  • The present work investigate the effect of sound reinforcement systems on the acoustics of a large dome stadium using a computer simulation. The acoustics of a dome stadium was predicted analyzed by varying room absorption, as well as the configuration of speakers including their directivity, installed height, and numbers. It was found that both D50 and RASTI were improved by increasing room absorption. Larger EDTs were observed according to the increase of room absorption at mid and high frequencies. On the other hand, RT did not show any significant correlation with the changes in room absorption, which might be the effect of a forced linear fitting for non -linear energy decay process. With respect to the speaker configuration, the speech intelligibility of a sound reforcement system installed at higher placed more relied upon their directivity rather than room absorption, Also, lower placing of speakers was found to be effective in decreasing RTs regardless of room absorption.

  • This paper proposes a simple procedure for estimating the acoustical parameter values in an occupied classroom from measurements in the unoccupied classroom. The total sound absorption in an unoccupied classroom can be calculated from measured reverberation times in the room. The expected occupied absorption can be calculated using equation that was obtained in a previous study (Choi, 2016) by fitting a linear regression line to a plot of total occupied absorption versus the corresponding unoccupied total absorption values measured in 12 university classrooms. The ratios of occupied-to-unoccupied sound absorption are used to predict increments in the values of acoustical parameters when occupants are added to the rooms. Occupied values of acoustical parameters can be estimated from unoccupied values and the change in total room absorption due to adding occupants.

  • In this study, the reverberation characteristics of coupled spaces were investigated using a scale model. Two rooms were connected through an acoustically transparent opening known as an aperture. The acoustic characteristics of the coupled room by varying three parameters, the aperture opening size, the absorption ratio between the two rooms and the locations of the secondary room, were measured and analysed. The results indicated that a reverberant secondary room, produced large variations of the acoustics in the main room and an absorptive secondary room was effective to provide systematic control of the acoustics in the main room. The reverberant secondary room should be located at the rear of the stage and the aperture opening ratio over 6.25% produced large variations of the acoustics in the main room. However, the aperture opening ratio over 25% had no effect on variations of the acoustics in the main room. The absorptive secondary room should be located at the rear of the audience areas and the aperture opening ratio over 3.13% produced large variations of the acoustics in the main room.

  • This paper examines the combinations of factors influencing the absorption characteristics of theatre chairs. One-tenth scale model chairs and listeners that closely approximated the absorption characteristics of full scale theatre chairs were used to measure the interactive effects of the test variables on the chairs absorption characteristics. The test variables were the type of chairs, the row spacing, as well as the presence of people and carpet. The variations of absorption increments with varied row spacing tended to be smallest when the chairs were less absorptive, i.e. with less carpet or occupants. The incremental effects of adding occupants or carpet averaged over three row spacings varied over frequency.

  • Sound absorption coefficient for the absorptive panels comprized of a perforated plate. an absorbent material and an air gap was measured and compared with theoretical value. The absorptive panels are composed of three basic combinations (a perforated plate + an air gap + an absorbent material. a perforated plate + an absorbent material, a perforated plate + an absorbent material + an air gap). As a result. it is found that the sound absorption for low frequency range is strongly affected by the resonance produced by perforated plate and air gap. And the sound absorption for high frequency depends on the porosity of perforated plate.

  • The absorption coefficients of the materials used in a 1:50 scale model multipurpose hall were measured based on ISO 354 and related laws. The shape and materials for the scale model were evaluated based on reflective surfaces, variable acoustic elements and sound-absorbing quality (125Hz-1kHz average) of seats. The measured average absorption coefficients of audience seats, audience and orchestra were 0.64, 0.74 and 0,45, respectively, which were simulated with the combination of wood, absorption materials and foam board. Various mounting methods for absorption curtain and banner were considered according to the installation methods. The average absorption coefficient was measured as 0.42, 0.47 and 0.45 in the conditions of Type A mounting, E mounting with 0.9 m backing air cavity, and Type G mounting which is suspended at the ceiling, respectively. It was confirmed that the absorption coefficient was increased at low frequency by backing air gap. The finishing material of stage house was an absorption material covered with thin fabric, which aimed average absorption coefficient of 0.68 by using fiber glass board. Each part of the real materials was compared with those of 1:50 scale model and it was found that the absorption characteristics of both cases were similar.

  • The present study aims to investigates the effects of the physical sound clarity (D50, STI) on the subjective speech intelligibility of the both Korean and Chinese languages which can be caused by increase of the sound absorption in classroom. In order to this, sound measurements were undertaken at a classroom with and without absorption materials. Also, speech intelligibility tests were conducted by Korean and Chinese students using their native languages. As the results, it was found that both sound clarity and speech intelligibility were improved with increasing sound absorption. Also, it was revealed that Chinese speech intelligibility was more improved than Korean with same impose of sound absorption. It was considered by the difference of phonetic characteristics of two languages. Analysing correlation of physical sound clarity and subjective speech intelligibility, it was shown that D50 is highly correlated with Korean (0.696) and Chinese (0.707) respectively. Also, STI was highly correlated with Korean (0.651) and Chinese (0.665). Thus, it can be concluded that D50 and STI have significant correlations with the speech intelligibility.
