  • In this study, hygroelastic behavior of thermosetting epoxy is predicted by molecular dynamics simulations. Since consistent exposures to humid environments lead to macroscopic degradation of polymer composite, computational simulation study of the hygroscopically aged epoxy cell is essential for long-time durability. Therefore, we modeled amorphous epoxy molecular unit cell structures at a crosslinking ratio of 30, 90% and with the moisture weight fraction of 0, 4 wt% respectively. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (EPON862) and triethylenetetramine (TETA) are chosen as resin and curing agent respectively. Incorporating equilibrium and non-equilibrium ensemble simulation with a classical interatomic potential, various hygroelastic properties including diffusion coefficient of water, coefficient of moisture expansion (CME), stress-strain curve and elastic modulus are predicted. To establish the structural property relationship of pure epoxy, free volume and internal non-bond potential energy of epoxy are examined.

  • Transient hygrothermal stresses in an infinitely long hollow cylinder subjected to heating in hygroscopic environments at the surfaces are studied. The equations of hygrothermoelasticity based on the plane strain assumption are formulated by considering the coupling effects between heat and moisture. A closed form solution for the transient hygrothermal stresses is obtained by using decoupling techniques and the method of separation of variables. Numerical results including distributions of temperature and moisture concentration are presented. Effects of transient hygrothermal characteristics are clearly shown in both displacements and stress distributions in the wall of hollow cylinder.

  • In this paper, we studied on the electrical characteristics of insulation material of elastomer epoxy. As the results of test, properties of epoxy represent differently according to elastomer contents. Also, its permittivity, tan ${\delta}$ and BDV(Break-Down Voltage) strength show big difference when those compare before moisture absorption test and after moisture absorption test. From this test we find results that mush elastomer contents can cause insulation properties to degrade.

  • In this paper, we present the properties of water absorption of elastic epoxy for high voltage. The ratio of water absorption shows linearly increase according to ${\sqrt}t$ till 66 hours. And rigid epoxy is 0.053 [%], elastic epoxy at addictives 35 [phr] is 0.309 and it at addictives 70 [phr] is 0.44 [%]. The reason where absorption of elastic epoxy is high is because of micro void. It can be confirmed by SEM analysis. Dieletric constant increased linearly by addictives' concentration and tans is also increased by addictives' concentration.

  • This research was carried out to examine physical and mechanical properties of clay-woodceramics which were carbonized for 3 hours in a special furnace from 3 layers-clay-woodparticleboard made from pallet waste wood, phenol formaldehyde resin(hereafter PF, Non volatile content 52%, resin content 30%) and clay(10%, 20% and 30%). Carbonization temperature was 400℃, 600℃ and 800℃. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the dimensional shrinkage and the lower the carbonization yield ratio. But the higher the clay addition, the lower the dimensional shrinkage and the higher carbonization yield ratio. 2. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the water absorption and the density. The higher the clay content, the higher the density. 3. The higher the carbonization temperature, the higher the bending Modulus of Rupture and bending Modulus of Elasticity.

  • This study was conducted to investigate a feasibility of manufacturing wood fiber thermoplastic composites and to evaluate their mechanical properties. Wood fiber as a potential reinforcing filler was compounded with two thermoplastics (polypropylene and high density polyethylene) in high intensity thermokinetic plastic mixer aided with a wetting agent. It was found that wood fiber thermoplastic composites could be manufactured by injection molding process. The tensile and flexural strength of injection molded specimens were improved greatly with increasing wood fiber concentration. Tensile and flexural modulus increased proportionately with wood fiber concentration. Wood fiber provided reinforcement with thermoplastics in terms of strength and modulus. However, the percent elongation at break and energy to break were reduced with increasing wood fiber loadings. Impact strength also showed similar trend.

  • In this paper, we investigated insulation property of epoxy resin which includes elastomers to improve mechanical property, as varied to additive elastomer contents and to moisture absorption. There are four samples with 5[phr], 10[phr], 15[phr] and 20[phr]. we experimented to acquire insulation property(absorption rate, dissolution rate, apparent rate) and electrical property(perittivity, $tan\delta$, BDV) during respectively the time such as 6[h], 12[h], 18[h], 24[h] for moisture absorption. According to the experimental results, it is appeared that when the additive elastomer contents are increasing or when specimens remain more moisture, absorption rate, dissolution rate, permittivity and $tan\delta$ are slightly increasing but apparent rate and BDV(break-Down Voltage) strength are decreasing in particular, elastomer content [20]phr appeared remarkedly the more increase or decrease than others.

  • In this paper, thermal and mechanical properties of electric epoxy with water aging were discussed. We made elastic epoxy specimen adding a ratio of 0〔phr〕20〔phr〕, 35〔phr〕 and 53〔phr〕 with modifier to existing epoxy. We studied mechanical property of elastic resin after absorption in water from 0 to 484 hours. As a result, diffusion factor of elastic epoxy showed 20-21${\times}$10$^{-4}$ $\textrm{mm}^2$/s and general epoxy showed 9.5${\times}$10$^{-4}$ $\textrm{mm}^2$/s. Elastic property increased linearly according to addiction and decreased according to water absorption. Tensile strength was reduced according to addition. It was affected by water absorption of micro-void of elastic epoxy. Hardness inclined to decrease after increasing according to absorbed time. In water-absorption state, it was experimented a change of heat flow by temperature of elastic epoxy and change of thermal expansion coefficient. DSC (Differential Scanning Calorimetry) and TMA (Thermomechanical Analysis) equipments were used to measure Tg. A temperature ringe of DSC was from -0($^{\circ}C$) to 200($^{\circ}C$). One of TMA was from -0($^{\circ}C$) to 350($^{\circ}C$). In addition, we investigated structural analysis of water absorbed specimen using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope).

  • It has been known that acetylation improves the dimensional stability of wood. Liquid phase acetylation is more popular than gas-phase acetylation for the effectiveness of weight gain of wood. In this study domestic red and Korean pine specimens were liquid phase acetylated and their physical properties, such as density, bending strength, dimensional stability etc., were investigated. Acetylation increased the average weights of red and Korean pine specimens by 10.4% and 9.2%, respectively, and their average oven-dry densities were increased by 6.9% and 4.6%, respectively. Acetylation did not influence on modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and dynamic MOE (DMOE). The average percentage reduction in hygroscopicity (PRH) of red and Korean pine specimens were respectively 20.6% and 13.8%, while the average percentage reduction in water soaking (PRW) were respectively 20.0% and 8.5%. Thus it can be concluded that the liquid acetylation improved the dimensional stability of red pine specimens more than that of Korean pine specimens.
