  • Thermal and gas adsorption properties were measured for Korean earthenware (onggi) as a step to elucidate its role as food preserving container. Thermal conductivity and diffusivity decreased with increase in porosity while heat capacity depended on the raw soil component rather than porosity. Thermal barrier of the earthenware was generally similar to that of glass. The onggi material could sorb or adsorb a limited amount of water vapor, $CO_2$ and ethylene gases (0.0005 g/g, $17{\mu}g/g$, $2.6{\mu}g/g$, respectively). Thermal and gas adsorption properties of onggi seem to provide unique application area for use as food container and packaging.

  • Despite of the various merits of soil pavement, it has not been widely adapted because portland cement was conventionally used as soil stabilizer to improve the mechanical properties such strength parameters. Recently, natural soil stabilizer(NSS) were developed and virtually adopted to several case of soil pavement construction under control of heavy metal pollution compared to cement-used cases. However, the application of natural soil stabilizer is not settled yet, and empirical design have been widely adopted. In this study, therefore, the strength parameter of soil-NSS mixture was estimated by some triaxial compression tests, CU-test. From the tests, the relationship between curing period and strength parameter such as internal friction and effective cohesion was examined. As a result, effective cohesion of dredged clay and granite soil increased as curing time is increased. However, internal friction is almost same result in all soil type used in this study.

  • This research investigated the effect of different onggi containers (Korean earthenware) on the ripening of kochujang (Korean hot pepper paste). The physical characteristics of 'onggi', were evaluated as function of manufacturing variables such as raw material soils (onggi-specific soil, red brown soil, and fine powdered soil) and galzing treatments. The physical properties were then related to the compositional quality changes of the kochujang fermented at $30^{\circ}C$ for 4 months. The porosity of the onggi containers seems to be increased by the content of finer raw soil rather than the chemical component of soil (amount of CaO, MgO, $K_2O$ and $Na_2O$, acting as melting aid in the firing). Natural glaze was measured to contain higher contents of CaO, MgO, $K_2O$ and $Na_2O$ than the other soils, which is desirable property for the fired onggi. The glazed surface showed higher far-infrared radiation emissivity than the non-glazed part. The kochujang fermented in P0-BG (the glazed onggi from 100 % onggi soil) attained higher concentration of reducing sugar, amino nitrogen and nucleotides compared to those in the other onggis. All of these changes of kochujang in P0-BG resulted in significantly better sensory quality than the other treatments.

  • Recently, usage bicycle has been encouraged to reduce energy consumption and $CO_2$. For this purpose, lots of bike road construction are planned. Typical type of pavement used in bikeroad such as asphalt concrete pavement, portland cement concrete pavement, colored pavement, soil pavement. However, these pavement types may need high construction cost comparing the required capacity of bike road. In this study, roller compacted concrete pavement which are economical and durable, are investigated to use as bike road pavement. The optimum compaction level and mix design of roller compacted concrete pavement are suggested by exploring strength test with various mixture ratio and compaction level, Also durability was examined based on freeze-thaw and scaling test. In addition, the cost and amount of carbon emission during in the construction of roller compacted concrete were evaluated and compare with the cost and carbon emission of typical portland cement concrete.

  • The performance of road-pavement system is closely related to the constituent materials and their susceptibility to mechanical as well as physicochemical stresses. However, the influence of physical and chemical effects on the road-pavement system due to pollution intrusion has not been investigated fully. To study this topic, thu.;, the interaction of a road-pavement system with pollution sources and environments are identified and discussed preliminarily in this paper. Pollution intrusion to road-pavement system occurs by three basic mechanisms; 1) direct intrusion into pavement surface, 2) intrusion from the Right of way, and 3) physical-chemical-biological alterations. Pollution intrusion potential is closely related to material type, particle size, and climatological and topographical features. Stability and performance of road-pavement system is also directly affected by pollution intrusion. Based on these features, thus, engineers working in related to the road design, construction, and maintenance should be seriously considered this topic.

  • This study aims to provide basic data for soil packaging differing in accordance with the strength characteristics of mixed soil, using E.S.B. (Eco Soil Binder), an eco-friendly hardening agent, based on the type of soil. The soil used in this study is weathered granite soil readily collected in and around Korea, and is classified into SW, SP and SC according to soil classification systems. The test piece for the unconfined compressive strength test has dimensions of 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height, with the mix ratio of E.S.B. proportional to the weight of mixed soil changed from 5% to 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 30%, where compactness of 90% and 100% were applied according to each condition to analyze the unconfined compressive strength characteristics at material ages of 3, 7, and 28 days. Also, the ratio of soil packaging standard strength and unconfined compressive strength was calculated to determine the optimal E.S.B. mix ratio, whereby the field applicability of the unconfined compressive strength using the estimation equation of ACI209R was evaluated.

  • The basic study was performed on the mechanical analysis of frost and heave using program FROST by CRREL, U.S. army corps of engineers. The characteristics of frost heaving in pavement was analyzed by considering climate, pavement sections and subgrade soil conditions in Korea. Water tables were located at the depth of 0.35m, 2m and 3.35m from subgrade. Inputs were evaluated inevitably from the existing references. As a result frost heave and depth were evaluated with respect time. Maximum frost heave decreased lowering the water table and maximum frost depth was less than 15cm from subgrade. Frost action did not affect seriously on the analysis sections.

  • The purpose of field monitoring system in KHC-Test Road is to provide the performance data for environmental loadings from pavement surface. Among them, water content reflectometer(WCR) are used for measuring the volumetric water content of pavement subgrades. However, WCRs are not well-calibrated based on the local field conditions. A need therefore exists for improving equations for predicting water content using the proper field and laboratory calibrations. Based on the study performed, calibrations based on various soil characteristics and density conditions are well fitted to the data from fields. So, it is recommended to use the suggested general calibration of WCR to the compacted subgrade soils in test road for predicting the volumetric water content.

  • This article aims to find method to mix a harmless hardening agent and soil generated during construction to make paving materials. The main purpose of this research is to get rid of the harmfulness(Chromium (VI), etc.) of cement which has been generally and frequently used as a hardening agent and strengthen it so that it can be used for the general foundation solidification and stabilization of civil engineering/construction structures such as dredging soil treatment, marine structure foundation treatment, surface soil stabilization, and river bank erosion prevention. NSS(Natural Stabilizer Soil) used for this study takes as its chief ingredient the mixture of lime and staple fibers extracted from natural fibers. It increases the shearing strength of soil that it improves the support and durability of the foundation and prevents flooding and frost as well. The pH measured to know its eco-friendliness was 6.67~7.15, and according to the migration testing, only Pb and CN were lower than the standards, so it can be said that NSS has almost no harmful components in it. According to the result of uniaxial strength testing, when the mixture ratio of weathered soil to NSS was 6%, about 1,850kpa strength was expressed. And according to the result of CBR. testing to figure out its appropriateness as a paving material, the CBR of the foundation was 4%~6%. But when the mixture ratio of NSS is over 6%, the water immersion CBR. is over 100%; thus, it is expected that it will show great utility as a paving material.
