  • Horse fat was extracted from fatty horse meat at $70^{\circ}C$ under vacuum conditions. The oxidative stability of horse fat was investigated by the addition of 0, 30, 60, and 150 mg/kg of ${\alpha}$-, ${\gamma}$-, or ${\delta}$-tocopherol during storage of 14 days at $65^{\circ}C$ in the dark. Changes of tocopherol concentration and fatty acid composition, peroxide value, and 2-thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value were analyzed during storage. The levels of the added tocopherols were found to decrease during storage. Unsaturated fatty acids contents of horse fat without tocopherol decreased from 60.87% to 57.22% after 14 days. The peroxide value and TBA value increased as storage time increased. The peroxide values of horse fat after addition of 0, 30, 60, and 150 mg/kg of ${\gamma}$-tocopherol were 43.75, 25.17, 20.87, and 15.41 meq/kg, respectively, and the TBA values were 7.87, 5.64, 4.43, and 4.23 mg malonaldehyde (MA)/kg, respectively, after 14 days. At the concentration of 150 mg/kg, both ${\gamma}$- and ${\delta}$-tocopherol impeded the oxidation of horse fat during storage.

  • The quantitative knowledge of N $O_{\gamma}$ (=N $O_{x}$ +HN $O_3$+/PAN+N $O_3$$N_2$ $O_{5}$ +HN $O_2$+N $O_3$$^{-10}$ +organic nitrates+......)distribution is essential in tropospheric chemistry, especially, especially that related to understanding the processes leading to ozone production. Ambient concentrations of NO, N $O_2$, HN $O_3$ and PAN as well as total N $O_{\gamma}$ were measured during June and early July 1992 at a rural site(Candor, NC), in the central Piedmont region of NC. The measurements of N $O_{\gamma}$ species were made in an effort to provide a comprehensive understanding of nitrogen chemistry and to investigate the total nitrogen budget at the site. N $O_{\gamma}$, N $O_2$, and NO showed diurnal variations with maxima in the morning. The maximum N $O_{\gamma}$ concentration reached was 14.5 ppbv, and the maximum concentrations of NO and N $O_2$ were 5.4 and 7.8 PPbv, respectively. The mean N $O_{\gamma}$ concentration as found to be 2.88$\pm$1.58 ppbv(n=743). The mean concentrations of NO and N $O_2$, were found to be 0.15 $\pm$ 0.29 ppbv(n=785) and 1.31 $\pm$ 0.99 ppbv(n=769). Products of photochemical oxidants, (N <$O_{\gamma}$-N $O_{x}$ ), such as HN $O_3$ and PAN, as well as ozone showed diurnal variation with maxima in the afternoon and minima at night The fractions of individual reactive nitrogen species to total N $O_{\gamma}$ were investigated and contrasted to the results from remote marine site and rural continental sites. N $O_{x}$ was the major species to total N $O_{\gamma}$(45%). NO concentrations appeared to be nearly constant whether the Prevailing winds were from continental areas or from oceanic areas. Linear regression of $O_3$ with (N $O_{\gamma}$- N $O_{x}$ )/N $O_{\gamma}$ (i.e. percent N $O_{x}$ converted to the photochemical products of N $O_{\gamma}$) yielded ( $O_3$) =25.8 〔 N $O_{\gamma}$-N $O_{x}$ 〕/(N $O_{\gamma}$) +27, ( $r^{2}$=0.58). The regression intercept is interpreted as the ozone back ground (intercept=27ppbv) and the slope suggests that 8.6 molecules of ozone are formed per molecule of N $O_{x}$ oxidized products (when the average N $O_{\gamma}$ concentration, about 3 ppbv at the site, is used). The N $O_{x}$ N $O_{\gamma}$ ratio was used as an indicator of the chemical age of airmasses and the ratio showed strong positive correlations with HN $O_3$( $r^{2}$=0.58), PAN ( $r^{2}$=0.46) and $O_3$( $r^{2}$=0.62). Larger N $O_{\gamma}$ and N $O_{x}$ N $O_{\gamma}$ ratio were found when winds came from continental sides. It may suggest that synoptic meteorological conditions and transport of N $O_{x}$ are important in the distribution of N $O_{\gamma}$ and its relationship with photochemical oxidants at the site.

  • A transformat Alcaligence eutrophus GA5 harboring phbC gene from A. latus was cultivated for production of Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-4-hydroxybutyrate)[P(3HB-4HB)] containing high molar fraction of 4-hydroxybutyrate(4HB)] containing high molar fraction of 4-hydroxybutyrate(4HB). Transformation did not influenced significantly on total cell growth, on total cell growth, concentration, and content of P(3HB-4HB), however, significantly influenced on 4HB molar fraction in P(3HB-4HB) increasing from 12.3 to 23.5 mol% after 48 h cultivation in two-stage using 1.0%(W/V) of ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone as a precursor compare to parent strain. Above increment may be due to the accelerated polymerization between 3HB and 4HB converted from precusor compound by amplified phbC gene. Citrate increased remarkbly total cell mass and P(3HB-4HB) concentration, but did not influenced on the molar fraction of 4HB, meanwhile, magnesium ion influenced on P(3HB-4HB) concentration and 4HB molar fraction significantly. The two-stage cultivation method was modified, in such a way minimizing P(3HB) accumulated inside of cell grown at first-stage, consquently, 26.3% of P(3HB-4HB) containing 61.0 mol% of 4HB fraction was obtained after 72hr. Furthermore, semi-homopolymeric P(4HB) containing 92.0 mol% of 4Hb was obtained, and its structure was confirmed by $^1$H-NMR.

  • Magnetohydrodynamics(MHD) dynamo depends on many factors such as viscosity ${\gamma}$, magnetic diffusivity ${\eta}$, magnetic Reynolds number $Re_M$, external driving source, or magnetic Prandtl number $Pr_M$. $Pr_M$, the ratio of ${\gamma}$ to ${\eta}$ (for example, galaxy ${\sim}10^{14}$), plays an important role in small scale dynamo. With the high PrM, conductivity effect becomes very important in small scale regime between the viscous scale ($k_{\gamma}{\sim}Re^{3/4}k_fk_f$:forcing scale) and resistivity scale ($k_{\eta}{\sim}PrM^{1/2}k_{\gamma}$). Since ${\eta}$ is very small, the balance of local energy transport due to the advection term and nonlocal energy transfer decides the magnetic energy spectra. Beyond the viscous scale, the stretched magnetic field (magnetic tension in Lorentz force) transfers the magnetic energy, which is originally from the kinetic energy, back to the kinetic eddies leading to the extension of the viscous scale. This repeated process eventually decides the energy spectrum of the coupled momentum and magnetic induction equation. However, the evolving profile does not follow Kolmogorov's -3/5 law. The spectra of EV (${\sim}k^{-4}$) and EM (${\sim}k^0$ or $k^{-1}$) in high $Pr_M$ have been reported, but our recent simulation results show a little different scaling law ($E_V{\sim}k^{-3}-k^{-4}$, $EM{\sim}k^{-1/2}-k^{-1}$). We show the results and explain the reason.

  • Excellent thermal neutron absorption performance of boron expands the potential use of boron rich slag to prepare epoxy resin matrix nuclear shielding composites. However, shielding attenuation behaviors and mechanism of the composites against gamma rays are unclear. Based on the radiation protection theory, Phy-X/PSD, XCOM, and 60Co gamma ray source were integrated to obtain the shielding parameters of boron rich slag/epoxy resin composites at 0.015-15 MeV, which include mass attenuation coefficient (µt), linear attenuation coefficient (µ), half value thickness layer (HVL), electron density (Neff), effective atomic number (Zeff), exposure buildup factor (EBF) and exposure absorption buildup factor (EABF).µt, µ, HVL, Neff, Zeff, EBF and EABF are 0.02-7 cm2/g, 0.04-17 cm-1, 0.045-20 cm, 5-14, 3 × 1023-8 × 1023 electron/g, 0-2000, and 0-3500. Shielding performance is BS4, BS3, BS3, BS1 in descending order, but worse than ordinary concrete. µ and HVL of BS1-BS4 for 60Co gamma ray is 0.095-0.110 cm-1 and 6.3-7.2 cm. Shielding mechanism is main interactions for attenuation gamma ray by BS1-BS4 are elements with higher content or higher atomic number via Photoelectric Absorption at low energy range, and elements with higher content via Compton Scattering and Pair Production in Nuclear Field at middle and higher energy range.

  • This study was performed to determine the optimal composition of Cheonggukjang added with garlic. The experiment utilized a central composite design (CCD). The evaluation was carried out by means of response surface methodology (RSM), which included 18 experimental points with three independent variables : the content of the garlic (1.3~9.7%, $X_1$), the steaming time of garlic (0~15.1 min, $X_2$), and the fermentation time of Cheonggukjang (48.2~71.8 h, $X_3$). The viscous substance ($Y_1$), acidity ($Y_2$), amino-type nitrogen ($Y_3$), ${\gamma}$-GTP activity ($Y_4$) and ABTS radical scavenging activity ($Y_5$). were assessed in four replicates with five dependent variables. The maximum content of the viscous substance was 13.02% at 6.53% ($X_1$), 6.81 min ($X_2$) and 55.18 h ($X_3$). The acidity was increased when the fermentation time was longer, and the minimum acidity point was 0.50% at 7.75% ($X_1$), 3.42 min ($X_2$) and 58.60 h ($X_3$), respectively. The content of the amino-type nitrogen at the experimental range studied was was 80.58~158.82 mg%, and the stationary point was at saddle point. Using ridge analysis, the maximum point was 156.97 mg% at 6.21% ($X_1$), 14.85 min ($X_2$) and 58.04 h($X_3$). The optimum conditions of ${\gamma}$-GTP activity was 5.73% ($X_1$), 6.99 min ($X_2$) and 57.96 h($X_3$), respectively, at the maximum point was 353.66 mU/mL. The maximum point of ABTS radical scavenging activity was 76.43% at 3.78% ($X_1$), 14.28 min ($X_2$) and 57.99 h($X_3$) at the saddle point, when the garlic steaming time was longer.

  • Although it is agreed that the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) invoke highly relativistic jets with bulk Lorentz factors of a few hundreds, the exact physical mechanism producing such powerful gamma-rays still remains debated. Three outstanding and important questions in the field concern (1) the composition of GRB jets (i.e., matter-dominated vs Poynting-flux-dominated), (2) the involved radiative process responsible for the observed gamma-rays (i.e., synchrotron mechanism vs photospheric radiation), and (3) the distance of the emitting region from the central engine where the prompt gamma-rays are released (i.e., ~10^12 cm vs 10^14 cm vs 10^16 cm). I will present recent important breakthroughs that we have made, which answer these three questions.

  • The gamma-ray dose rates in air at 233 locations in Korea have been determined. The contribution to the gamma-ray dose rates in air due to the presence of $^{232}Th-series,\;^{238}U-series\;and\;^{40}K$ is as follows: 47.3% $(36\;nGyh^{-1})\;^{232}Th-series$ 14.5% $(11\;nGyh^{-1})\;^{238}U-series$ and 38.2% $(29\;nGyh^{-1})\;^{40}K$. The mean gamma-ray dose rate theoretically derived from $^{232}Th-series,\;^{238}U-series\;and\;^{40}K\;was\;76{\pm}17\;nGyh^{-1}$. This corresponds to an annual effective dose of $410\;{\mu}Sv$ and an annual collective dose of 18900 person-Sv for all provinces under study. The results have been compared with other global radiation dose.

  • There is considerable evidence that ionizing radiation (IR) mediates checkpoint control, repair and cell death. In this study, we have used a high density microarray hybridization approach to characterize the transcriptional response of human breast carcinoma MCF-7 cell line to ${\gamma}$-radiation, such as 4 Gy 4 hr, 8 Gy 4 hr, and 8 Gy 12 hr. We found that exposure to ${\gamma}$-ray alters by at least a $log_2$ factor of 1.0 the expression of 115 known genes. Of the 66 genes affected by ${\gamma}$-radiation, 49 are down-regulated. In our results, the cellular response to irradiation includes induction of the c-jun and EGR1 early response genes. The present work has examined potential cytoplasmic signaling cascades that transduce IR-induced signals to the nucleus. 40S ribosomal protein s6 kinase modulates the activities of the mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and c-Jun $NH_2$-terminal kinase (JNK1) cascades in human monocytic leukemia (U937/pREP4) cells. 14-3-3 family members are dimeric phosphoserine -binding proteins that participate in signal transduction and checkpoint control pathways.
