Physical Characterization of Domestic Aggregate (국내 골재의 물리적 특성 분석)

  • Aggregates from 84 cities and counties in Korea were tested for quality to allow analysis of the physical characteristics of aggregates from river, land, and forest environments. River and land aggregates were analyzed for 18 test items, and forest aggregates for 12 test items. They were classified according to watershed and geology, respectively. The observed physical characteristics of the river aggregates by basin were as follows: aggregates from the Geum River basin passed through 2.5, 1.2, 0.6, 0.3, 0.15, and 0.08 mm sieves; clay lumps constituted the Nakdong River basin material; aggregates from the Seomjin River basin passed through 10, 5, and 2.5 mm sieves; those from the Youngsang River basin passed through 1.2, 0.6, 0.3, 0.15, and 0.08 mm sieves; and aggregates from the Han River basin passed through 10, 5, 2.5, 1.2, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.08 mm sieves, Stability; Standard errors were analyzed for the average amount passing through 10, 0.6, and 0.08 mm silver sieves, and performance rate showed different distribution patterns from other physical characteristics. Analysis of variance found that 16 of the 18 items, excluding the absorption rate and the performance rate, had statistically significant differences in their averages by region. Considering land aggregates by basin, those from the Nakdong River basin excluding the Geum River basin had clay lumps, those from the Seomjin River basin had 10 and 5 mm sieve passage, aggregates from the Youngsang River basin had 0.08 mm sieve passage, and those from the Han River basin had 10, 0.6, and 0.08 mm sieve passage. The standard error of the mean of the quantity showed a different distribution pattern from the other physical characteristics. Analysis of variance found a statistically significant difference in the average of all 18 items by region. Analyzing forest aggregates by geology showed distributions of porosity patterns different from those of other physical characteristics in metamorphic rocks (but not igneous rocks), and distributions of wear rate and porosity were different from those of sedimentary rocks. There were statistically significant differences in the average volume mass, water absorption rate, wear rate, and Sc/Rc items by lipid.

The Quality Status of Aggregate for Domestic Ready-mixed Concrete and the Effect of Aggregate Quality in Concrete

  • This research examined the effect of the quality of aggregate on concrete workability and compressive strength through an investigation into regional aggregate used in domestic ready mixed concrete plants. Through the research, it was found that aggregate for ready mixed concrete shows poor quality overall. The main factor of deterioration in the quality of the concrete is the particle size of fine aggregate and fine particle content in coarse aggregate. The quality of aggregate significantly influences concrete's workability, which is defined based on 0.08mm passage related with powder and absorption. In addition, poor aggregate quality leads to increased water content in concrete to secure workability, which is related with a decline in the compressive strength and durability of concrete.

Effect of Maximum Size and Contents Method of Recycled Aggregate Powder on Engineering Properties of the Cement Mortar (순환골재 미분말의 최대입경 및 치환방법이 시멘트 모르터의 공학적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the engineering characteristics of cement mortar according to the replacement method and contents of recycled aggregate powder (RP) by collecting the recycled aggregate powder with the maximum size of below 0.08 mm and 0.15 mm. then, the results of the study can be summarized as follows. The flow of flesh mortar represented a trend in decreasing while the recycled aggregate powder was substituted as it is compared with that of plain. In addition, in case of correlation between tests, it appeared that the correlation between flow and ring flow is big. In the case of the characteristics of hardened mortar, the strength showed more improvements as the RP was substituted to aggregate than the case, which is substituted to aggregate. In addition, it was verified that the results in which the RP was substituted to aggregate by 5% represented similar values to that of the plain according to the passage of age.

Change in the Characteristics of Particle Separation and Particle Size Distribution of Weathered Granite Soil from the Yecheon Area (Eastern South Korea) after Water Washing (물 세척한 예천지역 화강풍화토의 입자분리와 입도분포 변화 특성)

  • In this study, sieve analysis testing was performed on weathered granite soil from Yecheon (eastern South Korea) before and after water washing in accordance with the sieve analysis regulations of KS F 2302. The changes in particle separation and particle size distribution after washing with water were analyzed. Image analysis using an optical microscope revealed that soil particles were separated into smaller particles by water washing. The change in the particle size distribution curve was assessed using five index values. The increase in the fine particle fraction (<0.075 mm) was 13.67%, the increase in the 0.075-0.25 mm fraction was 19.44%, and the mean particle diameter (D50) decreased by 0.663 mm. In addition, the maximum passage width (BM) of the particle size distribution curve increased by 21.08% for the #30 sieve, and the moving area (A) of the particle size distribution curve was 69.28%·mm. These results suggest that washing with water is an effective way to prevent underestimation of the fine particle content in soil.

  • Recently, according to increase use of concrete which is the main material of construction, the natural aggregate of good quality is more and more decreased. Most of all, among the concrete materials, the development of alternation materials of sand is urgently needed. In this study, investigating the production equipment and the sample of crushed sand company and analyzing properties of sand, manufactured mortar by the KS to use crushed sand as the fine aggregate of concrete material. The experiment result is as follows. 1. The density, an absorptivity, and the amount of 0.08mm passage ratio of crushed sand, and the mortar used crushed sand satisfied KS. The mechanical results is similar to sea sand. 2. The crushed sand which used impact crusher instead of cone crusher for 3rd or 4th crusher was similar properties to sea sand, so it is judged that impact crusher has high effect of particle shape improvement of crushed sand.

  • This study examines the performance of the pre-treatment process system to use CGS, a by-product generated in IGCC, as a concrete fine aggregate for construction materials, on the quality of CGS fine aggregate. As a result of the analysis, it is judged that the quality of fine aggregates of CGS can be improved at both density, absorption rate, and 0.08mm body passage amount after the hydroelectric screening process using water as a medium during the pretreatment process. It is believed that it can be used as basic data for national standard certification of CGS fine aggregates in the future.

Characteristics of Fish Utilization of the Nature-like Fishway Installed at the Beakjae Weir (백제보에 설치된 자연형 어도의 어류 이용 특성 분석)

  • In South Korea, various nature-like fishways recently been installed for use by a wide variety of fish species. However, limited attempts have been made to monitor the fish utilization. The present study was conducted to ascertain the frequencies and patterns of utilization of the fishway installed at Beakjae Weir. We collected fish species that use the fishway by installing a fyke net at the exit of the fishway at least once a month from April 2013 to October 2013. Additionally, in order to identify all fish species that can potentially use the fishway, we investigated the fish fauna downstream to Beakjae Weir (mainstream of the Geum River). We found that 10 species belonging to 2 families used the fishway; this accounted for 64% of the total species inhabiting the mainstream. The species that used the fishway most frequently were Microphysogobio jeoni, followed by Squaliobarbus curriculus and Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis. The highest number of fish using the fishway was observed in August, which was positively correlated with the water temperature (Spearman rank correlation, $r_s$=0.743, P=0.035). The sizes of the fish using the fishway varied widely, with the total body length ranging from 39 mm to 550 mm. Analysis of the time-dependent utilization frequency revealed that most fish used the fishway during the night (20:00~08:00). Compared to other fishways installed along the Geum River, the fishway installed at Beakjae Weir was used by fewer species and fish. This may be attributed to the structural inadequacy of the fishway, thereby resulting in a low attraction efficiency. Therefore, measures should be adopted to enhance the fishway attraction and passage efficiency. The results of this study can be used to ensure efficient operation and management of the Beakjae Weir fishway as well as serve as basic data for developing and building nature-like fishways tailored to Korean situations.
