  • Major issues in water supply service have changed from expansion of service area to improvement of service quality, i.e., water quality and safety, and early response to emergency situation. This change in the service concept triggers the perceptions of limitation with the current centralized water supply system and of necessities of decentralized (distributed) water supply system (DWSS), which can make up the limitations. DWSS can reduce the possibility of water supply outage by establishing multiple barriers such as emergency water supply system, and secure better water quality by locating treatment facilities neighboring consumers. On the other hand, fluctuation of water demand will be increased due to the reduced supply area, which makes difficult to promptly respond the fluctuating demand. In order to supplement this, hybrid water supply system was proposed, which combined DWSS with conventional water supply system using distributing reservoir to secure the stability of water supply. The Optimal connection point of DWSS to existing water supply network in urban area was determined by simulating a supply network using EPANET. Optimal location of decentralized water treatment plant (or connection point) is a nodal point where changes in pressure at other nodal points can be minimized. At the same time, the optimal point should be selected to minimize hydraulic retention time in supply network (water age) to secure proper water quality. In order to locate the point where these two criteria are satisfied optimally, Distance measure method, one of multi-criteria decision making was employed to integrate the two results having different dimensions. This methodology can be used as an efficient decision-support criterion for the location of treatment plant in decentralized water supply system.

  • The present study is about an efficient extraction of tunnel cross sections from huge point cloud achieved by a terrestrial laser scanner. A method, using a hash-based data structure, is introduced, by which point clouds, potentially composing cross sections, are extracted along a tunnel center line. The center line is estimated by linking points which are drawn in the middle of pseudo cross sections based on the hash-based data structure. Point clouds of a same thickness are extracted at a same interval along the center line. In result, it took less than 3 seconds and 124 MB of memory to extract, out of the 7.5 million points, the point clouds of 1 m interval and 0.1 m thickness. A manual operation, however, was needed to fix the outliers on the center line and to select both start and end points on it.

  • Our aim in this paper is to give some new proofs to fixed point theorems due to Abdou [1] for mappings satisfying Reich type contractions in modular metric spaces. We removed the restriction that ω satisfies the ∆2-type condition imposed on the results of [1]. Furthermore, Lemma 2.6 of [1] which was crucial in the proofs of the results of [1] is not needed in the proofs of our results. Our method of proof is simpler and interesting.

  • Point estimate method has a less accuracy than Monte Carlo simulation that is usually considered as an exact probabilistic method, but this method still remains popular in probability-based reliability assessment in geotechnical and rock engineering, because it significantly reduce the number of sampling points and produces the statistical moments of a performance function in a reasonable accuracy. In the present study, we investigated the accuracy and applicability of point estimate methods proposed by Rosenblueth and Zhou & Nowak by comparing the results of these two methods with those of Monte Carlo simulations. The comparison was carried out for the problem of a lined circular tunnel in an elastic medium where an closed-form analytical solution is given. The comparison results showed that despite the non-linearity of the analytical solution, the statistical moments calculated by the point estimate methods and the Monte Carlo simulations agreed well with an average error of roughly 1-2%. This average error demonstrates the applicability of the two point estimate methods for the probabilistic reliability assessment of underground structures in combination with numerical analysis.

  • A stable walking pattern generation method for a biped robot is presented in this paper. In general, the ZMP (zero moment point) equations, which are expressed as differential equations, are solved to obtain a stable walking pattern. However, the number of differential equations is less than that of unknown coordinates in the ZMP equations. It is impossible to integrate the ZMP equations directly since one or more constraint equations are involved in the ZMP equations. To overcome this difficulty, DAE (differential and algebraic equation) solution method is employed. The proposed method has enough flexibility for various kinematic structures. Walking simulation for a virtual biped robot is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method. The method can be applied to the biped robot for stable walking pattern generation.

  • A new method has been developed in this paper for automatic quadrilateral mesh generation for a two-dimensional domain. The method is named 'centering method' because it centers a point at the domain and then divides it into sub-domains using cutting lines from the center point. Each of the cutting lines is selected based on the criterion using the angles between the boundary of the domain and the cutting line. The decomposition of the domain into sub-domains is repeated until every subdomain has four or six nodes. Pre-defined splitters are used to divide six-node domains into quadrilateral elements depending on their configuration and presence on the boundary of the initial domain. Arbitrary domains are meshed as examples to verify the robustness of the new method.

  • This paper is proposed a novel method to approximate the maximum power for a photovoltaic inverter system and tracking method. It is designed for power systems application and utilities. The proposed Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control has the advantage to provide a new simple way to approximate the optimal or rated voltage, the optimal or rated current and maximum power rating produced by a solar panel and the photovoltaic inverter. And this straightforward method will be named linear reoriented coordinates method (LRCM) with the advantage that Pmax and $V_{op}$ can be approximated using the same variable as the dynamic model without using complicate approximations or Taylor series. Furthermore tracking method is improved over 50% photovoltaic efficiency. This paper is proposed MPPT using LRMC and tracking method using weather condition of domestic moderate program technique. This paper is proposed the experimental results to verify the effectiveness of the new methods.

  • In this paper, we propose an improved surface reconstruction method from an oriented point cloud. Our method is a classical least-square scheme, but is based on the 7-direction box-spline and the BCC (Body-Centered Cubic) lattice, which results in surfaces with superior quality and lower computational overhead, compared to other methods based on the B-splines on the Cartesian lattice. Specifically, when compared with two of the most popular techniques our method results in better surfaces but only takes ${\approx}53%$ computation time.

  • In this study, the thermal properties of peeled chestnuts were measured, and the mathematical prediction model of freezing time was also developed for various interior positions from center to rind (surface). The measured thermal properties were showed that heat conductivity is $0.43W/m^{\circ}C$, specific heat is $2.7206J/m^3^{\circ}C$, latent heat is $216.9{\times}10^6J/m^3$ and freezing point is $-2.8^{\circ}C$. The entire process about reaching to the freezing time of peeled chestnuts was analyzed with its each regular depth position using the finite difference method (FDM) based on computer simulation. In case of regular freezing temperature, it was showed an that surface (rind) position is more rapidly reached into the freezing point rather than the center position, and also reaching time to the freezing point is more fast at the lower freezing temperature. Comparison results between simulation and experiments showed linear relationship. In regularly varying condition for freezing temperature, this method would give an information to predict a freezing time of the interior points for peeled chestnuts and more similar agricultural products.

  • This paper proposes a transformation method of the zero moment point (ZMP) and the center of mass (CoM) from one walking pattern to other patterns by considering the structure of a robot or walking situations in real time. In general, a humanoid robot has own structure characteristics like height and mass. The structure characteristics make the given CoM/ZMP walking pattern of one human or one humanoid robot to be difficult to apply to other robot directly. For this purpose, we analyze the characteristics of walking patterns according to the step length, duration of walking support phase and the CoM height by using the cart-table model as the simple humanoid robot model. A transformation equation is derived from the analyzation and it is verified with simulation.
