF) bovine embryos were cultured in simple, chemically defined, protein-free medium(mTLP-PVA0. When the phosphate concentration of mTLP-PVA supplemented with 19 amino acid were adjusted to 0.0, 0.10, 0.35, 1.05 and 2.10mM by the concentration of sodium phoshpate, there were no significant different in development ability of IVM/IVF bovine embryos cultured in the medium containing from 0.00 to 1.05mM phosphate until 48 hours post-insemination, However, proportion of embryos developing to $$8-cell and morula at 96 and 144 hours post- insemination, respectively, was significantly increased in the medium with o.35 mM phosphate(p<0.05). There was significant difference between O.10(18%)-0.35(24%)mM phosphate and 1.05(13%)-2.10(1%)mM phosphate in supporting development to blastocyst(p<0.05). When IVM/IVF bovine embryos were cultured in the medium supplemented with 19 amino acids, significant different was observed in the proporton of embryos reaching $$8-cell(49-50%), morula(38-40%) and blastocyst (29-32%) stages at 96, 144, and 192 hours post-insemination, respectively(p<0.05). Glutamine alone had no benefit on embryo development. When BSA was added to mTLP-PVA with 0.35mM phosphate, glutamine and 19 amino acids at 8, 48, 120 hours post-insemination, BSA significantly enhanced the development ability ofb embryos reaching $$2-cell (74-77%), $$8-cell (49-53%), morula(43-47%), and blastocyst(38-42%) stages at 48, 96, 144, and 192 hours post-insemination, respectively, regardless of the time of BSA addition.

Sustainability Considerations and Satisfaction with Online Food-Delivery Services During Covid-19 Pandemic

  • Purpose: Motivated by an expedited growth and distribution of Online Food-Delivery (OFD) services, especially during the recent Covid-19 pandemic, this research aims to explore 1) how consumers' sustainability considerations are associated with satisfaction with the services via opt-out cutlery options and 2) the role of the pandemic in the relationships between sustainability considerations, attitudes toward opt-out cutlery options, and satisfaction with the OFD services. Data and Methodology: An analysis of survey data using 434 consumers in the United States recruited from Amazon M-Turk was conducted using structural equation modeling. Results: Findings suggest that consumers' environmental, health, and ethical considerations are positively related to their attitudes toward opt-out cutlery options. Furthermore, attitudes toward opt-out cutlery options are positively related to satisfaction with the OFD services only when they feel connected with the environment, driven by perceived threats of an infectious disease (i.e. Covid-19). Conclusion: The study findings provide new insights to managers in the OFD service industry on how to promote sustainable consumption during the pandemic.

The Circulation in Kwang Yang Bay (광양만의 해수유동에 관하여)

  • A series of physical oceanographic investigations of the circulation in the Kwang Bay' were carried out seven times from May 1974 to May 1975 every other month. The average water transports through the southern entrance of the' Kwang Yang Bay were approximately $1,014{\times}I0^6m^3$/half-tide in ebb current and $278{\times}10^6m^3$$405.6{\times}I0^6m^34/half-tide in ebb current, and $282{\times}10^6m^3 $/half-tide in flood current, at the maximum current intensity. The water from Seomjin River flows into the bay at an annual average rate of $84{\times}I0^6m^3$/half-tide, the rate being fluctuated from month to month from $6.0\times}10^6m^3 $to $11. 5{\times}I0^6m^3 $per half-tide.

Structural Analysis of Multi-Functional Fishway in Seomoon Weir (서문보의 다기능 어도의 구조해석)

  • In this study, the field applicability of the recently constructed multifunctional fishway in Seomunbo, Yeongcheon-si, and Gyeongsangbuk-do were examined. The analysis variables were R/C slab (S1) and R/C+S/C slab (S2), the underground passage standard areas (width × length) were 1.4 m × 0.2 m, 1.4 m × 0.3 m, and 1.4 m × 0.6 m, and the flow velocities were 0.8, 1.2, and 1.6 m/s. As a result of the analysis, the safety of the design of Seomunbo was evaluated. The analysis showed compared to the Seomoon Weir fishway, the maximum stress of S2 decreased by 24 - 32%, the bending moment of the underground passage decreased by 16 - 33%, the maximum stress of the sidewall decreased by 20 - 36%. In addition, the bending moment of the upper slab decreased by 17 - 33%, the maximum stress of the upper slab decreased by 9 - 28%, and the bending moment decreased by 19 - 33%. Complementation was required in the following percentages: 18% and 14% for the maximum stress and bending moment of the underground passage, respectively, 15% and 17% for the maximum sidewall stress and bending moment, respectively, and 11% and 16% for the upper slab maximum stress and bending moment, respectively. The results showed that S2 was superior to that of the Seomoon Weir fishway, and the underground passage size of 1.4 m × 0.3 m was superior to those of 1.4 m × 0.2 m and 1.4 m × 0.6 m, and R/C+S/C slab was superior to that of R/C slab. The findings are expected to be useful for constructing and designing the multifunctional fishway.

Two New Correlations for Predicting Detonating Power of CHNO Explosives

  • For CHNO explosives, two new correlations of the form $P_{CJ}\;=\;8.7({\alpha}T_c')^{1/2}{\rho}_0^2-5\;and\;P_{CJ}\'=\'9.5({\alpha}T_c')^1/2{\rho}_0^2-9$ have been demonstrated, which relate detonation pressure, $P_{CJ}$; combustion temperature of the explosive in gas phase, $T_c$; combustion temperature of the explosive in crystalline state, $T_c'$; and the number of moles of gaseous products per unit weight of explosive, α; at initial density of the explosive, ${\rho}_0$. Experimental and semi-empirical PM3 procedures were used for the computation of $T_c$. Detonation pressures derived in this manner have a simple form without need to use computer code.
