  • The purpose of this research was to develop a low Ni austenitic cast iron through replacing Ni by Cu and Mn because they are cheaper than Ni. The effect of the Cu content (6-12 wt%) on the microstructure characteristics was investigated in Fe-3%C-16%(Ni+Cu+Mn) cast iron. Contrary to general effect of the Cu on cast iron, the result of the microstructure analysis indicated that bainite and cementite were formed in high Cu content (>8 wt%Cu). A crystallized Cu-solution (Cu-Mn) phase and MnS in the Cu-solution were formed. The quantity of those phases increased as the Cu content increased. Consequently, the high Cu content in the composition ratio (Ni+Cu+Mn=16%) caused the formation of Cu-Mn/MnS and those phases decreased the effect of Cu and Mn on austenite formation. For this reason, bainite and cementite were formed in high Cu content.

  • The high-temperature material properties of steel are very important to the fire resistance analysis of high-strength bolt connections. This paper reports on the results of the experimental studies on the high-temperature properties of 20 MnTiB steel which is widely used in high-strength bolts, and the friction coefficient of 16Mn steel plates at elevated temperature which is a necessary parameter for bolted frictional connection analysis. The test data includes yield strength, limit strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation and expansion coefficient of 20MnTiB steel at elevated temperature, and the friction coefficients between two 16Mn steel plates under elevated temperatures and after cooling. Based on the data from the tests, the mathematical models for predicting the mechanical properties of 20MnTiB steel and friction coefficients of 16Mn steel plates have been established.

  • Dielectric properties were investigated at Mn doped 0.17($Ba_{0.53}$, $Pb_{0.47}$)0-$0.16Nd_2O_3$-$0.67TiO_2$ system in microwave frequency. It was observed that dielectric constant of 90.1, quality factor of 1320 (at 3.8GHz) and temperature coefficient of resonance frequency 2.3 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ for 0.5wt% Mn doped 0.17($Ba_{0.53}$, $Pb_{0.47}$)0-$0.16Nd_2O_3$-$0.67TiO_2$ system in sintering condition $1290^{\circ}C$/2hr. The quality factor increase due to the compensation effect of Mn ions yp to 0.5wt% and the decrease due to the interface relaxation effect. The temperature coefficient of resonance frequency increases to negative direction with increasing the amounts of Mn.

  • The heterobimetallic anion, (OC)5CrMn(CO)5-M+ (M+=Na+, PPN+), which has a donor-acceptor metal-metal bond1, was reacted with allyl bromide to yield BrCr(CO)5- and Mn(CO)5(CH2CHCH2). The reaction mechanism has been proposed in terms of the consecutive reaction pathway in which Cr(CO)5(THF) is an important intermediate leading to the corresponding product. Counterion effect on this reaction was also evaluated and the results were compared with those of the corresponding reaction of the mononuclear carbonyl anion, Mn(CO)5-.

  • In this study, the fracture toughness $K_{IC}$ of high performance concrete (HPC) was investigated by conducting three-point bending tests on a total of 240 notched beams of $500mm{\times}100mm{\times}100mm$ subjected to heating temperatures up to $450^{\circ}C$ with exposure times up to 16 hours and various heating and cooling rates. For a heating rate of $3^{\circ}C/min$, $K_{IC}$ for the hot concrete sustained a monotonic decrease trend with the increasing heating temperature and exposure time, from $1.389MN/m^{1.5}$ at room temperature to $0.942MN/m^{1.5}$ at $450^{\circ}C$ for 4-hour exposure time, $0.906MN/m^{1.5}$ for 8-hour exposure time and $0.866MN/m^{1.5}$ for 16-hour exposure time. For the cold concrete, $K_{IC}$ sustained a two-stage decrease trend, dropping slowly with the heating temperature up to $150^{\circ}C$ and then rapidly down to $0.869MN/m^{1.5}$ at $450^{\circ}C$ for 4-hour exposure time, $0.812MN/m^{1.5}$ for 8-hour exposure time and $0.771MN/m^{1.5}$ for 16-hour exposure time. In general, the $K_{IC}$ values for the hot concrete up to $200^{\circ}C$ were larger than those for the cold concrete, and an inverse trend was observed thereafter. The increase in heating rate slightly decreased $K_{IC}$, and at $450^{\circ}C$ $K_{IC}$ decreased from $0.893MN/m^{1.5}$ for $1^{\circ}C/min$ to $0.839MN/m^{1.5}$ for $10^{\circ}C/min$ for the hot concrete and from $0.792MN/m^{1.5}$ for $1^{\circ}C/min$ to $0.743MN/m^{1.5}$ for $10^{\circ}C/min$ for the cold concrete after an exposure time of 16 hours. The increase in cooling rate also slightly decreased $K_{IC}$, and at $450^{\circ}C$ $K_{IC}$ decreased from $0.771MN/m^{1.5}$ for slow cooling to $0.739MN/m^{1.5}$ for fast cooling after an exposure time of 16 hours. The fracture energy-based fracture toughness $K_{IC}$' was also assessed, and similar decrease trends with the heating temperature and exposure time existed for both hot and cold concretes. The relationships of two fracture toughness parameters with the weight loss and the modulus of rapture were also evaluated.

  • Mn doped ZnO films were prepared on Si (100) substrates using sol-gel method. The prepared films were annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for decomposition and oxidation of the precursors. XRD analysis revealed the presence of ZnMnO hexagonal wurtzite phase along with the presence of small quantity of $ZnMn_2O_3$ secondary phase and poor crystalline nature. The 2D, 3D views of magnetic domains and domain profiles were obtained using magnetic force microscopy at room temperature. Rectangular shaped domains with an average size of 4.16 nm were observed. Magnetic moment measurement as a function of magnetic field was measured using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry at room temperature. The result showed the ferromagnetic hysteresis loop with a curie temperature higher than 300 K.

  • Effects of doping rare earth element on Ln site of $Ln_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ (Ln=Nd, Sm and La) were examined from sintering behavior, structure and magnetic properties. Sintering reactions proceeded rapidly in order of $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3>Nd_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3>Sm_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$. This result can be explained by diffusivity of metal cation. Size of a-axis increased as following order of La$Nd_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$, 93K for $Sm_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ and 225K for $La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_3$ were obtained. This result coincides with change of Mn-O bond length causing by a-axis lattice constant.

  • We have investigated the Mn concentration-dependent structural, optical, magnetic properties in IV-VI diluted magnetic semiconductor $Si_{1-x}Mn_xTe_{1.5} $ crystals prepared by the vertical Bridgman technique. X-ray studies showed the single crystalline hexagonal crystal structure. From the optical absorption measurements energy band gap were found to decreases with increasing x and temperature. From the magnetization measurements the samples had ferromagnetic ordering with Curie temperature $T_C$ about 80 K. With increasing Mn concentration, the average magnetic moments per Mn atom determined from the saturated magnetization increased.

  • This study reports on Co/$Co_2$MnSn two-phase magnets. The Co/$Co_2$MnSn two-phase magnet has Co precipitates in a $Co_2MnSn$ Heusler alloy matrix, in which the two phases are exchange-coupled at the phase boundary. The as-casted Co/$Co_2$MnSn system, which has Co-Mn solid solution precipitates in a $Co_2$MnSn Heusler alloy matrix, showed that the Co solid solution precipitates are crystallographically coherent and there is exchange coupling at the phase boundary. To form pure Co precipitates by removal of Mn solute atoms in Co-Mn solid solution, annealing was carried out 48 hours at $870^{\circ}C$. After annealing, the low $T_c$ and low magnetization phase of the Co-Mn solid solution became a high $T_c$ and high magnetization phase of hexagonal Co.
