MMP1 rs1799750 Single Nucleotide Polymorphism and Lung Cancer Risk: A Meta-analysis

  • Background: Numerous studies have investigated the association of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP1) rs1799750 single nucleotide polymorphism with lung cancer susceptibility, but the findings are inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to comprehensively evaluate any possible association. Methods: We searched publications from MEDLINE, EMBASE and CNKI databases which assessed links between the MMP1 rs1799750 polymorphism and lung cancer risk. We calculated the pooled odds ratio (OR) and its 95% confidence interval (95%CI) using either fixed-effects or random-effects models. Results: The meta-analysis was based on 9 publications encompassing 4,823 cases and 4,298 controls. The overall results suggested there was a significant association between the MMP1 rs1799750 polymorphism and lung cancer risk (1G vs. 2G: OR = 0.83, 95%CI = 0.73-0.94; 1G1G vs. 2G2G: OR = 0.73, 95%CI = 0.59-0.92; 1G1G vs. 1G2G/2G2G: OR = 0.87, 95%CI = 0.79-0.97; 1G1G/1G2G vs. 2G2G: OR = 0.78, 95%CI = 0.64-0.95). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, the association was still obvious in Asians (all P values < 0.05), but there was no association in Caucasians (all P values > 0.05). Conclusions: The MMP1 rs1799750 polymorphism is associated with decreased lung cancer risk, and a race-specific effect may exist in this association.

키토산을 이용한 김치의 숙성 지연과 보존기간 연장에 관한 연구

  • 고분자 키토산(분자량 약 800,000)을 농도별(0%, 0.1%, 0.2%, 0.3%)로 김치를 제조하여, pH, 적정산도, 총균수, 젖산균 수, 대장균군 수 및 관능검사를 조사한 결과는 다음과 같이 나타났다. 1. 키토산 무첨가 김치는 발효 후 6일경에 pH가 초기 5.4에서 4.1로 급격히 떨어졌으며 그 후부터는 천천히 떨어져 발효 후 약 15일 경과 후에는 3.9로 나타났다. 그러나 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산을 첨가한 김치에서는 초기 pH 5.38, 5.30 및 5.28에서 6일경에는 pH가 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산에서 4.23, 4.34 및 4.47로 각각 나타났다. 15일 경과 후에는 0.1% 고분자 키토산 김치는 키토산 무첨가 김치와 거의 같은 pH인 3.9로 나타났으나 0.2%와 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 pH는 3.90보다 높은 4.10, 4.10으로 각각 나타났다. 2. 각 김치 종류별 적정산도를 측정한 결과는 발효초기에 모든 구가 0.72%로 나타났으며, 발효 후 6일 경에서는 키토산 무첨가, 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 적정산도는 각각 2.16%, 2.00%, 1.70% 및 1.30%로 나타났다. 그리고 15일 경과 후에는 키토산 무첨가 김치의 적정산도가 2.25%이였으나 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치는 각각 2.26%, 2.24 및 2.22%로 나타났다. 3. 발효가 진행 중에 총균수를 측정한 결과 시간과 더불어 총균수가 모든 구에 있어서 서서히 증가하였고 발효초기의 모든 김치구의 총균수는 2.5X105∼5.4X106 cfu/g 범위였으며, 김치 맛이 들기 시작한 6일경에서의 각 구별 총균수는 키토산 무첨가 김치가 2.4X109 cfu/g이였구 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 총균수는 각각 1.2X109 cfu/g, 4.0X108 cfu/g 및 1.1X107 cfu/g으로 나타났다. 그리고 김치가 완전히 익은 15일 후에는 무첨가 김치, 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 총균수는 5.4X107 cfu/g, 3.3X107 cfu/g, 1.8X108cfu/g 및 4.2X108 cfu/g로 나타났다. 4. 발효가 진행 중에 젖산균 수를 측정한 결과 시간과 더불어 젖산균 수가 모든 구에 있어서 서서히 증가하였으며, 발효초기의 모든 김치구의 젖산균 수는 2.0X104∼2.7X106 cfu/g 범위였으며 김치 맛이 들기 시작한 6일경에서의 각 구별 젖산균 수는 키토산 무첨가 김치가 3.2X108 cfu/g이었고, 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 젖산균 수는 각각 1.6X108 cfu/g, 13X108 cfu/g 및 9.6X107 cfu/g으로 나타났다. 그리고 김치가 완전히 익은 15일 후에는 무첨가 김치, 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 젖산균 수는 5.4X107 cfu/g, 3.3X107 cfu/g, 8.6X106 cfu/g 및 2.6X106 cfu/g로 나타났다. 5. 발효가 진행 중에 대장균 군 수가 시간과 더불어 대장균군 수가 모든 구에 있어서 6일까지는 서서히 증가하다가 그 후부터는 대장균 군 수가 감소하였다. 즉, 발효초기에는 모든 구가 2.0X104∼4.0X105 cfu/g이었고, 6일 경에는 8.9X104∼4.5X105 cfu/g로 약간 증가하였으며 15일후에는 키토산 무첨가 김치가 2.0X102 cfu/g이었으며, 0.1%, 0.2% 및 0.3% 고분자 키토산 김치의 대장균군 수는 각각 2.0X102 cfu/g, 1.1X102 cfu/g 및 4.0X101 cfu/g로 점점 감소하였다. 6. 관능검사 결과는 키토산 무첨가 김치와 0.1% 첨가 김치는 유사한 선호도를 나타내어 0.1% 첨가 김치가 기능성과 보존성을 높여줄 뿐만 아니라 선호도도 높은 것으로 나타났다.

Characteristics of Salt Adsorption by Calcium Alginate Beads (칼슘알긴산비드에 의한 염분의 흡착특성)

  • The adsorption characteristics of sodium chloride into Ca-alginate beads have been investigated and the result were as follows: Sodium chloride uptake by Ca-alginate beads increased with time. The highest uptake volume of sodium chloride was 4.2g after 10 minutes. The uptake volume by Fe, Ca, Ba, and Sr-alginate beads was 5.6g, 4.2g, 4.2g and 4.0g, respectively but in case of Fe-alginate beads, the induced hydrogel beads were very fragile and the strength of Fe-alginate beads were weaker than Ca- and Ba-alginate beads. Mg-alginate bead was not formed and Ca-, Ba- and Sr-alginate beads had a similar uptake volume about 4.2g, respectively. The uptake volume of sodium chloride by CaCl$_2$concentration(0.1M. 0.2M and 1M), curing solution, was 4.8, 4.2g and 4.1g, respectively. The uptake volume by sodium alginate concentration(0.6%, 1% and 2%) was 2.8g, 4.0g, and 4.4g, respectively and Ca-alginate bead size was not effected in uptake sodium chloride. The uptake rate on initial sodium chloride concentration(4%, 8%, 12% and 16%) was 30%, 28%, 27% and 25%, respectively. The uptake rate on basic pH(10.0) was higher than when compared to other neutral pH(6.8) and acidic pH(4.0). The initial uptake velocity of sodium chloride from immobilization beads with salt resistant bacteria was lower than that of non-immobilization beads. The uptake rate of sodium chloride was decreased according to elongation of curing time. Reusability of Ca-alginate beads was possible but according to reutilization, the salt uptake volume of beads was also decreased. The uptake volume of sodium chloride from Doengjang by Ca-alginate beads on time course(3, 6, 12, and 24 hour) was revealed 5g, 6g, 7g and 7g, respectively.

  • The mutant with high productivity, X. malvacearum SNUF 560-6, was acquired from the X. malvacearum SNUF 560 with low productivity by UV-light irradiation. It was preserved is lyophilized stock culture and it was transferred to PDA slant to maintain viability fortnightly. Fermentations were started by retransfering to MY agar slant from PDA stok culture. The experiments for optimal xanthan gum production were studied in a chemically defined medium. Of the carbon and nitrogen sources tested, 0.4% sucrose medium and 10mM glutamic acid medium yielded the highest xanthan gun production respectively. The addition of 10g/l succinic acid stimulated xanthan gum production. Also 65mM $PO_4\;^{-3}\;(12.6g/l\;KH_2PO_4)$ was effective on xanthan gum production. Finally, medium 1 and medium 2 which have high xanthan gum production potencies were achieved in this stud. The components of medium 1 and medium 2 were as follows: Medium 1 : sucrose 40g/l glutamate 10mM $PO_4\;^{-3}\;54mM\;(KH_2PO_4\;12.65g/l)$ Citrate 2g/l $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;0.2g/l$ $H_3BO_3\;0.005/l$ ZnO 0.006/l $FeCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O\;0.0024g/l$ $CaCO_3\;0.02g/l$ Medium 2 : $Sucrose\;40g/l\;(NH_4)_2SO_4\;2g/l$ $PO_4\;^{-3}\;65mM\;(KH_2PO_4\;12.65g/l)$ Succinate 10g/l $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;0.02g/l$ $H_3BO_3\;0.06g/l$ ZnO 0.006g/l $FeCl_2{\cdot}6H_2O\;0.0024g/l$ $CaCO_3\;0.02g/l$.

Simultaneous Determinaton of Octylphenol, Nonylphenol, Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in Biological Samples (생체시료 중 Octylphenol, Nonylphenol, Bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate의 동시정량)

  • A comprehensive analytical method of endocrine disruptors[i.e., nonylphenol(NP), octylphenol(OP), bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(BEHP)] in meat or pork samples was developed. The method employed closed culture tube extraction with dichloromethane and solvent exchange to iso-hexane and SPE(2g) aminopropyl column, followed by determination on gas chromatography linked to mass spectrometry(GC/MS) operated in the single ion monitering(SIM) mode. For the multipoint recovery of nonylphenol, octylphenol and bis(2-ethlhexyl) phthalate OP, NP were showen good recoveries in $0.125-1.25{\mu}g/g$ range of concentration, and BEHP more good recoveries in $0.0125-12.5{\mu}g/g$ wide range of concentration. The present method was applied to beef or pork samples of mart and butcher in Cheonju city and near Cheonju. The range of concentrations was respectively, $0.06-0.24{\mu}g/g$ in nonylphenol(NP) and $0.36-2.35{\mu}g/g$ in bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate(BEHP), but octylphenol(OP) was not dected in any samples. This method provides a powerful analytical tool to investigate a wide range of endocrine disruptors in biological samples of limited quantity.

In vitro Antioxidant, Anti-allergic and Anti-inflammatory Effects of Ethanol Extracts from Korean Sweet Potato Leaves and Stalks (한국산 고구마잎과 고구마줄기 에탄올 추출물의 in vitro 항산화, 항알레르기 및 항염증효과)

  • In order to increase the utilization of sweet potato leaves and stalks as much as roots, it is necessary to study their beneficial potential. In this study, the antioxidant, antiallergic and anti-inflammatory effects of sweet potato leaves and stalks were evaluated by measuring total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, DPPH radical scavenging effects, the reducing power and inhibition effects on xanthine oxidase (XO), 5-lipoxygenase (LOX), and cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2 activities. Blanched sweet potato leaves (SL), raw whole purple stalks (ST) and peeled stalks (PST) were freeze-dried and extracted with 95% ethanol. Total polyphenol content was highest in SL (11.03 mg/g), followed by ST (0.87 mg/g), and PST (0.37 mg/g). Total flavonoid content was highest for SL (9.01 mg/g), followed by ST (0.50 mg/g) and PST (0.25 mg/g). The $IC_{50}$ for DPPH radical scavenging effects was highest for SL ($43.6{\mu}g/mL$), followed by ST ($308.4{\mu}g/mL$) and PST ($1,631.3{\mu}g/mL$). The reducing power was highest for SL ($59.72{\mu}g$ ascorbic acid eq./mL), followed by ST ($12.56{\mu}g$ ascorbic acid eq./mL) and PST ($2.18{\mu}g$ ascorbic acid eq./mL) with $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ of ethanol extract. The inhibition rate on XO activity was highest for SL (13.06%), followed by ST (5.05%) and PST (0.0%) at $250{\mu}g/mL$ extract treatment. The inhibition rate on COX-2 activity was highest for SL (55.34%), followed by ST (2.18%) and PST (0.0%) at $250{\mu}g/mL$ extract treatment. The inhibition rate on 5-LOX activity was highest for SL (91.16%), followed by ST (33.38%) and PST (14.93%) at $50{\mu}g/mL$ treatment. Taken together, sweet potato leaves showed high antioxidative, anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory activities, especially with very strong inhibition effects on 5-LOX activity. These beneficial effects of sweet potato leaves might be mainly caused by the high content of polyphenols and flavonoids.

Study on the Visceral Organs, Head and Body Weight in Day-Old Chicks of Quail and Silky Fowl (메추리와 오골계 초생추의 생체중과 두 및 장기중량에 관한 연구)

  • Fifty of one day-old chicks of silky fowl were hatched at Dept. of Animal Science, Gyeongsang National University and fifty of one day-old chicks of quails were hatched at Gim Hae, Gyung Nam. This experiment was investigated at 24 hours after incubation. Twee items investigated in this experiment were the live weights, the weights of head, eye-ball, brain, heart, liver, lung, kidney, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and yolk sac. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1, Average weights of body, head, eye-ball brain, heart, liver, lung, kidney, stomach, small intestine, large intesine and yolk sac of the quail chicks and standard errors were 6.54${\pm}$0.02g, 1.38${\pm}$0.l3g, 0.29${\pm}$0.004g, 0.24${\pm}$0.006g, 0.08${\pm}$0.002g, 0.21${\pm}$0.005g, 0.06${\pm}$0.002g, 0.05${\pm}$0. 002g, 0.46${\pm}$0.010g, 0.24${\pm}$0.008g, 0.10${\pm}$0.004g, and 0.28${\pm}$0.0l6g, respectively. 2. Average weights of body, head, eye-ball, brain, heart, liver, lung, kidney, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and yolk sac of the silky fowl chicks and standard errors were 26.60${\pm}$0.491g, 4.28${\pm}$0.071g, 0.64${\pm}$0.039g, 0.55${\pm}$0.025g, 0.21${\pm}$0.0l2g, 0.77${\pm}$0.030g, 0.13${\pm}$0.006g, 0.08${\pm}$0.006g, 1,53${\pm}$0.076g 0.73${\pm}$0.036g, 0.42${\pm}$0.031g, and 2.65${\pm}$0.297g, respectively. 3. The relative ratios of the organ weight versus body weight in guails were compared with those of the commercial chicks (Hibro, Hubbard, and Hisex) and silky fowls. It was noted that the relative weights of the brain and eye ball with respect to body weight were larger in case of quails (Table 3). The weights of heart, liver, lung, kidney, stomach and small intestine in silky fowl were smaller than those of commercial chicks and quail chicks. Other items were similar in weight to commercial chicks ana quail chicks.

Element Dispersion and Wallrock Alteration of TA26 Seamount, Tonga Arc (통가열도 TA26 해저산의 모암변질과 원소분산)

  • TA26 seamount, which is located at south part of Tonga arc, occurs widely hydrothermal plume and is area that sampled hostrock, hydrothermal ore and hydrothermal alteration rock for this study. Hostrocks are basalt and basaltic andesite. Altered rocks by hydrothermal solution consists of plagioclase, pyroxene, pyrite, ilmenite, amorphous silica, barite, smectite, iron sulfates, Fe-Si sulfates and Fe silicates. Gains and losses of major, trace and rare earth elements during wallrock alteration suggest that $K_2O$(+0.04~+0.45 g), $SiO_2$(-6.52~+10.56 g), $H_2O$(-0.03~+6.04 g), $SO_4$(-0.46~+17.54 g), S(-0.46~+13.45 g), total S(-0.51~+16.93 g), Ba(-7.60~+185078.62 g), Sr(-36.18~+3033.08 g), Ag(+54.83 g), Au(+1467.49 g), As(-5.80~+1030.80 g), Cd(+249.78 g), Cu(-100.57~+1357.85 g), Pb(+4.91~+532.65 g), Sb(-0.32~+66.59 g), V(-113.58~+102.94 g) and Zn(-49.56~+14989.92 g) elements are enriched from hydrothermal solution. Therefore, gained(enriched) elements(($K_2O$, $H_2O$, $SO_4$, S, total S, Ba, Sr, Ag, Au, As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, V, Zn) represent a potentially tools for exploration of sea-floor hydrothermal deposits from the Tonga arc.

  • During the Hg2Br2 physical vapor transport process with self-diffusion, it is concluded that for 10-3g0≤ g ≤ 1g0 the thermal buoyancy driven convection is dominant in the vapor phase; at the gravitational level of g = 10-4g0, the transition region from the convection to diffusion occurs; for 10-6g0 ≤ g ≤ 10-5g0, the diffusion mode is predominant. The total molar flux of Hg2Br2 decays exponentially with the decreasing of one tenth of gravitational magnitude. For 10℃ ≤ ΔT ≤ 50℃, the total molar flux increases linearly and directly with the temperature difference between the source and crystal regions.

Effect of Different Stocking Density on Eating Behavior of Hanwoo Steers (Bos taurus coreanae) During Growing Period (거세 한우 육성우 사육밀도가 채식행동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of stocking density on the eating and ruminating behavior of growing Hanwoo steer (Bos taurus coreanae). A total of thirty growing Hanwoo steers were divided into four stocking density groups (G1: 1 head/32 $m^2$, G2: 2 heads/32 $m^2$, G3: 3 heads /32 $m^2$, G4: 4 heads/32 $m^2$) with 3 replicates (12 pens). The results of eating behaviors for 48 hours are summarized as follows: Total intake was higher in 2G, 3G and 4G than in 1G, but not significantly different among thetreatments. Intake of roughage was the highest in 2G (3.32 kg), while 1G (2.85 kg) was the lowest (P<0.05). Eating time of concentrate was highly in the order of 1G > 2G > 3G > 4G (P<0.05). But eating time (concentrate + roughage) and ruminating time were not significantly difference among the treatments. Resting time (standing + lying) was the highest in 4G (P<0.01), and lying time was the highest in 2G. Chewing time (Eating + ruminating) was higher in 3G than in 1G, 2G, and 4G (P<0.05). Number of bolus, number of total chews, ruminating time per bolus and number of bolus per minute were not significantly difference among the treatments. But number of chews per bolus was significantly lower in 1G than those of the other treatments (p<(0.05). Number of urinating was in the order of 1G > 4G > 2G > 3G (P<0.05). However, stocking density had no effect on drinking and defecating. Eating rate and chewing efficiency were the highest in 4G (P<0.01, 0.05), but ruminating efficiency was not significantly difference among the treatments.
