  • This paper explores different vibration control strategies for the cancellation of human-induced vibration on a structure with time-varying modal parameters. The main motivation of this study is a lively urban stress-ribbon footbridge (Pedro $G\acute{o}mez$ Bosque, Valladolid, Spain) that, after a whole-year monitoring, several natural frequencies within the band of interest (normal paring frequency range) have been tracked. The most perceptible vibration mode of the structure at approximately 1.8 Hz changes up to 20%. In order to find a solution for this real case, this paper takes the annual modal parameter estimates (approx. 14000 estimations) of this mode and designs three control strategies: a) a tuned mass damper (TMD) tuned to the most-repeated modal properties of the aforementioned mode, b) two semi-active TMD strategies, one with an on-off control law for the TMD damping, and other with frequency and damping tuned by updating the damper force. All strategies have been carefully compared considering two structure models: a) only the aforementioned mode and b) all the other tracked modes. The results have been compared considering human-induced vibrations and have helped the authors on making a decision of the most advisable strategy to be practically implemented.

  • A cadmium-binding protein was purified the cell-free extract of extreme cadmium tolerant Hansenula anomala B-7. The molecular weight was determined to be approximately 33, 000 and was composed two kinds of subunits having a molecular weight of 18, 000 and 14, 000, respectively. The extinction coefficient of the cadmium-binding protein was calculated to be 19.58. The amount of cadmium in the cadmium-binding protein was $9.26{\mu}{\textrm{g}}$ per $100{\mu}{\textrm{g}}$ of protein. A total of 14 amino acids were detected in the cadmium-binding protein, including aspartic acid, glycine and alanine that were present in a high quantity, but proline, valine and methionine were not found. The purified cadmium-binding protein contained a high quantity of cysteine and cadmium, and therefore this protein showed clearly the characteristics of metallothionein.

  • In this paper, RS coded DTMF modulation for reliable data transmission over mobile fading channels is considered. The circuits of (15,9) RS codec are proposed and synthesized, and the performances are evaluated over fading channels. The codec circuits take about 14000 gates standardized by 2-input NAMD gate. The (15,9) RS coded DTMF signalling provides theoretical coding gain more than 20 dB over fading channels for BER 10.6, the criterion for data transmissions in mobile communications such as IMT-2000. Thus, It is very effective to apply RS codec to DTMF signalling for data transmission in mobile communications over fading channels.

  • Approximately 80% of water used in urban areas reappears as municipal wastewater (MWW). Reclamation of MWW is an attractive proposition under the present scenario of water stressed cities in India. In this paper, we attempted to reclaim MWW using lab-scale hollow- fiber (HF) membrane modules for possible reuse in non-potable applications. Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficiency of virgin HF ($M_1$) and modified HF ($M_2$) modules. The $M_2$ module consists of HF modified with a skin layer formed through interfacial polymerization of m-phenylenediamine with trimesoyl chloride (MPD-TMC). The molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of $M_1$ was 44000 g/mol and that of $M_2$ 10000 -14000 g/mol on the basis of rejection of polyethylene glycol. The combination of $M_1$ and $M_2$ modules was able to reduce concentrations of most of the pollutants in sewage and improved the treated water quality to the acceptable limits for non potable reuse applications. It is found that about 98-99% of the initial flux is recovered by the backwashing process, which was approximately two times in a month when operated continuously.
