Development of Vortex Scrubber Using Electrolyzed Water for the Removal Efficiency Improvement of Minute Particles and Odor (미세분진 및 냄새제거 효율향상을 위한 선회류식 세정전해 기술개발)

  • According to Indoor Air Quality(IAQ) management law for multi-use buildings, SEEONE CO., Ltd. made pilot and tested it to remove minute particle, odor, VOCs, etc. within the standards of IAQ. This pilot made by SEEONE CO., Ltd. is vortex scrubber washing electrolyzed water. As 30 minutes test result in multi-use building indoor place, minute particle(the smoke of a cigarette) was reduced $920{\mu}g/m^3{\rightarrow}112{\mu}g/m^3$, gaseous contaminants was reduced Formaldehyde (HCHO) 20ppm$\rightarrow$4ppm, Ammonia($NH_3$) 50ppm$\rightarrow$1ppm, Trimethylamine ($(CH_3CH_2)_3N$) 15ppm$\rightarrow$trace, Methylethylketone($CH_3COC_2H_5$) 25ppm$\rightarrow$trace, Acetic acid ($CH_3COOH$) 20ppm$\rightarrow$trace, Acetaldehyde($CH_3CHO$) 15ppm$\rightarrow$2ppm and Acetone($CH_3COCH_3$) 50ppm$\rightarrow$N.D. The pilot test result of the air filter using electroyzed water in vortex scrubber showed high removal efficiency. Because purified air maintain indoor humidity of approximately 40~60%, so users can feel pleasant. In E.coli, S.aureus sterilization test and CODcr, turbidity treatment test by electrolysis, germs was sterilized over 99.99% and CODcr and turbidity was decreased gradually. So water used for washing can be reused by electrolysis.

Identification of Irradiation-induced Volatile Flavor Compounds in Beef (방사선 조사 쇠고기에서의 휘발성 조사물질의 구명)

  • Irradiation-induced volatile flavor compounds in irradiated (1, 3, 5, 10 kGy) beef were analyzed by liquid liquid continuous extraction (LLCE) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) methods. One hundred fifty volatile compounds were detected in irradiated beef. These compounds were composed mainly of 71 hydrocarbons, 35 aromatic compounds, 15 aldehydes, 7 ketones, 4 acids, 6 esters and 12 miscellaneous compounds. Among these, only 6 volatile compounds including (E) -2-hexenal, nonene, 2-nonenal, cyclodecene, dodecene and cyclododecene were detected as irradiation-induced volatile flavor compounds, comparing with unirradiated beef meat. However, 4 volatile compounds, such as cyclodecene (r=0.88), (E)-2-hexenal (r=0.85), nonene (r=0.74) and 2-nonenal (r=0.70), having a positive correlation coefficient with the increment of irradiation dose, were considered as marker compounds for detecting irradiation dosages in irradiated beef.

  • The condensation reaction of (benzylene)triphenylphosphoranes with carbonyl compounds in supercritical carbon dioxide was examined. Reactions of (benzylene)phosphoranes (ca. 1 mmol) with several benzaldehydes in a supercritical carbon dioxide (80 $^{\circ}C$, 2,000 psi) containing THF entrainer (5%) in a 24 mL reactor proceed smoothly to yield olefination products in fairly good to excellant yields but slower, compared to reactions in a conventional THF solvent. Generally, phosphoranes that are not substituted with a nitro group show more (Z)-selective reactions with aromatic aldehydes under $scCO_2$ condition than in THF. The reaction of (benzylene)triphenylphosphoranes with 4-t-butylcyclohexanone gave the corresponding olefin compounds with a low conversion under both the supercritical carbon dioxide and the organic THF solvent. Our preliminary study showed the Wittig reaction carries out smoothly in supercritical carbon dioxide medium and also a possibile tunability of this reaction pathway by adding a entrainer. The results would be useful for devising a novel process for the environmentally friendly Wittig reaction.

Removal of Dissolved Humic Acid with Physicochemical Treatment Process (물리화학적 공정에 의한 용존성 Humic Acid의 제거)

  • This study was conducted for the two purposes; one was removal of dissolved humic acid, the well-known precursor of trihalomethanes (THMs), by physicochemical treatment processes such as ozone oxidation, coagulation and activated carbon adsorption. The other was qualitative identification of by-products in chlorination of the dissolved humic acid. When ozone oxidation was applied to remove the dissolved humic acid, pH was abruptly decreased. It was indicated that humic acid was not perfectly converted to $CO_2$ and $H_2O$, but to low fatty acid. In coagulation process, the coagulant was polyaluminumchloride which was widely used for drinking water treatment in recent years. With the dosage of 160 mg/L, total organic carbon(TOC), $COD_{Cr}$ and color were removed with 23%, 24% and 5% respectively. Color was effectively removed by ozone oxidation process, which was the first order reaction, with the reaction rate constant of $0.067min^{-1}$. In activated carbon adsorption process, preozonation process could remove more effectively the dissolved humic acid than that without preozonation. When the dissolved humic acid and sodium hydrochloride were reacted with 1 mg-NaOCl/mg-TOC, only trihalomethanes were detected.

Analyses of Essential Oil and Headspace Compositions of Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus by SDE and SPME Methods (SDE 및 SPME에 의한 냉이(Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus)정유 및 Headspace 성분 분석)

  • This study was conducted to determine the volatile flavor compositions of the essential oil and the headspace of Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus. Essential oil and headspace from the plant were extracted by simultaneous steam distillation extraction (SDE), and solid-phase microextraction(SPME) methods, respectively. Seventy-two compounds including 28 hydrocarbons, 4 aldehydes, 6 ketones, 16 alcohols, 4 esters, 8 acids, and 6 miscellaneous ones were identified in the leaf essential oil extracted by SDE method Sixty-eight compounds including 26 hydrocarbons, 2 aldehydes, 6 ketones, 17 alcohols, 4 esters, 6 acids, and 7 miscellaneous ones were identified in the root essential oil. According to the instrumental analyses the essential oil, phytol ($21.12\%$ in leaves, $20.94\%$ in roots) was the most abundant compound Alcohols, esters, and acids were main groups of the essential oil. On the other hand, thirty-eight compounds including 18 hydrocarbons, 3 aldehydes, 3 ketones, 9 alcohols, 2 esters, 3 miscellaneous ones were identified in the leaf headspace by SPME. In root headspace, thirty-three compounds including 16 hydrocarbons, 2 aldehydes, 1 ketone, 9 alcohols, 3 esten;, and 2 miscellaneous ones were identified. Hydrocarbons($44.02\%$ in leaves, $56.98\%$ in roots) were the main components of the headspace of Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus.

Changes in volatile compounds in rice-based distilled soju aged in different types of containers (숙성기간과 저장용기를 달리한 쌀 증류식 소주의 휘발성 향기성분 변화)

  • In this study, volatile compounds in 13 aged and 3 commercial rice-distilled soju samples were isolated by headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 85 volatile components including 35 esters, 15 alcohols, 5 ketones, 3 aldehydes, 15 miscellaneous, and 14 unknowns were identified. Esters and alcohols were the largest groups among the quantified volatiles. Differences in volatile compounds among the distilled soju samples and possible sample groupings were examined by principal component analysis of the GC-MS datasets. The first and second principal components (PC1 and PC2, respectively) explained 51.94% of the total variation across the 16 samples. The samples aged in oak containers had higher concentrations of ketones, aldehydes, and miscellaneous compounds. In the positive direction of PC1, oak-aged samples were observed, while, pot-aged samples were observed on the far negative side. Furthermore, samples aged for longer periods, such as 18 months, were observed in the positive direction of PC2.

Volatile Components of Flower and Seed of Safflower (홍화꽃 및 홍화씨의 휘발성성분)

  • Volatile components in flower and seed of safflower were identified. Volatile flavor compounds of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) was extracted by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction method using Likens and Nickerson's extraction apparatus. Concentrated extract was analyzed and identified by gas chromatography and GC-mass spectrometry. Main volatile components in flower were terpene compounds, including p-cymene, limonene, ${\alpha}-phellandrene$, ${\gamma}-terpinene$, camphor, 4-terpineol, selinene, ${\beta}-caryophyllene$, torreyol, ${\beta}-eudesmol$, and 10 acids including 3-methylbutanoic acid, 2-methylbutanoic acid, and acids of $C_{2},\;C_{5}-C_{11}$. Main volatile components in seed and safflower were 20 aldehydes including hexanal (7.17%), (E)-2-heptenal (1.10%), (E,Z)-2,4-decadienal and (E,E)-2,4-decadienal.

Herbicidal Activities of Essential Oils from Pine, Nut Pine, Larch and Khingan Fir in Korea (국내산 소나무, 잣나무, 낙엽송, 분비나무 정유의 제초활성)

  • The objective of this research was to understand herbicidal activity of essential oils isolated from leaves of pine (Pinus densiflora), nut pine (Pinus koraiensis), larch (Larix kaempferi) and khingan fir (Abies nephrolepsis) in Korea. In a seed bioassay, essential oils of nut pine, larch and khingan fir inhibited the growth of rapeseed (Brassica napus) seedlings by 50% at 4,766, 1,865, $5,934{\mu}g\;ml^{-1}$, respectively, however, that of pine did not show any herbicidal effect. In a green house experiment, fall panicum, Southern crabgrass, sorghum, barnyardgrass, quackgrass, black nightshade, Indian jointvetch, velvet leaf, and Japanese morningglory were controlled in 24 hours by the foliar application of 10% essential oils from pine, nut pine, larch and khingan fir. The treated plant parts showed burndown effect, however, new shoots appeared 3 days after treatment. Results of GC-MS analysis showed that essential oils from pine, nut pine, larch and khingan fir contained 16, 25, 25, and 16 compounds, respectively, with hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, and esters. The major compounds of the essential oils were 3-carene, bornyl acetate, camphene, limonene, ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene and ${\beta}$-phellandrene.

A Close Examination of Unstability and a Quality Improvement using Anhydrous $Na_2CO_3$ in Waste Plastic's Thermal Pyrolysis Oil (폐플라스틱 열분해 재생유의 불안정한 요인 규명과 무수탄산나트륨으로 품질 향상)

  • Study on the instability of waste plastic's thermal pyrolysis oil was carried out for the purpose of improving its quality. The reaction of pyrolysis oil with ozone changed double bonds into aldehydes and ketone, estimated that HDPE pyrolysis oil contained $\sim45$ wt% 1-alkene type olefins, and PP pyrolysis oil did $\sim73$ wt% olefins, which consisted of $\sim47$ wt% secondary and $\sim20$ wt% primary alkenes. The dark brown color and odor of pyrolysis oil were improved by eliminating double bonds, indicated that they were directly related to unsaturated hydrocarbons. Container test showed that metal can affected oil quality worse than the brown glass bottle. Antioxidant added into pyrolysis oil was consumed up to 90% within $2\sim3$ days and the wt. composition of unsaturated hydrocarbons in pyrolysis oil was not changed within 50 days, inferring that instability of pyrolysis oil due to unsaturated bonds can be stabilized by antioxidants. Adsorption test on silica gel, activated carbon and alumina to remove precipitates in oil produced a good result, but not enough to remove moisture. However, cheap anhydrous sodium carbonate showed the best removal efficiency of moisture as well as precipitates in oil. Therefore the pyrolysis oil quality improvement was accomplished by applying anhydrous $Na_2CO_3$ into the production plant.

Hepatic glycogenosis in a patient with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes mellitus (혈당 조절이 불량한 제1형 당뇨병 환자에서 발생한 간의 당원축적증)

  • Hepatomegaly and liver dysfunction might develop in patients with diabetes mellitus due to glycogen deposition or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. We experienced a case of hepatic glycogenosis in a patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus who presented with recurrent hypoglycemia, suggesting impairment of glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis. A 10-year-old girl with a 4-year history of type 1 diabetes mellitus was admitted because of recurrent hypoglycemia and abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant. She had Cushingoid features and hepatomegaly that extended 6 cm below the right costal margin. Laboratory data and radiologic examination revealed elevated liver enzyme levels due to fatty liver. Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining revealed intense glycogen deposition in the cytoplasm of the hepatocytes and PAS reactivity was lost with diastase treatment. At 2 months after administration of glucagon injection and uncooked cornstarch between meals and at bedtime, the hypoglycemic episodes and liver dysfunction improved. It is important to distinguish hepatic glycogenosis from steatohepatitis, because it is possible to prevent excessive hepatic glycogen storage in hepatic glycogenosis cases by strictly controlling blood glucose level and by glucagon administration. To prevent severe hypoglycemic symptoms accompanied by hepatic glycogenosis, we suggest that uncooked cornstarch, which is effective in maintaining blood glucose level, can also be administered.
