In this paper, we study the problem to fit a piecewise-quadratic polynomial curve to points in the plane. The curve consists of quadratic polynomial segments and two points are connected by a segment. But it passes through a subset of points, and for the points not to be passed, the error between the curve and the points is estimated in $L^{\infty}$ metric. We consider two optimization problems for the above problem. One is to reduce the number of segments of the curve, given the allowed error, and the other is to reduce the error between the curve and the points, while the curve has the number of segments less than or equal to the given integer. For the number n of given points, we propose $O(n^2)$ algorithm for the former problem and $O(n^3)$ algorithm for the latter.
Focusing on both small separations and baryonic acoustic oscillation scales, the cosmic evolution of the clustering properties of peak, void, wall, and filament-type critical points is measured using two-point correlation functions in ΛCDM dark matter simulations as a function of their relative rarity. A qualitative comparison to the corresponding theory for Gaussian random fields allows us to understand the following observed features: (i) the appearance of an exclusion zone at small separation, whose size depends both on rarity and signature (i.e. the number of negative eigenvalues) of the critical points involved; (ii) the amplification of the baryonic acoustic oscillation bump with rarity and its reversal for cross-correlations involving negatively biased critical points; (iii) the orientation-dependent small-separation divergence of the cross-correlations of peaks and filaments (respectively voids and walls) that reflects the relative loci of such points in the filament's (respectively wall's) eigenframe. The (cross-) correlations involving the most non-linear critical points (peaks, voids) display significant variation with redshift, while those involving less non-linear critical points seem mostly insensitive to redshift evolution, which should prove advantageous to model. The ratios of distances to the maxima of the peak-to-wall and peak-to-void over that of the peak-to-filament cross-correlation are ~2-√~2 and ~3-√~3WJ, respectively, which could be interpreted as the cosmic crystal being on average close to a cubic lattice. The insensitivity to redshift evolution suggests that the absolute and relative clustering of critical points could become a topologically robust alternative to standard clustering techniques when analysing upcoming surveys such as Euclid or Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST).
The fused LASSO signal approximator (FLSA) can be applied to find change points from the data having piecewise constant mean structure. It is well-known that the FLSA is inconsistent in change points detection. This inconsistency is due to a total-variation denoising penalty of the FLSA. ℓ1 trend filter, one of the popular tools for finding an underlying trend from data, can be used to identify change points of piecewise linear trends. Since the ℓ1 trend filter applies the sum of absolute values of slope differences, it can be inconsistent for change points recovery as the FLSA. However, there are few studies on the inconsistency of the ℓ1 trend filtering. In this paper, we demonstrate the inconsistency of the ℓ1 trend filtering with a numerical study.

The Tohoku Earthquake, which hit Japan on March 11, 2011, was a massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake, with the earthquake itself causing damage and the resulting tsunami additionally causing enormous material and human damage. The crustal deformation at that time reached a maximum of 5.24 m in Japan, Neighboring countries South Korea and China as well as the Southeast Asian region also witnessed crustal deformation ranging from a few centimeters to a few meters. The detailed analysis in this study based on data from 72 of the sites in South Korea where GNSS CORS was installed showed that South Korea underwent heterogeneous crustal deformation from the Tohoku earthquake, with a maximum of 55.5 mm, a minimum of 9.2 mm, and an average of 22.42 mm. A crustal deformation model was developed, applied, and evaluated for accuracy in this study for a prompt revision of the survey results of the control points that were changed by the crustal deformation. The survey results were revised by applying a crustal deformation model to the 1,195 unified control points installed in South Korea prior to the Tohoku earthquake. The comparison of these 1,195 points with their new survey results showed that the RMSE decreased from 14.1 to 3.4 mm and that the maximum result difference declined from 39 to 10 mm. Revision of the survey results of the control points using the crustal deformation model is deemed very useful considering that the accuracy of the survey results of the unified control points in South Korea is 3 cm.

Comprehensive bans on tobacco advertising and promotion were introduced through tobacco control legislation in Viet Nam, but it has been established that violations of the bans are very common. This study was conducted to explore the trend in violations of bans on tobacco advertising and promotion at points of sale in Viet Nam in the past six years and to explore any differences in the violation situations before and after the Law on Tobacco Control came into effect on 1st May 2013. Quantitative data were collected through observation of violations of the bans on tobacco advertising and promotion at points of sale in 10 provinces throughout Viet Nam in four survey rounds (2009, 2010, 2011, and 2015). Variation in violation prevalence over time was examined by chi-square test using a Bonferini method. Binary logistic regression was employed to identify the factors that may have influences on different types of violation. A level of significance of p<0.05 was used for all tests in this article. The most common form of violation was the display of more than one pack/one carton of a cigarette brand. Violation of bans on tobacco advertising increased while violations on promotion ban and on displaying tobacco decreased through time. Some factors associated with the tobacco advertising and promotion bans included surveyed years, types of points of sale, regions and areas where the points of sale were located. The enforcement of the bans did not improve even after the issuance and the enactment of the Law on Tobacco Control. This suggests that the monitoring and enforcement of bans on tobacco advertising and promotion at points of sale should be strengthened. Penalties should be strictly applied for violators as indicated in the current tobacco control legislation.

Objectives: This study aimed to validate the effectiveness of a recently proposed difficulty index for removal of impacted mandibular third molars based on extraction time and suggest a modified difficulty index including the presence of pathologic conditions associated with third molars. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 65 male patients younger than 25 years with third molars. Extraction time was calculated from start of the incision to the last suture. The difficulty scores for third molars were based on spatial relationship (1-5 points), depth (1-4 points), and ramus relationship (1-3 points) using cone-beam computed tomography. The difficulty index was defined as follows: I (3-4 points), II (5-7 points), III (8-10 points), and IV (11-12 points). The modified difficulty score was calculated by adding one point to the difficulty score if the third molar was associated with a pathologic condition. Two modified difficulty indices, based on the presence of pathologic conditions, were as follows: the half-level up difficulty index (HDI) and the one-level up difficulty index (ODI) from the recently proposed difficulty index. Results: The correlations between extraction time and difficulty index and or modified difficulty indices were significant (P<0.001). The correlation coefficient between extraction time and difficulty index was 0.584. The correlation coefficients between extraction time and HDI and ODI were 0.728 and 0.764, respectively. Conclusion: Extraction time of impacted third molars exhibited a moderate correlation with difficulty index and was strongly correlated with the modified indices. Considering the clinical implications, the difficulty index of surgical extraction should take into consideration the pathologic conditions associated with third molars.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The Dietary Reference Intakes for Koreans (KDRIs), a set of reference intake values, have served as a basis for guiding a balanced diet that promotes health and prevents disease in the general Korean population. In the process of developing DRIs, a systematic review has played an important role in helping the DRI committees make evidence-based and transparent decisions for updating the next DRIs. Thus, the 2015 KDRI steering committee applied the systematic review framework to the revision process of the KDRIs. The purpose of this article is to summarize the revision process for the 2015 KDRIs by focusing on the systematic review framework. MATERIALS/METHODS: The methods used to develop the systematic review framework for 2015 KDRIs followed the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Tufts Evidence-based Practice Center. The framework for systematic review of the 2015 KDRIs comprised of the 3 following steps: (1) development of an analytic framework and refinement of key questions and search terms; (2) literature search and data extraction; and, (3) appraisal of the literature and summarizing the results. RESULTS: A total of 203,237 studies were retrieved through the above procedure, with 2,324 of these studies included in the analysis. General information, main results, comments of reviewers, and results of quality assessment were extracted and organized by study design. The average points of quality appraisals were 3.0 (range, 0-5) points for intervention, 6.1 (0-9) points for cohort, 6.0 (3-9) points for nested case-control, 5.4 (1-8) points for case-control, 14.6 (0-22) points for cross-sectional studies, and 7.0 (0-11) points for reviews. CONCLUSIONS: Systematic review helped to establish the 2015 KDRIs as a useful tool for evidence-based approach. Collaborative efforts to improve the framework for systematic review should be continued for future KDRIs.
This study was conducted to examine middle and high school students' knowledge level of first aid, health promotion, and safety. Data were collected from 1.165 students from March 6, 2000 to April 4, 2000. The results of this study are summarized as follows. 1. 80.1% of the respondents felt the necessity of first aid. The sources of information about methods of first aid were school (43.9%), mass media (15.6%), and self-study (10.5%). 30.0% of them never learned the methods of first aid. 2. In the case of obtaining information on first aid through mass media, 58.2% of them got it from TV. 7.3% of them obtained it from magazines, while 5.8% of them got it from newspapers. According to their viewpoints of adequate time to teach the methods of first aid, 38.6% of them thought that the methods had to be taught in the primary school and 25.2% of them thought that they had to be taught in the kindergarten. 24.9% of them replied that the methods had to be taught in the middle school, while 11.3% of them replied that they had to be taught in the high school. 3. The points for knowledge of first aid were 98.29:t20.91 on the basis of 150 points (65.5 points on the basis of 100 points). The points showed significant differences in the variables of sex, education level, numbers of siblings, parents' education level, and guardian's occupation.
Purpose: To evaluate the results in patients who received total elbow replacement for posttraumatic destroyed or unreduced elbow joint. Materials and Methods: Six patients with posttraumatic destroyed, or unreduced elbow joint, who were nearly impossible to move actively and had pain and grossly unstable joint, were followed up average 42 months. 3 cases were soft tissue injuries and bone defects which were caused by severe comminuted fracture, 1 was a nonunion with comminuted fracture, and 2 were unreduced elbow joint. Total elbow replacement was performed average 10 months after the injury. All the cases were used by semiconstrained prosthesis, and the results were estimated by Mayo elbow perfomance score. Results: Pain was decreased in all the cases postoperatively. Average ranges of motion were improved with active extension 20° and flexion 120°. Mayo elbow performance scores were pain 42.5 points, range of motion 17.5 points, stability 8.3 points, function 19.2 points and totally 87.5 points, and final results were 3 excellent and 3 good. Loosening of prosthesis was not found in all the cases by final follow-up radiograph. Conclusicon: Semiconstrained TER can be used as a effective treatment improving pain and active ranges of motion caused by posttraumatic destroyed or unreduced elbow joint, however, long term follow-up is needed because early loosening of TER can be occurred due to severe bone defects.
This Paper extracts the edge of main components of face with Gator wavelets transformation in facial expression images. FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) clustering algorithm then extracts the representative feature points of low dimensionality from the edge extracted in neutral face. The feature-points of the neutral face is used as a template to extract the feature-points of facial expression images. To match point to Point feature points on an expression face against each feature point on a neutral face, it consists of two steps using a dynamic linking model, which are called the coarse mapping and the fine mapping. This paper presents an automatic extraction of feature-points by dynamic linking model based on Gabor wavelets and fuzzy C-means(FCM) algorithm. The result of this study was applied to extract features automatically in facial expression recognition based on dimension[1].
