  • The purpose of this study was to examine the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP strips. A total of 12 rectangular beams were tested. Test variables in this study were the shapes, bonded length and the number of longitudinal layers of CFRP strips. From the experimental study, flexural capacity of the beams strengthened with CFRP strips significantly increased compared to the reinforced concrete beam without a CFRP strip. Maximum increase of ultimate strength was found about 120% more than the control beam. In this test, most of the strengthened beams failed suddenly due to the debonding of CFRP strips. It is also observed that the debonding of the strip was initiated in the flexural zone of the beam and propagated rapidly to the end of the beam. The ultimate tensile strains of CFRP strips in this test were occurred at the level of 36% of rupture tensile strength of the CFRP strip, and an analytical approach to compute the flexural strength of reinforced beams strengthened with CFRP strips based on the effective stresses was conducted.

  • The structural behaviour of concrete beam was examined by the three points bending test after the completion of the electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), rather than bond strength mostly measured in previous studies. It was found that the flexural rigidity of concrete was lowered by the ECE, but the strength was enhanced in terms of the maximum load. The flexural rigidity, in the linear elastic range, was reduced by the loss of effective cross-section area. In fact, the inertia moment was substantially subjected to 70 % loss of the cross-section by the tensile strain at the condition of the failure. However, a lower rate of the inertia moment reduction was achieved by the ECE, implying the higher resistance to the cracking, but the higher risk of deformation.

  • The current analytical techniques for R/C elements under severe dynamic repeated loads, like earth¬quake or impact, have two major problems; one is that the effects of strain rate are not considered and the other one is the current analytical model was developed based on flexural behavior only. This study develops computer software that can idealize the flexural and shear behavior of R/C elements using several parameters and also can consider the effects of strain rate. The analytical results using the developed technique were compared with serveral experimental results and they were generally satisfied.

  • An algorithm is proposed for estimating dynamic displacements of a bridge by using FBG sensors and by superposing some measurable low modes. Modal displacements are obtained from the beam theory and the generalized coordinates are deduced from the strains measured by FBG sensors. By considering flexural and torsional modes occurred in bridges only as flexural modes of a simply supported beam by separating a bridge into multiple girders or parts, the proposed algorithm can be applied to various types of bridges. Guidelines are provided theoretically for determining the number of modes and the number of strain gages to be used. The proposed algorithm has been examined through simulation studies on various types of bridges, laboratory experiments on a model bridge, and field tests on a simple span PC Box girder bridge. Through the simulation study, the effects of the error in the vibration modes and measurement noise on estimating the dynamic displacements are analyzed.

  • A strain rate-dependent element model was used to study the loading rate-sensitivity of R/C beams and columns with different design factors. Conclusions were derived regarding the differences between the element axial/flexural performance under impulsive and quasi-static loads. Practical design formalas for predicting the loading rate-dependent axial and flexural strengths of R/C elements were also suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was the estimation and formulation of orthotropic flexural rigidities considering the deformed shape for a plate stiffened with rectangular ribs. Analytical results of methods modifying the flexural rigidity of the x-direction, the y-direction or both directions were compared at the center, the x-directional quarter point and the y-directional quarter point of stiffened plates loaded at the center. The composite method modifying the flexural rigidity of both directions improves the accuracy compared with the other methods. Moreover, the ratio of modified coefficients for each directional rigidity can be expressed as a function corresponding to each dimension of stiffened plates. The application of modified coefficient functions to various types of stiffened plates with different boundary conditions, aspect ratios and rib arrangement shows that the increment of the error ratio is small compared with examples of this study and the application of proposed functions shows more accurate results than previous methods modifying the flexural rigidity. Therefore, by using the modified coefficient functions proposed in this study, the orthotropic plate analysis of plates stiffened with rectangular ribs can easily achieve more accurate displacement results.

  • This paper concentrates on the analysis of deflection of the reinforced concrete flexural members under monotonic loading. Concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material. The concept of equivalent strain and crack strain are used to establish independent stress-strain relationships in the directions of orthotropy. Steel is modeled as an elstoplastic material, and von Mises failure criterion is applied. The finite element computer program for the nonlinear analysis of the deflection of RC flexural members under monotonic loading is developed. The accuracy and reliability of the numerical procedure is demonstrated by the FEM analysis and experiments of the under reinforced concrete beams over the entire loading range up to failure.

  • The present study prepared 13 mixes to examine fundamental mixture proportions of corrosion inhibitor repair mortars. The mortar mixes were classified into three groups according to the selected test variables which are the substitution level of polymer for Group 1, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) and fly ash (FA) for Group 2, and corrosion inhibitor for Group 3. Based on the test results, the optimum substitution levels of GGBS and FA could be recommended as 10% and 20%, respectively, though 1-day strength of mortar significantly decreased with their substitution. Furthermore, the appropriate substitution level of corrosion inhibitor was considered to be less than 1.5%. The flexural strength of mortar tested was higher than the predictions obtained from ACI 318-11 equation. The shrinkage strain of mortar was also conservative after an age of around 10 days compared with the predictions of ACI 209.

  • In strengthening structure, the external post-tensioning method which secure clearness in the structure analysis process is adopted to bridges as well as architecture structure. In this study, to investigate the behavior of composite beam in the process of post-tensioning, the amount of prestress force loss, the amount of prestressed compression stress at the lower flange and the behavior of lower flange connected with anchorage are analyzed by comparing the results of finite element analysis with the measured results of installed strain gauges. After finishing the post-tensioning, the strengthening effect of external post-tensioning method is analyzed by static loading test. It is also investigated that the strengthening effect of shear section in the harped external post-tensioning specimens.
