1,4-Dioxane was classified as a Group 2B carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. The compound was measured in surface water with a headspace gas chromatographic mass spectrometric detection. A 5 mL water sample was placed in a 10 mL headspace vial and saturated with NaCl, and the solution was spiked with 1,4-dioxane-d8 as an internal standard and sealed with a cap. Water samples were collected from twenty-two basins of Gum-River on June and September 2012, respectively. As a result, 1,4-dioxane was detected in the concentration range of $0.49-43.0{\mu}g/L$ (mean $2.0{\mu}g/L$) in the frequency of about 30% in surface water samples.

The study was carried out to develop and standardize the analytical method of 1,4-dioxane in water. The National Institute of Environmental Research in Korea has monitored for 1,4-dioxane in water since 1998 and it has been detected in environmental water occasionally. But the environmental pollution and analytical method in water is not well known over the world. The trace analytical method at low-${\mu}/L$ level is prerequisite in order to evaluate the residue of 1,4-dioxane in water. Evaluation of the method was demonstrated by comparing and analyzing with liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction and purge & trap technique. As a result of experiment by standard solutions and raw samples, the precision and accuracy for three methods were obtained within error rate of about 10%. Therefore, three methods were standardized as official monitoring method in Korea. Also, a convenient and simple liquid-liquid extraction method for the analysis of 1,4-dioxane in water was developed by combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and applied to the water samples in Korea
This paper reports a fabrication of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) scaffold membranes through phase separation process using pure and mixed solvents. Chloroform and 1,4-dioxane were used as pure solvents and mixed solvents were obtained by mixing the pure solvents together. Morphologies, mechanical properties and mass transfer characteristics of the scaffold membranes were investigated through SEM, stress-strain test and glucose diffusion test. Scaffold membranes from the solution with pure chloroform showed solid-wall pore structure. In contrast, nano-fibrous membranes were fabricated from the solution with pure 1,4-dioxane. In case of mixed solvents, the scaffold membranes showed various structures with changing composition of the solvents. When 1,4-dioxane content was lower than 20 wt% in the solvent, scaffold membrane showed solid-wall pore structure. When the content was 20 wt%, scaffold membranes with macropores with the maximum size of $100{\mu}m$ was obtained. In the concentration range of 1,4-dioxane over 25 wt%, the scaffold membranes showed nano-fibrous structures. In this range, the fibers showed different diameters with changing composition of the solvent. The minimum fiber diameter was about $15{\mu}m$, when 1,4-dioxane composition was 80 wt%. These results indicate that the composition of the solvent showed a significant effect on the structure of scaffold membrane.
International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified it as a possible carcinogen and World Health Organization (WHO) has suggested 50 ng/mL as a guideline value for 1,4-dioxane. Considering the toxicity of 1,4-dioxane and ingestion rate of drinking water, the monitoring of 1,4-dioxane in drinking water in Nakdong river is very important. We analyzed 1,4-dioxane four times per year for the 12 samples of treated water and 4 samples of raw water in Nakdong river in Korea from 2000 to 2007 and surveyed the trend of concentrations of 1,4-dioxane. As a results of analysis, 1,4-dioxane was detected from 0.24 to 240.2 ng/mL in treated water and from 0.39 to 81.9 ng/mL in raw water from 2000 to 2007. The average concentrations are 22.68 ng/mL and 19.15 ng/mL in treated water and raw water, respectively. The detected concentrations was decreased but frequency of detection was not changed since establishment of regulation in 2004. Results of comparison of 95 percentile excessive cancer risk of 1,4-dioxane in treated and raw water were each $6.63{\times}10^{-6}$, $3.17{\times}10^{-6}$ before 2004 and $2.10{\times}10^{-6}$, $1.22{\times}10^{-6}$ after 2004. Also, comparing the detected concentration and frequency for each season, these were more detected the concentration and frequency for 1,4-dioxane in treated and raw water from winter to spring.

The study presents the results of 1,4-dioxane degradation using zero valent (Fe$^0$) or Fe$^{2+}$ ions with and without UV. During the reaction, the change of [Fe$^{2+}$] and [Fe$^{2+}$]/[Fe(t)], the concentration ratio of ferrous ion to total iron ion in solution was measured. Less than 10% degradation of 1,4-dioxane was observed by UV-only, Fe$^0$-only, and Fe$^{2+}$-only conditions, and also the changes of [Fe$^{2+}$] and [Fe$^{2+}$]/[Fe(t)] were minimal in each reaction. However, the oxidation of Fe$^0$ was enhanced with the irradiation of UV by approximately 25% and the improvement of 1,4-dioxane degradation was observed. Fenton reaction ($Fe^{2+}+H_2O_2$) showed higher degradation efficiency of 1,4-dioxane until 90 min, which of the degradation was stopped after that time. In the reaction of Fe$^{2+}$ and UV, the ratio of [Fe$^{2+}$]/[Fe(t)] decreased then slowly increased after a certain time indicating the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe$^{2+}$. In case of Fe$^0$ in the presence of UV, the first-order rate constant was found to be 1.84$\times$10$^{-3}$ min$^{-1}$ until 90 min, and then changed to 9.33$\times$10$^{-3}$ min$^{-1}$ when the oxidation of Fe$^{2+}$ mainly occurred. In this case [Fe$^{2+}$]/[Fe(t)] kept decreasing for the reaction. However, the addition of perchlortae (ClO$_4^-$) in the reaction of Fe$^0$ and UV induced the continuous increase of [Fe$^{2+}$]/[Fe(t)] ratio. The results mean the primary degradation factor of 1,4-dioxane is the oxidation by the radicals generated from the redox reaction between Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$. Also, both UV and ClO$_4^-$ played the role inducing the reduction of Fe$^{3+}$, which is important to degrade 1,4-dioxane by enhancing the generation of radicals.

The excess molar enthalpies $H_m^E$ at T=298.15 K and p=101.3 kPa of ternary system {1,2-dichloropropane (1,2-DCP) + 1,3-dioxolane+ 1,4-dioxane} were predicted by using the binary contribution model of $Radojkovi{\check{c}}$ with correlated sub-binary Redlich-Kister parameters. Excess partial molar enthalpies ${\bar{H}}_i^E$ were also calculated for the binary systems {1,2-dichloropropane + 1,3-dioxolane}, {1,2-dichloropropane + 1,4-dioxane} and {1,3-dioxolane + 1,4-dioxane} using adjustable parameters of Redlich-Kister equation. By extrapolation of excess partial molar enthalpies to infinite dilution, limiting excess partial molar enthalpies ${\bar{H}}_i^{E,{\infty}}$ of each component were also obtained. The ternary excess molar enthalpies excess partial molar enthalpies of these sub-binary systems have been calculated by using our previously reported results.

Three different virgin activated carbons made of each coal(Calgon), coconut(Samchully) and wood(Picabiol) based activated carbon(AC) were tested for an adsorption performance of 1,4-dioxane in a continuous adsorption column. Breakthrough behavior was Investigated that the breakthrough points of coal, coconut and wood based AC were observed as 3600 bed volumn(BV), 1440 BV and 144 BV respectively. Adsorption capacity(X/M) of coal, coconut and wood based AC was observed. The reported results of adsorption capacity showed that coal based AC was highest(578.9 ${\mu}g/g$), coconut based AC was intermediate(142.3 ${\mu}g/g$) and wood based AC was lowest(7.4 ${\mu}g/g$) due to increasing specific surface area. Moreover, carbon usage rates(CURs) for coal, coconut and wood based AC had been shown as 0.48 g/day, 1.41 g/day and 6.9 g/day respectively. The constant characteristic of the system, k of coal based AC was found to be 91.5 and k of coconut based AC was found to be 17.9. Removal efficiencies of 1,4-dioxane with different ozonation dosages(2 and 5 mg/L) for 20 min ozonation had been shown 38% and 87% respectively. There was no observation for biological removal of 1.4-dioxane by attached micro-organisms when used(3.1 years and over 5 years) biological activated carbon(BAC) without pretreatment of oxidation were employed. When a combination of ozonation(2 mg/L and 5 mg/L) and BAC process for $10{\sim}30$ min was applied, removal efficiency for 1,4-dioxine increased only $2{\sim}6%$ compared to only applying ozonation. Therefore removal efficiency of BAC process prior to using oxidation was proven to negligible. Consequently, the results presented in this paper provide a better insight into the adsorption performance of 1,4-dioxane. This observation suggests that using virgin activated carbon made of coal is the best selection for removal of 1,4-dioxane in the water treatment for an advanced treatment. It is clear from this research that longer EBCT for ozonation or higher ozone concentration are more effective operation methods for removal of 1,4-dioxane than longer EBCT in the BAC process.
Treatment efficiency research was performed using Fenton process and the electrochemical process in the presence of ferrous ion and hydrogen peroxide for the industrial wastewater including 1,4-Dioxane produced during polymerization of polyester. The Fenton process and the electrochemical Iron Redox Reaction (IRR) process were applied for this research to use hydroxyl radical as the powerful oxidant which is continuously produced during the redox reaction with iron ion and hydrogen peroxide. The results of $COD_{Cr}$ and the concentration of 1,4-Dioxane were compared with time interval during the both processes. The rapid removal efficiency was obtained for Fenton process whereas the slow removal efficiency was occurred for the electrochemical IRR process. The removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ for 310 minutes was 84% in the electrochemical IRR process with 1,000 mg/L of iron ion concentration, whereas it was 91% with 2,000 mg/L of iron ion concentration. The lap time to remove all of 1,4-Dioxane, 330 mg/L in the wastewater took 150 minutes with 1,000 mg/L of iron ion concentration, however it took 120 minutes with 2,000 mg/L of iron ion concentration in the electrochemical IRR process.
1,4-Dioxane-degrading bacterial consortia were enriched from forest soil (FS) and activated sludge (AS) using a defined medium containing 1,4-dioxane as the sole carbon source. These two enrichments cultures appeared to have inducible tetrahydrofuran/dioxane and propane degradation enzymes. According to qPCR results on the 16S rRNA and soluble di-iron monooxygenase genes, the relative abundances of 1,4-dioxane-degrading bacteria to total bacteria in FS and AS were 29.4% and 57.8%, respectively. For FS, the cell growth yields (Y), maximum specific degradation rate ($V_{max}$), and half-saturation concentration ($K_m$) were 0.58 mg-protein/mg-dioxane, $0.037mg-dioxane/mg-protein{\cdot}h$, and 93.9 mg/l, respectively. For AS, Y, $V_{max}$, and $K_m$ were 0.34 mg-protein/mg-dioxane, $0.078mg-dioxane/mg-protein{\cdot}h$, and 181.3 mg/l, respectively. These kinetics data of FS and AS were similar to previously reported values. Based on bacterial community analysis on 16S rRNA gene sequences of the two enrichment cultures, the FS consortium was identified to contain 38.3% of Mycobacterium and 10.6% of Afipia, similar to previously reported literature. Meanwhile, 49.5% of the AS consortium belonged to the candidate division TM7, which has never been reported to be involved in 1,4-dioxane biodegradation. However, recent studies suggested that TM7 bacteria were associated with degradation of non-biodegradable and hazardous materials. Therefore, our results showed that previously unknown 1,4-dioxane-degrading bacteria might play an important role in enriched AS. Although the metabolic capability and ecophysiological significance of the predominant TM7 bacteria in AS enrichment culture remain unclear, our data reveal hidden characteristics of the TM7 phylum and provide a perspective for studying this previously uncultured phylotype.
Electrospray ionization (ESI) and ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (IMS-MS) were employed to investigate the solvated structures of ionic species in the lithium iodide electrolyte solution in the gas phase. The Li+I-Li+ triple ion and single standalone Li+ ions solvated by 1,4-dioxane were successfully generated and observed by ESI-MS under the influence of dioxane vapor at the inlet region. Under the present experimental condition, (1,4-dioxane)m·Li+ complex ions (m = 1, 2, and 3) and a (1,4-dioxane)·Li+I-Li+ complex ion were observed, which were further examined by IMS to investigate their structures. The presence of multiple structural isomers was confirmed, which accounts for the endothermic conformational transition of 1,4-dioxane from a chair to a boat to achieve bidentate O-donor binding to Li+ and Li+I-Li+. Further structural details critical for the ion-solvent interactions were also examined and discussed with the help of density functional theory calculations.
