  • α,β-Unsaturated aldehydes and ketones are regioselectively reduced to the corresponding allylic alcohols with /Dowex1-x8 system in THF at room temperature. This system is also efficient for the conversion of α-diketones and acyloins to the vicinal diols in refluxing THF.

  • Irradiation of aromatic $\alpha$-diketones, such as benzil, 4,4'-dimethylbenzil, 4-chlorobenzil, 4,4'-diisopropylbenzil, 3,3,'-dimethylbenzil, in methanol gives rise to xanthone derivatives, in addition to $\alpha$-hydroxyketones. Irradiation of 4,4'-dibromobenzil, 2,2'-pyridil, 2,2'-naphthil and 9,9'-anthril yields only $\alpha$-hydroxyketones, whereas 4,4'-dimethoxybenzil yields methyl 4-methoxybenzoate.

  • The synthesis of biologically active 1H-1,4-diazepines 4a-d and 3H-1,5-benzodiazepines 5a-d in good yields, from the heterocyclization reaction of 2-(4-methylthio benzenesulfonyl)-1,3-dimethyl/1-methyl-3-phenyl/1,3-diphenyl/1-methyl-3-ethoxy propane-1,3-dione 3a-d with ethylenediamine (EDA) and o-phenylenediamine (o-PDA), respectively, in the presence of silica sulfuric acid (SSA) is described. The novel ${\beta}$-diketones/${\beta}$-ketoesters 3a-d were synthesized by the condensation reaction of 4-methylthiobenzenesulfonyl chloride 1 with various ${\beta}$-diketones/${\beta}$-ketoesters 2a-d. All structures of the newly synthesized compounds were elucidated by elemental analysis and spectral studies. The compounds 4a-d and 5a-d have been screened for antimicrobial, antifungal and anthelmintic activity.

  • Template condensation of ${\alpha}$-diketones such as 2,3-butanedione or benzil with diaminoalkanes such as 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,3-diaminopropane, 1,4-diaminobutane, 1,6-diaminohexane, 1,8-diaminooctane or 1,12-diaminododecane in the presence of Cr(III) results in the formation of complexes of the type $[CrI,X_2]X$ (where L = tetraazamacrocycle having 12 to 32-membered ring and $X={NO_3}^- or Cl^-).$ The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic measurements and IR and diffuse reflectance spectra.

  • A systematic study of Knoevenagel reaction and Nazarov cyclization was made on variety of less reactive carbonyl compounds such as ${\beta}$-ketoesters, 1,3-diketones and cyclic active methylene compounds using $Yb(OTf)_3$ as the catalyst. Recycling study confirms reusability of the catalyst without much loss of activity.

  • Symmetrical diaryl ${\alpha}-diketones$ were synthesized in moderately good yields through the palladium catalyzed reaction of aryl iodides with carbon monoxide. The reaction was tolerant of a wide variety of fuctionalities($OCH_3,\;CH_3,\;NO_2,\;OH,\;COOH$) on the aryl iodide. On the other hand, the similar reaction of aryl bromides or chlorides with carbon monoxide did not proceed.

  • Heteroleptic complexes of zirconium (IV) derived from bulky Schiff base ligands containing a sulphur atom and oximes of heterocyclic ${\beta}$-diketones of the general formula ZrLL' (where $LH_2=RCNH(C_6H_4)SC:C(OH)N(C_6H_5)N:CCH_3$, $R=-C_6H_5$, $-C_6H_4Cl(p)$ and $L^{\prime}H_2=R^{\prime}C:(NOH)C:C(OH)N(C_6H_5)N:CCH_3$, $R^{\prime}=-CH_2CH_3$, $-C_6H_5$, $-C_6H_4Cl(p)$ were prepared by the reactions of zirconium tetrachloride with disodium salts of Schiff bases ($L\;Na_2$) and oximes of heterocyclic ${\beta}$-diketones ($L^{\prime}\;Na_2$) in 1:1:1 molar ratio in dry refluxing THF. The structures of these monomeric zirconium (IV) complexes were elucidated with the help of elemental analysis, molecular weight measurements, spectroscopic (IR, NMR and mass) studies. A distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry may be suggested for these heteroleptic zirconium (IV) complexes. The ligands (bulky Schiff base ligands containing a sulphur atom and oximes of heterocyclic ${\beta}$-diketones) and their heteroleptic complexes of zirconium (IV) were screened against A. flavus, P. aeruginesa and E. coli.
