  • Stabilization mechanism of lifted flame in the near field of coflow jets has been investigated experimentally and numerically for methane fuel diluted with nitrogen. Lifted flames were observed only in the near field of coflow jets until blowout occurred in the normal gravity condition. To elucidate the stabilization mechanism for the stationary lifted flames in the near field of coflow jets for the diluted methane having the Schmidt number smaller than unity, the behaviors of the stationary lifted flame in microgravity and unsteady propagation phenomena were investigated numerically at various conditions of jet velocity. It has been founded that the buoyancy plays an important role for flame stabilization of lifted flame in normal gravity and the stabilization mechanism is due to the significant variation of the propagation speed of lifted flame edge compared to the local flow velocity at the edge.

  • The ignition of methane-oxygen mixtures highly diluted with argon was examined in the temperature range of 1516-1937 K behind a reflected shock wave. The ignition delay times were measured by monitoring pressure profiles and the total emissions at 5.0 cm from the end wall. It was found that the experimental result was correlated by the temperature and the concentrations of the gases. To complement the experiment, computer modeling study of methane oxidation was carried out using a GRI 1.2 mechanism.

  • Laboratory and greenhouse experments were conducted to find out the optimum dilution time of methane fermented effluent of hog waste which was high pH (7.85), $NH_4$-N (683ppm), electric conductivity (8.3mmhos/cm) and BOD (about 1,000ppm) and the interval of effluent change which will provide maximun yield of green algae (Scenedesmus accuminatus), duck weed (Lemner minor L.) and Azolla anabaena (Azolla pinnata). The results of this experiment are summerized as follows. 1. The maximum yield were obtained at 5 times diluted effluent ($NH_4$-N : 137ppm) and exchange of 4 day intertval, from 25 times to 50 times dilution ($NH_4$-N : 7-14ppm) and 4 day interval, and 50 times dilution ($NH_4$-N : 14 ppm) and exchange the effluent at 4-8 day interval for green algae, duck weed and azolla growth, respectively. 2. Purification of the effluent was enhenced by growth of the green algae, duck weed and azolla due to decrease of pH, $MH_4$-N and electric conductivity of effluent. The degree of purification was higher in case of azolla growth than duck week growth.

  • Global climatic changes are expected to influence various biogeochemical processes in wetland ecosystems. In particular, coastal mud flat is anticipated to be affected directly by temperature increase as well as indirectly by a sea level rise and changes in precipitation. This study aimed to determine changes in methane production under different temperature and salinity by employing a laboratory-scale manipulation experiment. Soil samples were collected from a mud flat in Dong-Gum Kang-Hwa island in winter and two types of experiments were conducted. In the first experiment soil samples at 0-5 cm, 5-10 cm depth were incubated under same salinity with pore water and diluted salinity to 50 % of natural condition for 20 days and methane production was measured every other days. In the second experiment, soil samples at 5-10 cm depth were incubated in different temperature, $5^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, under same salinity conditions with first experiment for 31 days and methane production was measured. Results of the first experiment revealed that higher amount of methane was produced at 5-10 cm depth, and salinity effect was predominant at the end of the experiment. The second experiment showed that methane production was higher in $15^{\circ}C$ than $5^{\circ}C$. In addition, methane production was higher when sea water diluted to 50 % compared to control. These results suggest that methane production is highly influenced by changes in temperature and salinity in coastal mud flat. And that global climatic change may induce biological feedback by affecting production of another greenhouse gas, namely methane from coastal mud flat.

  • Nonlinear dynamic behavior of diffusive-thermal instability in diluted CH$_4$/O$_2$ diffusion flames is numerically investigated by adopting detailed chemistry and transport. Counterflow diffusion flame is adopted as a model flamelet. Particular attention is focused on the pulsating-instability regime, which arises for Lewis numbers greater than unity, and the instability occurs at high strain rate near extinction condition in this flame configuration. Once a steady flame structure is obtained for a prescribed value of initial strain rate, transient solution of the flame is calculated after a finite amount of strain-rate perturbation is imposed on the steady flame. Transient evolution of the flame depends on the initial strain rate and the amount of perturbed strain rate. Basically, the dynamic behaviors can be classified into two types, namely non-oscillatory decaying solution and diverging solution leading to extinction. The peculiar oscillatory solution, which has been found in the previous study adopting one-step chemistry and constant Lewis numbers, is net observed in this study, which is attributed to both convective flow and preferential diffusion effects.

  • BACKGROUND: Salt accumulation in coastal reclaimed soil can decrease plant growth and productivity, which could lead to considerable variation of methane($CH_4$) emission in a rice paddy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission in a coastal reclaimed soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: The effect of salt concentration on $CH_4$ emission and rice growth characteristics was studied by pot test, which packed by reclaimed paddy soils collected from Galsa, Hadong, Gyeongnam province. Electrical conductivity(EC) of each treatment was controlled by 0.98, 2.25, 5.05 and 9.48 dS/m and $CH_4$ emission was characterized a week interval by closed chamber method during rice cultivation. The $CH_4$ emission rate was significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation, but total $CH_4$ flux in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment was lower than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. It seems because of higher content of water soluble $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in EC 5.50 dS/m treatment than those of EC 9.48 dS/m treatment. Rice growth and grain yield were significantly decreased with increase of salt accumulation. Soil properties, especially EC and pH were negatively correlated with $CH_4$ flux, while rice growth characteristics like plant height and tiller number show significantly positive correlation with $CH_4$ flux. CONCLUSION(S): Conclusively, salt accumulation significantly decreased $CH_4$ flux in a rice paddy, which could be useful information for evaluating $CH_4$ flux in reclaimed area in Korea.

  • The thermal pyrolysis of chlorodifluoromethane (R22) for producting tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) has been studied using the tubular reactor designed by the authors. The reaction temperature over $600{\sim}850^{\circ}C$, residence time over 0.005~0.6 sec, and steam/R22 ratio 3 to 30 were varied through experiments to analyze the effect of these variables on the conversion of R22 and selectivity for TFE. We have provided the guidelines for the optimal operation and design for the pyrolysis reactor. With increasing the dilution ratio, not only the conversion of R22 but also the selectivity for TFE increase. The optimum range of reaction temperature was $700{\sim}750^{\circ}C$ and the residence time 0.07~0.1 sec. In the kinetic study, first order rate equation was fitted well with the experimental data. This indicates that the main reaction step is a $CF_2$ generation from R22 pyrolysis. The range of activation energy for the rate constant was obtained 44.7~48 kcal/mol.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate and improve the pre-treatment facility for foodwaste and sewage sludge mixture treatment. The process of foodwaste pre-treatment consists of storage, classification with crushing, and thickening. The effluent of sewage treatment facility was used as the diluting and washing water. The panicle size of foodwaste after pre-treatment was almost under 2mm, the mixture of foodwastes and sewage sludge showed an advantage to the anaerobic digestion. The amount of gas production increased from 0.8ton/day ($CH_4$ : 0.5ton/day) to 3.5ton/day ($CH_4$ : 2.3ton/day) after the anaerobic digestion of the foodwastes and sewage sludge mixture. The amount of sludge cake increased from 11.2ton/day to 21.2ton/day. Therefore, the proper operation of the foodwaste pre-treatment facility was contributed to the efficient anaerobic digestion of foodwaste and sewage sludge mixture treatment.

  • The effects of $CO_2$-dilution on combustion instability were studied in order to apply biogas in a dual lean premixed gas turbine combustor on a real-scale dual lean premixed burner head which is originally developed for Natural Gas fuel. Combustion instability is reduced by $CO_2$ dilution effect according to the result of dynamic pressure signal and phase-resolved $OH^*$ images. The reason for this is that dilution of $CO_2$ reduces heat release perturbation and increases flame volume due to reduction of the flame speed and expansion of flame surface.

  • Experimental study was conducted to clarify the importance of buoyancy effects in laminar lifted flames which have been well understood by cold jet similarity theory. To evaluate buoyancy effects, lifted flame behaviors were systematically observed in methane and propane lifted flames diluted with He as changing the fuel nozzle diameter from 0.1 to 6 mm. Important physical parameters such as fuel strength, flame stretch and flame curvature, which were derived through simple physical scaling laws, were estimated. It is experimentally proven that buoyancy effects are important in relatively large fuel nozzle diameter and large fuel dilution with He. The results of Chen et al., which displayed the existence of stably lifted flames for 0.5
