Polymer electrolyte membranes containing polysilsesquioxane (PSQ) spheres were prepared with the blend of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) (60%) and poly(ether sulfone) (PES) (40%). The amount of PSQ spheres was fixed at 10 wt%. The prepared polymer electrolyte membranes were characterized in terms of methanol permeability, proton conductivity, and ion exchange capacity. In all cases, both methanol permeability and proton conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membranes containing PSQ spheres were lower than the values of Nafion 117 and higher than those of SPEEK/PES (6:4) blend without PSQ spheres. The experimental results indicated that the polymer electrolyte membranes containing MS64 and VTMOS spheres were the best choice in terms of the ratio of proton conductivity to methanol permeability.

This study evaluated the anti-inflammatory potential of a grasshopper ketone (GK) isolated from the brown alga Sargassum fulvellum on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cell line. GK was isolated and purified from the n-hexane fraction and its structure was verified on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data. GK up to $100{\mu}g/ml$ is not cytotoxic to RAW 264.7, and is an effective inhibitor of LPS-induced NO production in RAW 264.7 cells. The production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, $IL-1{\beta}$, and $TNF-{\alpha}$ was found significantly reduced in $0.1-100{\mu}g/ml$ dose ranges of GK treatment (p < 0.05). We confirmed the dose-dependent and significant inhibition of iNOS and COX-2 proteins expression. In addition, it has been shown that GK induces anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting MAPKs (ERK, JNK, and p38) and $NF-{\kappa}B$ p65 phosphorylation. Our results show that the anti-inflammatory properties of GK may be due to the inhibition of the $NF-{\kappa}B$ and MAPKs pathways, which are associated with the attenuation of cytokine secretion.

Separation of ethylene from ethane and propylene from propane have been conducted using facilitated olefin transport membrane with SPEEK-Ag (Ag substituted sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)). SPEEK was prepared by the sulfonation of PEEK using cone. $H_2SO_4$ and the reaction time affected the degree of sulfonation (DS) of the resulting SPEEK. SPEEK-Ag composite membrane was formed by soaking SPEEK in the polyester support into the Ag salt solution. With increasing the concentration of SPEEK in MeOH, the thickness of SPEEK on the polyester increased. The selectivity and the flux of SPEEK-Ag membrane for the separation of ethylene/ethane and propylene/propane were changed by the thickness of SPEEK layer on the top of polyester support. The anion of silver salt also affects the membrane performance.
In this study, a number of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) including benzene, toluene, p-xylene, styrene, and methyl ethyl ketone were analyzed from samples collected in ambient air and under the field conditions. These samples were analyzed independently by two different set-ups for VOC analyses, i.e., between [1] gas chromatography/flame ionization detector with tube sampling - (F-T system) and [2] gas chromatography/mass spectrometer with bag sampling (M-B system). The analytical results derived by both systems showed fairly similar patterns in relative sense but with moderately large differences in absolute sense. The results of M-B system were high relative to F-T system with the F-T/M-B ratio below 1. If the relative biases of the two measurement techniques are derived in terms of percent difference (PD) in concentration values, the results were generally above 35% on average. A student t-test was applied to investigate the statistical significance of those differences between the systems. The results of both analytical systems were different at 95% confidence level for toluene, p-xylene, styrene, and methyl ethyl ketone (P < 0.043). However, F-T and M-B systems showed strong correlations for toluene and p-xylene. The observed bias is explained in large part by such factors as the differences in standard phases used for each system and the chemical loss inside the bag sampler.

Among the gelatin hardness for photographic emulaion, the formaldehyde, dialdehydes, n-Methylol compounds, ketones, carbonylic acid and carbamic acid derivatives, and s-Triazine derivatives were studied The greater purts of hardeners formed cross-link by the reaction with E-Amino group in the lysine and OH group in the hydroxylysine. Glutaraldehyde produced most stable cross-link due to the formation of pyridinum ion. 2.5- hexanedione and 3-hexene-2,5-dione possible to use as the ketone hardner. The sodium salt of 2.4-dichloro-6-hydroxy-S-Triazine was newly developed as the olefinic hardners for emulsion.

A study was carried out to determine the effect of a very low-carbohydrate diet on weight gain, body composition, and serum levels of cholesterol, triacylglycerol, glucose, ketone bodies and insulin. Twenty rats (mean initial weight, 212 g) were divided into two groups and each group was assigned a conventional high-carbohydrate diet (control) or a very low-carbohydrate diet containing 59.8% ground pork rind snack and fed the diet for four weeks. Average daily body weight gain was not different between the two groups during the first two weeks, but was significantly lower in rats fed the very low-carbohydrate diet than in those in the control group during third (p<0.05) and fourth weeks (p<0.01). Feedintake as well as energy intake was lower in rats fed the very low-carbohydrate diet than in those in the control group. The very low-carbohydrate diet reduced (p<0.01) serum triacylglycerol (34$\pm$83 vs 82$\pm$8 mg/l00 mL) and insulin (3.90$\pm$0.53 vs 7.60$\pm$0.61 $\mu$IU/mL) levels, while increasing (p<0.01) ketone body level (368$\pm$25 vs 236$\pm$24 $\mu$mol/L), compared with the control. Serum glucose and total cholesterol levels were not different (p>0.05) between the two dietary treatments. Proximate analysis of carcasses showed that the very low-carbohydrate diet decreased (p<0.01) body fat (26.1$\pm$1.04 vs 30.5$\pm$0.86%), while increasing (p<0.01) body protein (63.1$\pm$0.94 vs 59.4$\pm$0.70%) contents. Results indicate that short-term feeding of a very low-carbohydrate diet is beneficial for alleviating risk factors known to involve cardiovascular diseases or artherosclerosis. However, more studies with model animals as well as humans are recommended to examine the long-term health benefits of low-carbohydrate diets.
Traditional static headspace and headspace solid-phase microextraction(SPME) techniques were compared for their effectiveness in the extraction of volatile flavor compounds from the headspace of persimmon vinegar. The adsorption condition of SPME fiber for equilibrated headspace vapor was selected as $80^{\circ}C$ and 20 min. Total FID response for volatiles of persimmon vinegar was exactly higher such as total peak area $18.18{\times}10^6$ in SPMEGC technique than total peak area $1.35{\times}10^6$ in static headspace-GC. The major volatiles in persimmon vinegar were acetic acid, ethyl acetate, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, ethanol, phenethyl alcohol. From static headspace-GC technique, 3 acids, 3 aldehydes, 5 alcohols, 9 esters and 1 ketone were identified. From SPME-GC technique, total 34 compounds including 6 acids, 7 aldehydes, 6 alcohols, 9 esters, 2 hydrocarbones, 1 ketone, 3 others were detected. Also the ratio for benzaldehyde, phenethylacetate and phenethylalcohol were higher in SPME-GC.
We classified the previously reported antagonistic strains of Sorangium cellulosum into 5 subspecies (A-E). Four strains were antagonistic to Botrytis cinerea (AB group) and two strains were antagonistic to Colletotrichum acutatum (AC group). According to the genetic and sequential analyses with standard genes, xynB1, bglA2, groEL1 for grouping, all strains of AB group were belonged to subspecies C and all strains of AC group were belonged to subspecies D. In addition, high pressure liquid chromatography with the culture filtrates confirmed the genetic results, because AB group had peaks with retention time at 20-22.5 minutes, whereas AC group had no peak. There was positive relationship ($R^2=0.9652$) between the control values of infecting B. cinerea on cherry tomatoes and the main peak areas of chromatograms among the four isolates of AB group. From the subspecies results of AB group, the main peak of KYC 3270 was expected to be epothilone D. However the retention times of the standard of commercial epothilone D and the main peak of KYC 3270 culture filtrate were different as 9.9 and 11.581 min., respectively. Finally, the antagonistic metabolite of AB group was inferred as 7-ketone epothilone D.

The reactions of semicarbazide hydrochloride with aliphatic and alicyclic ketones were studied kinetically at 15, 25, 35 and 45$^{\circ}C$ in 20% ethanol solution buffered at pH 2.9. The rate of cyclohexanone semicarbazone formation is 5.5 times as fast as that of cyclopentanone semicarbazone, while 3-pentanone semicarbazone is 4.7 times as slow as that of 2-pentanone, The activation energy of cyclohexanone, 2-pentanone, 2 hexanone, cyclopentanone, 4-methyl-2-pentanone and 3-pentanone semicarbazone formation are calculated 5.08, 7.52, 8.79, 9.59, 9.49, 11.59, respectively. It is concluded from the effect of ionic strength that the reaction is affected by not ion but neutral molecules being progressed hydrogen bond between oxygen atom of carbonyl group and hydrogen atom of acid-catalyst and concerted nucleophilic attack of free base on the carbonly compound. Dependence on pH of the rate of 2-pentanone semicarbozone formation is linear relationship below pH 4.60 and above pH 5.60. As a result of studing citric acid catalysis, second order constants increase linearly with citric acid concentration. As the catalyst concentration is varied from 0.025 to 0.10 mol/1 at pH 2.90, the rate constants increase 1.4 times, but slight increase is observed at pH 5.60. Conclusively, the rate-determining step is formation of tetrahedral interemediate below pH 4.65 and dehydration between pH 5.60 and pH 7.11. It is concluded that the formation reaction of cyclohexanone semicarbazone is faster than cyclopentanone semicarbazone due to the steric strain in the process of forming tetrahedral intermediate.
The odor substances generated in a feed manufactory operating for the commercialization of animal-vegetable materials were analyzed and the odor reduction efficiency by a chemical scrubber was evaluated. The major causative substances in the feed manufactory comprised about 45.4% of ketone compounds and about 13.3% of aldehyde compounds. On the other hand, the removal efficiencies of diacetyl and acetoin as ketone compounds were 77.3% and 78.1%, respectively, by a chemical scrubber. Additionally, the removal efficiencies of acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, valeraldehyde, 2-furancarboxaldehyde, and nonanal were 86.0%, 78.9%, 67.4%, 52.8%, and 71.9%, respectively. These rates were higher than the odor generation substance contribution rate as a result of treating the exhaust gas generated from the feed manufactory by the chemical scrubber using 5% of C3. It was also found that xylene, methylcyclopentane, benzene, ethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, and decane were almost not removed.
